Merged Voicemails after IOS 17 Update

My wife and I share an Apple ID but have different cell phone numbers. We both have iPhone 14 Pro Max.

When I updated to iOS 17, yesterday, I lost all ability to make changes on the Apple ID (the picture got grayed out in Settings). Can't even enter it.

When she upgraded to iOS 17, today, our voice mail gots merged. When someone leaves a VM on her phone, it shows up on mine. Same as leaving a VM on mine, it shows up in hers. When I delete a VM on my phone, it gets deleted on hers and vice-versa.

How do we need to change to get back to separate voice mails? Please help.

The issues were two fold and resolved in a Genius Bar session.

  1. The grayed out Apple ID was caused by me turning on Content & Privacy Restrictions, Not Allowing Passcode Changes and Account Changes, and putting in a different 4-Digit Passcode. Once, I turned it off, the Apple ID under Settings, stopped being grayed out and it was back to normal. BTW, the reason I put I put in this 4-digit passcode is because of this report from WSJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCfb9Wizq9Q;
  2. The only way out of the merge voice mail (calls, photos, etc.) is to create a different Apple ID and do Family Sharing.

Thanks for your help!

This is an absolutely awful function. I have a work and a personal phone tied to the same Apple ID and have always been able to keep them separate until iOS 17. Now I have to create a new Apple ID for my work because I can't restrict calls, voicemails and contacts from showing up on my personal phone.

Yes. Same here. I have already done the separation of phones. It sucks. I liked having texts coming through on both phones (iMessage) and being able to answer either of near each other. No longer can do that.

Apple preaches 1 ID for everything and then they do this. SMH

I use the same Apple ID for my work device as I do my personal device. Phone numbers are different. I am now getting mixed voicemails due to the iOS 17 update. There is no need for me to have different Apple IDs for my work device. This is a great feature and should be able to be toggled off or routed similarly to that of iMessage abilities. As a developer, this would be the appropriate approach to this type of function.

IMHO - this does seem to be Apple OS related issue as my two devices both share voicemails to one another as they each get them, and the two phones are on two different carriers, AT&T for work and T-Mobile for personal.

As far as the issue, luckily for me, it is just me sharing a work phone and a personal with myself. So no harm in others hearing my voicemails, but it is very concerning.

The live voicemail fix did actually appear to work for about 2 minutes and after I conducted several tests, but than unfortunately reappeared just 10 minutes later even though LIVE voicemails remained turned off on both devices.

Looking forward to a solution.

Were having a similar problem but even weirder - When someone leaves a VM on her phone, it shows up on mine. and we have different carriers - she's on version and I'm on AT&T and we have different apple ID's - we don't know what the heck is going on..........

Are you absolutely certain you have different Apple ID's? On each iPhone open Settings > Tap Your Name at the top, Apple ID, iCloud, etc and underneath the name will be the Apple ID email, which each phone is under. I would be very surprised if both phones weren't under the same email ID. The carrier has nothing to do with this.

Again I don’t understand why some people here feel they know other people’s lives better than themselves? Your solution does not work for other people so please stop repeating yourself.

No one is talking about anyones lives. APPLE says DO NOT SHARE APPLE IDs, OR BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN. If you don’t want to play by Apple’s design decisions then you you will live with the consequences.

Agree completely...I have 2 separate iphones (1 verizon and 1 AT&T). I am having the same issue. I too have used the same Apple ID for both devices for 7+ years with never issues. My issue is if I miss a call, the call shows up on both iphones missed call logs and the voicemail that is left shows on both devices as well. We have tried turning off icloud sync for phone, contacts off as well as call forwarding. So frustrating!!

This worked for us, but I see so many people saying it is not working. We have Spectrum Mobile, maybe some carriers are different? Tested 3 calls and my wife is no longer getting my voicemails. Thank you.

As has been. noted, it may work for a short time. But, it will probably stop working. The only 100% effective, lasting solution is to stop sharing an Apple ID.

Super late to the party here, but I would like to make a couple of comments. First, who told Apple that they own the right to my calls, messages and voicemails made on my phone that I purchased, on a carrier that I am paying for and that they don’t own either. Way out of line. Second, Apple just recently started this practice with IOS 16, there were no issues before that. I had Simeón at Apple fix this issue for me before. Now I have updated again and got screwed again. I might be forced to switch to Android.

Apple doesn't read here in this user-to-user forum for feedback or suggestions. You can, however, let them know your thoughts here:

Product Feedback - Apple

Apple has been very clear, for years, that sharing an Apple ID is going to cause problems as they are designed for one person only. You are absolutely allowed to ignore that advice but then complaining about the consequences seems a bit disingenuous. Also, Apple has never claimed the right to your calls, messages or voicemails. They have claimed (and you agreed to) the right to determine how the software on their devices works. If iPhones don't meet your needs, you should absolutely by an Android.

Both ATT and Verizon customers (I'm verizon) have this problem. Obviously it's an Apple ios thing. I'm a long time apple user who even ran an apple server at one time. I can tell you that the cloud and how apple implements it is very frustrating. Not only this latest voicemail issue but duplicate contacts and all sorts of other bugs that seem to never get resolved. Steve Jobs would have never, ever let these user difficulties go on and on and on...
