Compass issues in watchOS 10

Since upgrading my Ultra (first gen) to watchOS 10, the Compass app has been non-functional. It cannot find the lat/long. I cannot save waypoints. It has no idea where it is.

I've tried repairing the Watch twice and once I set the device up as a new Watch. Still no joy.

Is anyone else having troubles with Compass on watchOS 10 on an Ultra?

Had the same issue. Solved by reset the location and privacy on iPhone. Go to settings -> general -> transfer or reset iPhone -> reset -> reset location & privacy. After reset, reopen the compass app on watch and grant location permission.

I tried this and worked on my Ultra 2. No reason why it shouldn't on non ultra. I tested with 3rd party compass apps and all could save waypoints and showed lat+long. So it is a watchOS 10 problem, software problem, not hardware. First check is see if lat and long are showing on watch, if not, then its an issue. Do this. Uninstall compass app from iphone. reboot iphone. You will notice compass on watch disappears when you do this. When iphone is on again, reinstall compass app. reboot iphone. when iphone is on again, go to settings>general>transfer or reset iphone>reset>reset location & privacy>ok>exit settings. reboot iphone. when all this is done. force on/off watch. when watch is on again, you will see the compass app. Go in and see if lat and long are showing, it both are there. Problem is solved. You should now be able to add waypoint and use backtrace(on the ultra).

I'll ask the obvious question - could this be a GPS failure or a wider permission for access to Location data from the GPS? Do other functions which use GPS position still work? (Maps, does it appear correctly on Find My, etc...)

Note: It looks like the permissions for access to Location data might be set on your iPhone and mirrored automatically to the watch. Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > (then check any plausible looking settings)

It's software -- an embarrassment for Apple. Major bugs like this used to be feature of the annual updates, until the last few years in which Apple seems to have gotten it together.

Based on recent comments in the thread I agree a bug is most likely. However, failure of one sub-feature in a specific app is a minor nuisance rather than a major bug. Major bugs make the product completely unusable, or cause risk to life.

For the avoidance of doubt, I will post that link again

Went to Genius Bar in Brighton tech guy ran a test on the watch compass had a tick but some other setting had a cross so he said this was probably the problem the cost to repair is £229 as my watch is out of warranty don’t really use the compass on watch and it works fine on my iPhone so will either upgrade it to series 9 or just live with it

Thanks for the update. After reading your message I updated to 10.0.1 also, same results.

The main thing I'm looking for is an update to the Compass app itself. There is no reason besides the actual app if this isn't a hardware problem or an app problem for Apple's own apps or even third party apps using location successfully.

The compass app on apple's app store doesn't display any version or version history. It's impossible to see at which usual rate it receives updates.
