VIP Mail Folder missing on iPhone after iOS 17 Update

iOS 17 official non-beta release, if I add a new contact as VIP then ALL my inbox mail shows up in the VIP folder, if I remove a contact from VIP, then my entire VIP folder goes empty. There are not any filters like “unread” on when everything disappears. It’s completely repeatable, add one VIP, all mail is VIP, remove one VIP, all VIP mail is gone, etc.

I can confirm this works. The update to iOS 17.1 alone does not fix the problem. Steps to fix

  1. Updated to iOS to 17.1
  2. Remove all mailboxes
  3. Re-add all mailboxes
  4. VIP shows correctly (I did not remove any VIP ahead of time)

Here is my experience: Updated iOs to 17.0.1 everything was working fine. I had an issue with icloud saying it was full, even though i was at like 10% of used space. I signed out of icloud on my phone and back in. All my email at that moment in time should up in VIP.

I removed all VIP contacts and the VIP emails became empty. I added 1 VIP contact back and ALL of my email (not just for the VIP) were back in the list, but it is the exact same email as before we all should up, meaning no new email was added to the list.

Day 2, the VIP email list was cut in half. I didn't do anything. Also, only new emails that are no showing up in VIP are from the 1 VIP contact I added back.

I've since upgraded to iOs 17.0.3 and nothing has changed.

Agreed. More specifically, in

my VIP folder I get either none of my VIP emails at all, nor anything else (an empty list) or alternatively, I get every single email in my *entire* inbox regardless of the sender.

Come on Apple folks, filtering has been around since email's inception , its clearly not rocket science. Issuing a major release with such an obvious (and as yet uncorrected) flaw in a basic feature is not a good look.

So frustrating! iPhone 14pm yesterday was fine. Added a new iPad 12.9 pro. Had to u/d os out of box on new iPad. This morning my gmail has no vip in gmail folder on my iPhone or my iPad! iPhone is running 17.0.3 and my iPad is 17.0.3. Apple needs to take this issue seriously! For over a month it seems they have been dragging their heels on a known issue. This is a critical issue that needs to be addressed asap!

Issue started today on 17.0.3 when I added a new contact to VIP list. Afterwards ALL unread email was showing under VIP. I updated to 17.1 but the issue was not fixed. I removed all VIP contacts and issue was not fixed. I removed all email accounts from iPhone and VIP went to zero (of course b/c there's no email at all). I added them back and they show up under VIP even without any contacts added to VIP.

Apple needs to fix this asap

You can’t remove them. Only delete them. I spent hours deleting the ones I didn’t want and had to leave the rest there. You can’t move them to inbox because they are in the inbox. If you make another VIP you will get all new ones back again. I have iOS 17.3 and it didn’t fix it. It’s so frustrating. I’m so sorry I have and new iPhone and even updated it. Now I have to update to hope it fixes it.

I had an update on my phone today for 17.1 - which I already had 17.3 and that is when my trouble started. I did the update back to 17.1 and my VIP folder is working again. This was not mentioned in the list of bugs fixes - but I no longer have the problem. Another thing I wanted to mention, a lot of comments about removing Gmail account and re-adding…. I do not have a Gmail- so this did not affect me.

17.1 does NOT fix it. I ensured my VIP folder was showing no emails before updating, then I updated, still no VIPs, I added a new contact as a VIP, then that contact’s email were the only emails in my VIP folder even though I have dozens of contacts marked VIP. I then removed that contact as VIP and the folder is empty again.

So, yea, still broken, just broken differently.

After 17.1 installation, only new VIP email is showing up in my iOS VIP email folder. The older 23,418 non VIP unread email is still in my VIP folder. Not completely "fixed" yet.

This is not what I want, but an improvement over the bug introduced with iOS 17. The constant flood of new email is now just in my All Inboxes.

I'm still looking for a fix or at least an easy way to remove or mark read 20k "VIP" emails on my phone.

Interesting that iOS and MacOS mail do not share similar VIP email implementations. I'm guessing iOS has some type of backend support for VIP? The VIP email filter/folder on MacOS is super slow. My own Smart Mailbox is much faster than the favorites VIPs.

iOS 17.1 - it's still broken for me.

I "removed" all email accounts by going to settings -> mail -> accounts and toggling off email for each of my accounts (I did not "delete account" for each of my accounts). Then I re-enabled them one-by-one. As soon I re-enabled a gmail based email, the VIP problem came back (non-VIP emails showing up under VIP)

I just did this a few minutes ago. I did not have to delete the Mail app. Instead, I went into iPhone Settings > Mail > Accounts. From that list, I tapped into any accounts experiencing the VIP issue (for me, it was only my Gmail) and tapped Delete Account. After that deleted, I immediately tapped Add Account at bottom and added my Gmail. Now, VIP is working correctly. (Note that I also completely closed and reopened the Mail app too, but unsure if that was necessary.)

to solve this issue I did the most recent update on my phone, next I deleted all email accounts from my phone then check the VIP folder, I didn't delete my iCloud email account, I then deleted all the emails that remained in my VIP folder from my iCloud account, and re-installed all of my email accounts and now my VIP folder is working again.

I have an iphone 12 pro max
