Face ID stopped working on my iPhone after iOS 17 update

I have the same problem and I don’t know how to fix it either

Adding to my issue on Face ID, Portrait mode in camera is also not working!!! Definitely a problem with iOS 17. All this was fine earlier in iOS 16

Go back to 16.02 ! It works!

How can I go back to iOS 16??

i had to shutdown, restart and reset faceID. The process itself it simple. But many apps require reset. Some require delete and re-install. It's quite painfull

Apple needs another update to fix the last update. Face ID doesn’t work now. Tried turning it off so I can sign into my apps. Didn’t work. Very frustrating. Maybe it’s time to go back to android

My issue since iOS 17.0.0 update and now have the iOS 17.0.2 and still happens but its random time every other times I restart the phone and in after using the phone for a while and I plug my phone to the charger and I try to wake the phone and use face ID to log in and it doesn’t want to unlock my phone and i have to type the password to log in and to remedy this issue I have to restart the phone and it works fine again! I mean its iOS 17 not iOS 2.0 this kind of bug should not be happening come on Apple!

Happens to me too. I've been experiencing problems with FaceID ever since I updated to iOS 17.

To make things worse, once I've installed 17.0.2 a whole set of much graver problems started to appear; my iPhone (12 Pro) would randomly initiate a restart, but will stay stuck in a loop and never reach the lock screen again (it just blinks the apple logo on and off). At that point, the only option I discovered I had is to connect it to my Mac and "Update" it. And here's the fun part: This also doesn't work if I try to do it immediately, I need to let the iPhone stay "bricked" for a good couple of hours before I can successfully update it using my Mac and regain access to it.

I noticed that the random restarts happen sometime after "Face ID" fails working and I get the error messages described by @sajam.

ps: ..the icing on the cake: the iPhone bricked when I was abroad, so no access to credit cards, boarding passes etc. Thank you apple!

This is a huge problem that Apple will not address until people make a bit of noise. It's not a coincidence that Face ID on hundreds if not thousands of iPhones stopped working after iOS 16.02 onwards. Having "support" suggest you get a costly repair is nonsense. It would appear that a software update has done something to trigger this problem on certain devices and they are totally ignoring it.

Having this problem too on my 14 Pro Max. Did pretty much the same thing OP did with regard to shutting down/restarting phone several times….just wanted to drop a post here so maybe if they see enough people with the issue they’ll put out something better than wiping your phone and starting over.

And magically, after not doing anything when I came in here to say thank you for the link, I was able to get in seamlessly with my Face ID whereas when I tried to get in here before to post it kept saying I wasn’t recognized (as did everything else I had set up to use Face ID as my passcode). That said; thank you for the link, I definitely will use it. I had that same thought after I posted. I was like I doubt that’ll go anywhere because I don’t think anyone at apple actually monitors the community user forum.
