VIP Mail Folder missing on iPhone after iOS 17 Update

iOS 17 official non-beta release, if I add a new contact as VIP then ALL my inbox mail shows up in the VIP folder, if I remove a contact from VIP, then my entire VIP folder goes empty. There are not any filters like “unread” on when everything disappears. It’s completely repeatable, add one VIP, all mail is VIP, remove one VIP, all VIP mail is gone, etc.

I deleted the mail app, then reinstalled by going to the App Store and searching for “Mail”, it was second from top. After reinstalling, I went into Settings > Mail > Accounts, and for each of the accounts (I have 10!) I had to go in and flip the switch to “on” for Mail. After that I went into the Mail app, it started downloading all my email again and now I only have VIP in the VIP folder now.

Note: to re-enable iCloud email it’s slightly different… when you tap on it from the list of accounts, it takes you to the Apple ID screen. From there you go to iCloud > iCloud Mail > Use on this iPhone/iPad.

Also: prior to this I tried updating to the latest iOS and I tried removing just my Gmail account as others had suggested. Neither of those fixed the issue for me. Doing it this way reinstalling the mail app kept me from having to set up all my accounts from scratch. You just have to flip the switches back to the on position in the settings page and you’re set!

Exactly, same here, plus I have zero gmail mailboxes connected anyway. All of mine are Apple and Microsoft based mailboxes. When I was on with supper, we tried removing and adding them back to no avail.

From what I can tell, once the VIPs are completely cleared out, it seems to work for newly incoming VIP mail, but obviously the moment you add/remove anyone as a VIP it resets back to blank again.

This is a flat out coding bug, it’s known, and there’s no workaround.

We need a patch.

I was having the same issue on my iPhone and iPad. I deleted my mail account (Gmail) and then re-added the account to each device. When it re-populated, the VIP folder was working correctly again. I hope this helps you, too.

Tried deleting Gmail from all my devices, unfortunately made no difference.

The only way I have been able to get VIP working was by signing out of all email accounts, iCloud and purchases account. Logging back in just with my iCloud account after resetting networks, then VIP worked.

That is not a a solution for me as I have to have different iCloud and purchases accounts for historical reasons.

If I sign out of my iCloud purchases account, and sign in using the correct account, the issue returns immediately.

I had an update on my phone today for 17.1 - which I already had 17.3 and that is when my trouble started. I did the update back to 17.1 and my VIP folder is working again. This was not mentioned in the list of bugs fixes - but I no longer have the problem. Another thing I wanted to mention, a lot of comments about removing Gmail account and re-adding…. I do not have a Gmail- so this did not affect me.

Issue started today on 17.0.3 when I added a new contact to VIP list. Afterwards ALL unread email was showing under VIP. I updated to 17.1 but the issue was not fixed. I removed all VIP contacts and issue was not fixed. I removed all email accounts from iPhone and VIP went to zero (of course b/c there's no email at all). I added them back and they show up under VIP even without any contacts added to VIP.

Apple needs to fix this asap

You can’t remove them. Only delete them. I spent hours deleting the ones I didn’t want and had to leave the rest there. You can’t move them to inbox because they are in the inbox. If you make another VIP you will get all new ones back again. I have iOS 17.3 and it didn’t fix it. It’s so frustrating. I’m so sorry I have and new iPhone and even updated it. Now I have to update to hope it fixes it.
