After iOS 17 update we are receiving each other’s voicemails on our iPhone

Why are my husband and I receiving each other’s voicemails?

After the last update 17 on our iPhone 14 we have been receiving each other’s voicemails. Call forwarding is off and live voicemail is off on both phones.

There's one and only one solution to this. Stop sharing an Apple ID. Apple specifically says two people should have their own unique Apple ID. Then you can use family sharing to share content, such as photos, storage, etc.

If you don't want to separate your Apple ID's, your call logs and messages will be shared between the two of you as Apple sees the two phones as one phone.

Same, we have shared an Apple ID for 14 years and never had ay issues until the 17 IOS update. Come On Apple support your customers and fix this issue, I am at the point of switching to an Android and I have always been an Iphone user but this is crazy and you are doing nothing to fix it.

Apple doesn't read here in this user-to-user forum for feedback or suggestions. You can certainly let them know your thoughts here:

Apple has been quite clear about their positiion on this matter.

Why are you unwilling to stop sharing an Apple ID? Doing so would certainly be easier than switching to an Android phone (which would also mean you wouldn't be sharing an Apple ID).

It is mind boggling as each phone has a unique identity established by its respective phone number. There is no reason that any communication meant for one phone number should be sent to a different phone number.

This is different than all previous IOS versions. This is a conscious choice by Apple.

Apple added voicemail sharing to everything else that was already shared, and to everything else that was already intermixed, as everything is shared within the context of an Apple ID.

Having access to all voicemail is exactly what is appropriate too, when an Apple ID is configured per person.

Apple recommends not sharing an Apple ID, because, well, stuff is shared:

Precisely - it is a conscious choice by Apple, as this is how AppleIDs work.

Apple has documented for years that devices that are logged into the same AppleID will be seen as "one" and to not share AppleIDs.

If you don't want this sharing to occur, log out of your AppleID on your work device.

We’re having the same problem! For years we’ve shared our AppleID so we could sync our calendars and contacts, but sharing voicemail is NOT what either of us wants. I thought Apple was into privacy. This is annoying and they need to fix it!

Apple is "into privacy", so much so that they strongly recommend you not share an Apple ID.

So many people respond that the solution is simple, “stop sharing IDs”

Because that is the one and only answer that will work 100% of the time.

don’t ignore the problem or frustration that this creates even if the solution is simple

No one is ignoring anything. This is a technical support forum. There's nothing anyone can do here to ameliorate your frustration. I guess people could be sure to say "Oh, I'm so sorry that you're unhappy" with every post but, people volunteer their time here. That time may be limited and people may have different styles of responding. Insisting that people respond in a specific way tends to fail.

If you want Apple to know your thoughts, you can do so here:

Apple has discouraged sharing recently, many of us were sharing upon inception of Apple products and it was common and accepted to have one family ID.

I understand the evolution, you don’t appreciate the history or legacy.

this is how it is now, this isn’t how it was.

Not Recently; starting about 10 years ago, when Family Sharing was first introduced in 2014. All Apple guidance since then has said don’t share an Apple ID. Since then they have gradually added features that assumed that people followed this guidance.

Creating your own AppleID is simple. Why share one? What is the advantage of sharing an appleid? You know how to fix this and it is easy

It's not creating a new Apple ID that is the challenging thing. It's disentangling the data so that both people end up with the parts of the previously shared data that they need/want. While it's certainly well within the ability of most iPhone users to do, it takes time. And for some people, probably a number of questions to the forum to make sure they're doing it right.

All I can say is that you, KiltedTim, and MrHoffman have more patience than I have. It is a well established fact that Apple never endorsed the sharing of an ID - their position has been consistent since I bought my first iPhone many many years ago, each user should have their own ID, full stop.

Anyone complaining about that here is wasting their time; as you and I know this is a User to User Forum only but regardless, even if Apple was here the answer would be the same, do not share an Apple ID.
