Blink security app - notification sound changed since IOS 17 update

I just updated my iPhone 13 to IOS 17. Since the update the Blink security app notification sound changed and now is very quiet. I went to Settings/Notifications/Blink and the only option is Sounds with an on/off button - no way to change sound or increase volume.

I notified Blink and their Customer Support said to contact Apple. I told them this is not my singular problem but is a Blink problem. No go, they keep pointing at Apple.

Looks like we have a circular firing squad...

Any help anyone could offer would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

My specific problem has been that since upgrading to IOS 17, ALL of my app notification sounds changed to a short, low volume "blip" sound, not just Blink. Today, after trying to change a few settings, all my notification sounds returned, and Blink now sounds like a more substantial "beh-roop" sound (kinda like a thick liquid drop). Not exactly sure what specifically fixed the problem, but here's what I did in case you wanted to try.

I double checked all the usual suspect Notifications and Sounds & Haptics settings to make sure they were set correctly and found nothing wrong. Then in Sounds & Haptics, I changed the ring tones for Text Tone and New Mail, and then set them back to default in order to test the ringtones and hopefully reset them. Then I went into Notifications and into the various individual apps whose notification sounds were not working correctly and changed their tones and then set them all back to default. I think the last app I changed was the Mail (Safari) app's sound under Notification, Customize Notifications, selected my mail provider's account name under Accounts, and noticed my Alerts setting was toggled off and I toggled that back on. Within a few minutes I received both an email and Blink notification that sounded normal. Again, I'm not sure what specifically fixed the problem, but in my case, it seems it may have been resetting the apps whose notifications were sounding distorted and turning on the Mail app's Alert on-off toggle that had been turned off during the IOS 17 install.

Your mileage may vary.... Good luck.

Here is what I know: With iOS 17.2, Apple added the ability to change the default sound for push notifications. Since the Blink app used the default sound, we were able to change it back to "Tritone". A few days later (one week ago) the Blink app was updated to v27.0. In this update, the Blink app stopped using the default sound for camera notifications and instead used its own sound "Chord" and there is no way to change it. However, at the same time, the app maintains the default sound for the rest of its notifications (for example, automatic arming and disarming of cameras).

The update only allows one to change the default notification sound. We really need to be able to set a sound for each and every different app.

That is something the app developers can already do. Blink just chooses not to. I use a Ring camera and the Ring app has other notification sound options. I have an app that reminds me to get up and exercise every so often. It has a notification that is completely different from anything Apple offers. I use a weather app that, in addition to having its own rather scary tone, makes excellent use of critical notifications. Apple has already provided the developers with the tools. Apple can't make them use those tools.

Please try setting Siri to announce your Blink notifications..

To have Siri announce notifications

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Under "‌Siri‌," select Announce Notifications.
  4. Toggle the switch next to Announce Notifications to the green ON position.
  5. To get ‌Siri‌ to announce all notifications from a specific app, simply select the app in question in the list under "Announce Notifications From" and toggle on its Announce Notifications switch.

Or close to that. I did manage to get it going. I like this even better than the old tone.

Found this in a supporting article:

Numerous users have voiced their concern that the Blink Security app’s notification

sound has become quite muffled and faint on their iPhones right after

installing the latest iOS 17 update. As a result of this, they end up missing

some crucial important alerts on a regular basis.

Truth be told, Apple is right this time around

as it’s the sole reasonability of the app developer to rectify an issue that is

bugging their app. If the issue had been due to the latest iOS 17 update, then

it would have affected other third-party apps as well.

However, all the other apps are working well

and good without any issues with regard to their notification tones. So the

ball is in the Blinks’ court which it refuses to acknowledge. It has now been

close to 3 months but Blink is still simply targeting the Cupertino giant

instead of taking matters into their own hands and resolving the issue. This

is seriously not acceptable from such a reputed company that too which deals in

such an important domain. Unfortunately, though, Blink is still ****-bent and

is refusing to be flexible in accepting the fact that the issue is from their

end and thanks to this, the users are turning out to be the ultimate sufferers.

Keep bugging the Blink developers!

I have tried over a DOZEN times to change sounds and haptics for my Blink Security camera- it USED to work- according to ALL BLINK INSTRUCTIONS it SHOULD work- now this is on YOU APPLE!!!!!

Apple can't fix the Blink app. It sounds as if you may need to update your app. Blink added the ability to change the notification tone fairly recently.

This is exactly my experience too.

I believe this is what occured, pple may or may not have told app developers that if you do not

update your apps to allow selection of a tone for your apps, then we are

going to defer to the default tone to be used which changed from the

Tri tone alert in IOS 16 to the Rebound alert in IOS 17 which is not

audible using the phones highest volume settings.

Google in turn either didn't pay attention to the changes coming using the IOS

17 upgrade or worse decided it's not worth the investment to update the

app to allow there to be an option to change the tone to something else

other than Apple's default "Rebound" tone.

Probably the same is true with Blink...don't know since I haven't spoken with them and I have a different system, but I am suffering from the same typical corporate issues of "...not my fault" when it really is their fault.

The amazing thing is we are talking about this affecting security of your property and to date no one is taking is seriously. Very Frustrating.

Ok Folks… The default tone after the iOS 17 update set by Apple that we now hear for the Blink App is called “Rebound”… This tone is not set by Blink as it is also the default tone for other App Notifications like “My Radar” and others… So as Katana-San has correctly suggested I will contact Product Feedback - Apple with my findings and request a different default tone that we can hear… I will report back to this Forum afterwards…

As I previously write : “It’s not only a third party app issue, Apple pointing at cameras app but Apple Weather app is not better.

Bad weather alerts, Apple Weather app, are weak either. Same poor, weak sound.”

If Blink, or other cameras apps, and Apple Weather app (critical alerts) trigger the same poor and weak sound, it’s not a blink app developer problem, or any other camera app developper problem.

All apps, Apple or third party apps, trigger an inaudible “alert sound” called Rebound. So, I would be happy if Apple could admit and explain this same behaviour.

I had four calls with Apple support and still they pretend : it’s a third party app issue.

My opinion : it’s obviously not true.

Maybe, I’m wrong. If not, it’s an iOS 17 issue. Apple must fix it, no body else.
