UPDATE: TVOS 17 Audio Issues Require Daily Reboot

Update (9.22.23):

I have discovered that Apple Arcade and other Apple Apps do not cause audio issues. Only the streaming apps. You can load Hulu for example, and within a few minutes, it causes audio issues beginning with the system click sounds when navigating, then bleeding over to no audio at all. Requires a reboot. I checked app versions and it looks like TVOS 17 was rolled out, but app versions were not updated. Usually with iOS, you will see a bunch of apps being updated prior to a new OS version being rolled out. This does not appear to have happened with TVOS 17. It would seem, from what I can tell in my observations, that the streaming apps need to be updated to accommodate the new TVOS 17.

I apologize for posting this again, but it dose not look like you can go back and update/edit a previous post.

Original post:

Immediately after upgrading to TVOS 17 I noticed audio issues that first present while on the home screen, the system clicks only intermittently play. This is also true when in apps (Settings, Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, etc.)

At first it was an annoyance but did not affect streaming performance. But within a few hours of uptime, the audio issues "bleed" to streaming. Presenting as no audio at all.

I force quit the streaming app, but no audio remains. Also no audio on home screen or other apps.

Restarting the Apple TV provides a temporary work around, but within the span of 1 day, the audio drops out completely. In the interim, system sounds are only intermittent.

Setup:

Apple TV 4K 3rd generation 128GB (purchased 2 weeks ago)

Ethernet connection to router

Samsung 75" TU7000 series TV

HDMI eARC connection to Samsung S series soundbar

TV setup to pass-through audio to the soundbar

I have fiddled with audio settings, to no avail.

I believe this to be a software bug because at no point prior to upgrading to TVOS 17 did I have any audio issues.

It might be a good idea to discontinue posting on this updated thread. There is more activity in the original post. I apologize for the confusion. Also, here is my workaround that's worked for 4 days now.

TVOS 17 Audio Issues Require Daily Reboot - Apple Community

I am happy to report that I have not had to reboot my Apple TV for 3.5 days now. It would appear that I have found a workaround. Unfortunately, it looks like this may not apply to everyone.

Samsung TU7000 series (2020) TV:

Expert Sound Settings

HDMI eARC = off

Apple TV:

Navigation Sounds = off

Sound Effects & Music = off

I observed a couple oddities during the last 3.5 days but it did not require me to reboot.

Hulu app - sometimes (maybe once or twice a day) when switching live channels, there is no audio for the first 1 minute or so. Going back to previous channel or any other channel there is audio. Going back to the desired channel, no audio, and 1 minute "clock" starts again. Hulu app has not been updated since TVOS 17 release.

Netflix - on one occasion when watching a documentary, the video paused while audio continued to play. I hit the skip forward 10s button and it immediately synced back up. I went back to see if it was the documentary, and it was not. It played normally through the suspected part.

At this point, I feel like I can settle in for the long haul on this while Apple works this out.

I understand this is not going to work for everyone.

AppleTV 4K (A4123), tvOS 17.1, Back to wireless as Ethernet Cable still results in Audio issues, iTunes Music App breaks up so device is not usable. Back to AppleTV (A1625), Ethernet Connection, Lower speed, no issues except slower restart and performance - all works good so AppleTV 4K will become a table drink coaster until a new tvOS update or perhaps another type of device.

AppleTV 4K (A4123, tvOS 17.3, Ethernet Cable, Performed a Reset expecting to go back to a factory default tvOS but even with a manual install it reinstalled tvOS 17.3. Audio/Video (click and/or momentarily blank screen) still occurs.

I also have an older AppleTV (A1625) connected, wireless connection, tvIOS 17.3 and no audio/video issues at all.

I will continue to test AppleTV 4K as I discover new things that might work. If possible will look to return IOS to it's original version ver. 15 or 16 (??) as out of the box this worked flawlessly until tvOS ver. 17 - Hopefully something will improve in the future but for now this is a useless AppleTV 4K

AppleTV 4k (A2843), unplug and did a restart (Wanted to do a restart to ver. 16.??) but ver. 17.3 was reinstalled, Audio/Video issues still prevail (more frequently). Still remains a useless AppleTV 4k. I've looked for more detailed apps to troubleshoot but can't find any sources.

Old AppleTV (1625) with tvOS 17.3 works flawlessly and will continue to use for now. I plan to visit an Apple Store but most likely a useless visit, perhaps write a couple product reviews, will also explore future unkown options as time permits

Unfortunately that’s not my issue. I wish it was! I’m very tech savvy, so I have tried all I can think of. All of a sudden the 1 Apple TV that took the update automatically (as I stopped my others asap) no longer works with turning my TV on/off. The setting is there and correct as it’s always been, it just isn’t working. So when I turn off the Apple TV with the weird new display that comes up, my TV is now still on, and it changes to no signal as the Apple TV is “off” but the light itself remains on. It’s incredibly annoying because now when my TV is off I can’t be sure my Apple TV is obviously, and because it’s in a very dark room and when I’m laying there trying to sleep … all I see is that stupid white light lol. I’m so annoyed I have to get my TV remote to power on and off the TV again. Who does that anymore?😅😒

Yeah, that is what I plan to do if it still has issues after the 17.x update I hear we should be getting soon. Right now my workaround seems to work. I haven't had to reboot it for almost 2 weeks now. There are still quirky things that happen but none of it requires a reboot. So I'm hoping the next update fixes it, if not, then I will do as you did. Thanks for letting us know that this worked for you.
