After iOS 17 update we are receiving each other’s voicemails on our iPhone

Why are my husband and I receiving each other’s voicemails?

After the last update 17 on our iPhone 14 we have been receiving each other’s voicemails. Call forwarding is off and live voicemail is off on both phones.

There's one and only one solution to this. Stop sharing an Apple ID. Apple specifically says two people should have their own unique Apple ID. Then you can use family sharing to share content, such as photos, storage, etc.

If you don't want to separate your Apple ID's, your call logs and messages will be shared between the two of you as Apple sees the two phones as one phone.

Considering my husband is now getting my voicemails from my doctors off with medical information creating a HIPAA violation, Apple needs to rethink this

No, it's not a HIPPA violation. Its by your doing, when you share the same Apple ID with someone else. Throughout this thread are links explaining why Apple wants each user to have their own Apple ID, how to set up Family Sharing to share things like Apps, Storage, etc.

Of course, you can tell Apple What you think they should rethink, by using this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

My husband and I have shared an apple id for many many years and never had an issue until this update. I tried a few things I google but nothing is working. At this point, it is difficult and challenging for one of us to create a new apple id. Just saying.

Sunk costs are a thing, too. And these erroneously-shared configuration such as this one only get more entangled the longer it goes on. As mentioned earlier, here are some previous discussions with tips about disentangling an erroneously-shared Apple ID:

IOS 17 Apple IDs are not meant to be shared, Apple has no intention or desire of segragating voicemail’s by phone number, and will distribute to anyone associated on the Apple ID.

This is mind boggling, but their intent.

Not mind boggling at all; logging in with your AppleID creates one unified environment, which is why you can make or take calls from your iPad or Mac as well.

We’re having the same problem! For years we’ve shared our AppleID so we could sync our calendars and contacts, but sharing voicemail is NOT what either of us wants. I thought Apple was into privacy. This is annoying and they need to fix it!

Indeed, Apple is most definitely into privacy, which is why for years they have told people that sharing an Apple ID is the exact opposite of private. If you want privacy, you need to stop sharing the same Apple ID with someone. It is you who is doing the exact opposite of privacy.

Nothing is going to change with the next update. Apple is very firm about not sharing an Apple ID, and if anything there will be more negative consequences to sharing in the future, in addition to the current ones of many functions not working the way they would be expected to work. that’s in addition to the security vulnerabilities, such as not being able to hide anything from any of the other user(s) of the Apple ID (gift lists, perhaps? photos, texts, emails, web sites visited…)

And shared Apple IDs are just LOVED by divorce lawyers.

LISTEN TO YOUR CLIENTS APPLE!!!

Apple isn't here. This is a user to user only forum. Apple has been advising users to NOT share an Apple ID for more than a decade. Whether you choose to listen or not, is up to you, but don't count on Apple listening to you on this subject.

Wonder how many would have stayed with IOS16 if they knew the changes being made in this area with 17. I think I would have stayed as I have not seen enough “good” stuff in 17 to offset this problem.
I never saw any announcements from Apple about this change.

Access to your own data and sharing your own settings across all of your own devices is a useful and desirable behavior. This ubiquitous access has long been a longstanding and fundamental part of iCloud, and of Apple ID security and privacy more generally. And with per-person Apple IDs, this all just works.

Mail rules, focus settings, message conversations, photos, universal access, calendars and contacts, all sorts of stuff is available to yourself across your devices and Macs. If it’s not currently shared (and makes sense to share it across your own Apple ID), I’d expect to find it shared in some future version, too.

Sharing an Apple ID gets all of this conflated.

I do wish there was an easier way to disentangle a shared Apple ID, though.
