Face ID stopped working on my iPhone after iOS 17 update

Updated my iPhone 11 to.ios 17.01 last night. Since then, my face id won't work. I get error messages or it says face id not available. I thought I could reset face ID but it's not letting me do that either

. Rebooting the phone didn't help. Everything was working fine until the ios 17 update finished installing.

It is quite a rare issue, it may occurs somtime when the new software crashed on your device. These steps may resolve your issue:

A. Hard Reset

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

B. Reset Face ID by turn off your device passcode and set up Face ID passcode

Settings> Face ID & Passcode> Turn Passcode Off> Set Up Face ID Passcode

C. Connect to Mac and Restore iPhone

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

Make sure to back up your phone before restoring it, I hope this instruction will resolve your issue.

"It's quite a rare issue" Judging by the 246 "Me too" tags, I would not call that rare. In fact the real number it affects is in the thousands over the last 2 years. I've been following this closely and it's scandalous to be honest. It seems, that ios16 in particular caused this function to brick in some way, on some devices, and there is NO solution out there that works universally. Every support person issues the same suggestions that never work. It takes so long, people get fed up when it fails and wait til the next time. I think it's a hardware/software glitch that Apple will not address or own up to as, if word spreads, inevitably it could go legal. Just my personal thoughts. But rare, it aint.

Both Apple senior advisor and in store rep told me it’s not a known issue. Wonder if anyone else has had their phone checked in a store. They told me I had a hardware problem even though I never had any problem with FaceID until iOS17. They said it’s coincidence other people are having the same issue. Literally a nurse at my doctors appointment today said the same thing happened to her. Apple literally said FaceID isn’t that important. Lol

I did what an AT&T representative told me to do last Monday and it worked temporarily. I have been doing a soft shutdown at least twice a day, sometimes 3 times. The latest software fix is a disaster. Me and everyone else paid a lot of money for our phones. And whether we can afford to go and purchase a new phone is moot. We are ALL tired of functions not working and want what we pay for.

Happened to me as well. I have an iPhone 11 Pro and once it was update to 17.01, the FaceId hardly worked. I tried resetting the face ID but the camera doesn't recognize my face and thus refuses to scan (I got partly scanned scanned at one point but it drops out). Restoring the device seems like a bad option to me instead instead of getting this to work like it was prior to the update.

Iphone 13Pro - face id stopped working after 17.1 update. I have 2 13Pro models and the issue is only present on one of the phones. After trying several suggestions, took the phone to the Apple store. No surprise as the Apple rep knew exactly what was happening and stated it was either a software or hardware issue. After running diagnostics, was told the resolution would require a repair for $250.00. As there are almost 2,000 responses as " happened to me" on this issue, seems like Apple would take note. Not sure how a software update could cause a hardware issue.
