Face ID stopped working on my iPhone after iOS 17 update

I used it dozens of times since the above without issue, so if the camera face in front gets smudged or something, I would have to wipe again, but so far, so good. I have even tried it with my face well to the side and it works, but if my face can't be seen it will ask for face or code. In fact just repeated ten times before posting.

It’s been working for me again consistently since my last post. I do have an update waiting to be installed now so we’ll see if it breaks again. The issue I’m having now is whatever app or browser I’m in will randomly close. It seems to only happen when I’m typing something (like I am here) but doesn’t happen all the time. I was replying to an email about 10 minutes ago and just as I was about to type ‘Best Regards’ and send it, outlook closed abruptly. Luckily it saved the draft but I’ve been in other community forums replying to something and it closes and when I go back in, everything I’ve written is gone. Hopefully this update I have pending fixes that!

I’ve been searching for months for a pattern with this issue and so far, believe that: not all iPhone are the same. They’re assembled in different countries, different specs etc. it sounds like some version of iOS 16 essentially bricked the capacity of the True Depth Sensor. To repair this on thousands of phones is not viable.

This issue presents itself in many ways. I initially had a big problem with my iPhone 13, but I was able to resolve most of it. The only remaining annoyance is that the phone requires me to enter my password to continue using Face ID much more often than it used to. In the past it was rare, maybe after a hard reboot, but now it is sometimes a couple of times a day. Requiring a password makes the phone less secure since it happens at random and one never knows who might be looking.

I thought it was my 12 pro bugging out, and then I upgraded again with 17.0.3 and the Face ID crashed out and I am unable to reenable it. This was after resetting it. I’m hoping a future update fixes it. I’m still on the fence about the 15 pro since I have no problem waiting for 16 models if my phone survives.

Same issue here. i cannot reset face ID. Even putting my complete face in side the white box corners, it won't recognize and keeps telling me to put my face into full view. Sometime indicates move face higher even when onlyh top 1/3 of my head is in box. They have broken something.

None! This is what I have been told by Apple. And given very few amongst the hundreds who are experiencing this issue have been offered a technical solution, I’ve arrived at this conclusion all on my own-io.

Dear Mr Ghost. You are right. Wrong of me to repeat what an Apple Tech Support person told me. What was I thinking? Back on topic though, if anyone has any solutions to Face ID fixes, it would be great to hear!

I sent the phone to apple support and they asked for usd 500 to replace the Face ID camera and for some reason they said they will replace the battery too!! That’s like half the price of the phone itself!!!!

You can get it to work, but in my case it asks for password to activate Face ID at least once a day and sometimes two or three times a day and for none of the normal reasons, just first thing that comes up when unlocking the screen. Before 17.x it was more like once per week or less. The frequent password entry makes the phone less secure.

I think you are very close. I believe it is something to do with the Proximity sensor / sensitivity but triggered by an iOS update. The sensor does work, just not very often. Apple are aware of this but they have not said anything about fixing it.

J’ai réinitialisé FACEID et je ne peux plus m’enregistrer. Je constate que ça plante lorsque mes yeux sont détectés. Sinon la caméra se lance bien et on peut même voir qu’elle fonctionne via une caméra infrarouge.

dès que j’ouvre les yeux op! Ça m’indique que FaceID n’est pas disponible.

J’ai eu une opératrice à qui j’ai parlé de ce forum.

elle n’a pas cherché à me renvoyer vers un problème hardware. Elle a tenté de faire un diagnostic en se connectant à mon téléphone mais ça a échoué : elle me rappellera demain soir.

elle a évoqué le fait que ça puisse être un problème côté Apple mais dans le certifier.

elle souhaite aller au bout du diagnostic de mon téléphone : nous verrons demain et en lancerons un nouveau

aujourd’hui FaceID a mieux fonctionné mais toujours pas comme il devrait, beaucoup d’échecs.

J’ai essayé de retirer le verre trempé il y a deux jours.

ça a marché oui. Deux heures.

la situation est strictement la même avec ou sans protections.

avez vous juste restauré votre iPhone ou l’avez vous réinstallé en mode recovery ?

voila 24H que mon faceID fonctionne sans problème. Je n’ai rien fait de plus j’ai même ma coque et mon verre trempé plein de bulles ….

je soupçonne qu’un calibrage a distance ait pu être fait. Ou en êtes vous de votre côté ? J’ai installé également hier soir la dernière maj dev mais ça fonctionne très bien depuis hier matin.
