Face ID stopped working on my iPhone after iOS 17 update

I had this problem. After trying everything else I cleaned the camera lenses and that fixed the it.

try cleaning the front camera, it worked for me

I did read and tried to set the screen brightness as bright as it would go and for now its working again. Just and FYI not sure how long this will work though.

I tried everything when my Face ID stopped working and nothing worked until I noticed front lens had a finger mark on it, gladly that’s all it was so hopefully that can help some people.

That could very well be, but I can't say that the dirt was obvious. One can easily get some oil from fingers on the lens. The software should, of course, be able to correct for that, so I think they did screw up big, but my "fix" got me back to normal for multiple hours now, and I will take care for now not to touch the lens, and if I do wipe it.

J’ai le même problème. Nettoyer la lentille marche un temps mais on ne peut quand même pas configurer l’ajout de lunettes.

il y a clairement un problème et ce n’est pas matériel. C’est d’autant plus vrai si certains repassent en IOS16 t que ça fonctionne.

je suis en 17.2 c’est toujours pareil.

Le téléphone a fonctionné toute la journée sauf ce soir.

c’est totalement aléatoire mais on est sûr d’une chose : ce n’est pas matériel.

il semble que lorsque je lève la coque c’est mieux. Peut être faudrait il également enlever le verre trempé. Ce qui voudrait dire que la sensibilité de détection a simplement diminuée depuis iOS 17.

Sorry to hear this. From reading other posts, restoring will not solve this for more than a few hours. Please let Apple know about this as every single person counts and the more who feedback the sooner they will admit/address it. Feedback - iPhone - Apple

This has now happened to me twice on the back of software updates. Issue occurred for me too (on my 14 pro max) . Reading this thread I did the ‘reset iPhone’ suggestion and it has solved the issue, BUT I’ve rolled back to 16.x software. It’s pushing to update to 17.2 software but I’m reluctant, as clearly there’s an issue with this update. I also read that users had same issue on their older phones. I had a 13 pro max and the same issue occurred with face ID failing after the 16.2 update. In addition I couldn’t reset Face ID as the true depth camera in face ID set up would not acknowledge my face! In the end I upgraded to 14 pro max. Disappointing to see this happening again

its really important that you do as Apple do not look at this page.

Doesn’t fix it. Backing up and doing full reset doesn’t either. Tech support said “there’s a lot of technology in the caverns for Face ID. You’ll need to bring it in for repair”. He then followed that with it’s not worth fixing a 13 Pro Max. Well then. Trade me out at a fair price Apple.

‼️‼️‼️‼️I tried to do Face ID like 50 times and it kept saying that and I was looking for answers everywhere. One video said to turn your brightness all the way up and I did that and it worked. I don’t know if that was just a coincidence but I think it fixed it.

The same happened. Tried loads of things which didn’t work. But what has just worked is when trying to reset Face ID, i clicked on different combinations of ‘use Face ID for’ miraculously one worked, I can’t remember which one worked but it was the second or third one down. Good luck!

Suddenly my I phone would not accept Face ID. I did turn off /update.. everything. 3 hours later I read this forum as the camera kept saying can’t see your face move closer.. etc etc.

One person said they spat on screen and wiped .

i did this…

Went back into settings.. asked for photo I’d… Presto .. photo taken .. everything restored.😊
