The iPhone autocorrect keeps adding extra letters when I text

The auto correct is very frustrating. When I type some thing it adds letters to it which I assume I’m supposed to automatically insert but it adds additional letters which I then have to go back and delete. I don’t like my text second-guessing what I’m trying to write.

Same issues amongst many more on iOS 17.

The keyboard is hardly useable now with smart punctuation and autocorrect on. Especially when using swipe to text.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief,  was so proud to announce iOS 17 will “learn” words now. I’ve sent 13 replies using his example of the F-word, to test. Still suggests ducking, ticking, filling, filing, flicking, sucking, etc. It still DUCKING suggests DUCKING. I still can’t swipe “already” either, as an example.

And, trying to tap the screen between two words to make a word plural or to add a word to the end of an open paragraph… highlights entire words instead, suggests all wrong words, and (if not caught) then erases it when you start typing! Only way out is to click an empty area elsewhere then drag the cursor back.

Also, it still changes previously typed and verified correct words 2-3 words BEHIND where you’re now typing. To something completely confusing. A blue underscore is not helpful in this scenario, as you’ve left the scene!

The new predictive text is messed up as well. It appends words where you don’t ask it too.

Emails, notes, messages, etc. Does it everywhere. It’s painful to use unless we disable features or use 3rd party keyboards like gboard or swiftkey. Can’t use text replacement, it changes to different words each time; no consistency. All these Work-Arounds break other functionalities like autofill anyhow.

Last straw for me is when it takes 1.2hrs fixing this post from errors it repeatedly makes.

I am at wits end.

Yes I found this post because I have all those issues after the new update it seemed to get even worse. Unusable. I felt I was developing some brain disorder with these random extra letters, inability to delete or correct auto correct. I currently have several random letters appear ahead of the curser (blinking thing) and when pressing space to get to the next word it auto corrects it to something totally insane... I don't even know what I had been trying to write😂 I have stopped writing messages on my phone all together because it's just embarrassing what I end up sending to people at this point...

I hate the new updates to predictive text. I have autocorrect off but predictive text on. Not only has it "lost" all of the training from previous versions, but it autocorrects things I don't want changed. For example, when I type "you" it autocorrects to "Youngstown," which is something I *never* type. When I left a text to remind myself to contact Apple, it autocorrected Apple to Appleton. Again, Appleton is not a place I ever text about. I have checked and double-checked that my autocorrect is off, but it is like it ignores it. Also, I no longer have to actively choose the predictive text from the bar, which exacerbates this issue.

It makes up words that are not even in any language, but they phonetically sound the same as what you need it to type out. It just makes up words. Out of thin air. Hass for has. Lieff for life. Why?

Both "Hass" and "Lieff" are real words. They are names.

It seems to need more work! It’s like ‘autocorrect’ after a long night! If you’re not watching what you’re typing & what predictive text offers, which I’m not used to watching, just hitting the space bar inserts their predictive text. More often than not, I have to go back & change it. Sometimes it displays a bubble with what you typed to make it easier to change it back, but not always & I don’t know why it doesn’t display that consistently?

Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to do the predictive text, but it’s more of a problem for me than it helps, so I’m just going to turn it off for now! Hopefully, Apple will announce enhancements in a future update, so I know to try it again.

The IOS upgrade with AI autocorrect is so bad it can not be used. I have disabled it today as the AI changes sentences into meaningless jumbo with incorrect spelling and grammar. It often allows the sentence which I wrote and then on the final word I type it goes back and changes the whole word structure. It is particularly problematic when I go back to try to correct a spelling error in one word, then it changes the word to something meaningless. I have used it for a month it is NOT improving, so I have disengaged AI. I use Grammarly on the MacBook and it is excellent so AI can work, just not the Apple version. Has anyone found that it actually works, if so how did you do it?
