Updated my iPhone 11 to.ios 17.01 last night. Since then, my face id won't work. I get error messages or it says face id not available. I thought I could reset face ID but it's not letting me do that either
. Rebooting the phone didn't help. Everything was working fine until the ios 17 update finished installing.

It is quite a rare issue, it may occurs somtime when the new software crashed on your device. These steps may resolve your issue:
A. Hard Reset
Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
B. Reset Face ID by turn off your device passcode and set up Face ID passcode
Settings> Face ID & Passcode> Turn Passcode Off> Set Up Face ID Passcode
C. Connect to Mac and Restore iPhone
Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
Make sure to back up your phone before restoring it, I hope this instruction will resolve your issue.

All of this advice is nonsense. Report it to Apple is your best hope of having this addressed properly. “Genius” or “Tech Support” are not familiar with the issue so will recommend whatever is written in front of them. Feedback - iPhone - Apple
It’s a gigantic pain in the ***. This have been happening for months and not a word from Apple. You are one of hundreds who have had the misfortune of upgrading to the latest iOS and had FaceID break indefinitely. As before, log it as an issue as Apple won’t budge until they see a critical mass complain. Feedback - iPhone - Apple
Same here! Customer service is claiming there isn’t a fix to this glitch after over an hour on phone. Extremely aggravating, it was perfectly fine BEFORE this update. So give us another update to FIX the bug they clearly have in their update!? Nothing works they suggest, so want me to drive over 2 hours one way to the nearest Apple Store to have a tech TRY to see if they can get it to work, with no guarantee. CSR virtually ran diagnostics on the phone, have screenshots of error messages receive. Then wanted me to leave feedback on an Apple site in hopes someone there would gather the information, notice the issue and have a resolution. Also tried blaming the otterbox case and screen protector I’ve had on the phone since I purchased over a year ago. (Never had a problem with it before, why today????). Tried it anyway with taking them off. No luck. Force restarting phone didn’t help either. Guess we are stuck this way for now. Might be time to switch back to Android- more reliable and less headache.
I spoke to Apple also for a long time. I have been told that this issue is now CLOSED as they believe that after investigation, this is not a software problem. If it is a hardware problem and you have AppleCare or you are within warranty they can look at it. It may cost you money to have it “repaired”. Otherwise, everybody’s FaceID failure on this forum is either a) the small minority who have a dirty phone/camera area, or b) the majority and this is co-incidental and will not be investigated further.

First of all you should try to restart your device( different way ) : go to settings > General > their shutdown, wait for a few minutes then power it on. Make sure your notch area is clean and clear. you said you already reset face id then skip this step. If nothing else works then according to them erase all content from your phone hope this step will fix the issue. For the steps please refer to the guide I mentioned.

Thanks for responding. That didn't change anything. Just tried it again. But like I said, I've rebooted my phone several times. It just says face id not available. And I only updated because I read articles that said update because there was a security update
