iOS 17 official non-beta release, if I add a new contact as VIP then ALL my inbox mail shows up in the VIP folder, if I remove a contact from VIP, then my entire VIP folder goes empty. There are not any filters like “unread” on when everything disappears. It’s completely repeatable, add one VIP, all mail is VIP, remove one VIP, all VIP mail is gone, etc.

I deleted the mail app, then reinstalled by going to the App Store and searching for “Mail”, it was second from top. After reinstalling, I went into Settings > Mail > Accounts, and for each of the accounts (I have 10!) I had to go in and flip the switch to “on” for Mail. After that I went into the Mail app, it started downloading all my email again and now I only have VIP in the VIP folder now.
Note: to re-enable iCloud email it’s slightly different… when you tap on it from the list of accounts, it takes you to the Apple ID screen. From there you go to iCloud > iCloud Mail > Use on this iPhone/iPad.
Also: prior to this I tried updating to the latest iOS and I tried removing just my Gmail account as others had suggested. Neither of those fixed the issue for me. Doing it this way reinstalling the mail app kept me from having to set up all my accounts from scratch. You just have to flip the switches back to the on position in the settings page and you’re set!
17.1 does NOT fix it. I ensured my VIP folder was showing no emails before updating, then I updated, still no VIPs, I added a new contact as a VIP, then that contact’s email were the only emails in my VIP folder even though I have dozens of contacts marked VIP. I then removed that contact as VIP and the folder is empty again.
So, yea, still broken, just broken differently.
17.0.1 does not fix the issue.

17.0.2 is an iPhone 15 only update. So I guess the rest of us have to wait until 17.0.3?

Correct 17.0.3 did nothing to fix this issue.
I can confirm that iOS/iPadOS 17.0.3 does not fix the issue. No problem with VIP in the latest MacOS builds.
I also have a case open with Apple since release day, no feedback yet.
I tried deleting and re-adding accounts and so far only the most recent VIP emails are showing which is not how it was before the glitch. I will update if all of them come back.
Same with 15 pro. Deleting reinstalling mail app and accounts doesn’t work. Hoping it gets fixed soon
I have iOS 17.3 and it’s still isn’t fixed and it’s still happening. You can’t add any VIPs because your whole mailbox ends up in the VIP mailbox it’s just a mess.
Try removing one of your contacts as VIP and then check your vip folder again, bet it’s totally empty.
I would suggest First to delete the Mail app that comes with iPhone. Reinstall it and then check your status see what happens that’s the easiest one first
Wait - Gmail?!? You only deleted/re-added Gmail to fix this on all accts? This problem has been driving me nuts, I tells ya, nuts! I wonder if the capacity to rebuild mailboxes, a la MacOS, would be a strategy. Too bad unavailable on iPad.
I didn’t realize this problem until today when I added a new email as VIP, and every email was added to my VIP folder. I’ve played with settings most of the day and finally did a search. I’m glad that I’m not the only one with this issue. So annoying. I went back and deleted the VIP I added, now no “badges” are showing on VIP folder, even though some individual emails have the yellow star indicator in my mail inbox. Sooooo annoying.
So I been having this issue.
At first it put all the emails into vip.
after signing out of everything it fixed only half way by giving me vip but only vip of that day, but at least I did not every ALL MY email in vip.
today I woke up to all my email in vip.
