iOS 17 bug: Wi-Fi not connecting after restart iPhone and iPad.

After iOS 17 update when I close the device, and then open it again, does not connect automatically with my Wi-Fi. I have to get in the settings and then close and open the Wi-Fi so it connects.

This is happening to all our family devices. iPhone 13, iPhone 14 plus, iPad mini, iPad Pro M2.

Finally figured it out. Dang, was starting to look at android phones. If you have done all the routine things and still no help, see if you have the google one app. Delete it. Even if you have VPN turned off, doesn’t matter. Doesn’t matter that it all worked fine before the 17 update. I did everything including a complete restore of my phone, but since other iphones in the home with the same ios update did not have the problem, I figured it was some combination of the update and an app. I knew there was talk of von software causing an issue and I had this turned off. Didn’t matter. As soon as I deleted the google one app, wifi auto join and password entry was automatic once again. I am sure apple knows this but probably doesn’t care so much since it is a google *** incompatibility with the new upgrade, but son of a … Not a fun time figuring that out. Really odd that despite turned off in the main settings it was preventing my auto wifi recognition. I’d would think that worth looking at any VPN app as a possible suspect. Hope this helps anyone in this same situation.

This happened to me after my iOS 17.1 upgrade. Only my iPhone 14 Plus was impacted. It would connect to the home WiFi then disconnect within 3-5 minutes. This went on for 2-3 days. No other devices in my house were disconnecting from our home WiFi. I troubleshooted everything out there from resetting our router, rebooting my phone, forgetting/deleting the network, turning off private WiFi, confirmed auto connect was on for my network, etc. I saw one solution I hadn’t tried and it was going to settings>general>transfer or reset iPhone> reset>reset all network connections. I did this around noon today and my phone hasn’t disconnected from WiFi while at home and automatically connected when I left for a while and came home. It’s been 8.5 hours with no issues now.

Don’t know if this will help, but I am definitely on to something. I signed into the same network same setting but as a guest as I have the two options on my router set up for guest access just to see if the problem resolved and it did. My phone automatically connects and enters password automatically. So now I will see why. My problem with my regular system began with the update to 17.1 and later including still with 17.2. Other phones still on 17.0.3 are fine. I did everything ever listed. Restarted router, reset network settings, erased and restored entire phone, removed any vpn stuff. of course had auto join on. Called apple support. They could not figure it out. Tested by going on airport mode and off - no good. And of course tested with phone off and back on. Will not remember the home wifi. But now does on the guest wifi. oh, and also made my IP address static. Didn’t help. I may just delete the wifi router ssid and start fresh with new name since works with the guest wireless. Definitely some upgrade glitch, but finally found how to fix it.

What have you tried so far? This is a complicated multifaceted issue. It appears to be an issue with iOS 17 and WiFi security. Not only has iOS been upgraded but WiFi security has also upgraded from WPA to WPA2 and now WPA3. Your iPhone should automatically use the higher security but I think that process is flawed. I performed a factory reset on my router and rebuilt the WiFi network from scratch using the higher security WPA3. Then I performed a network reset on all of my iOS devices and added network connections to the new WiFi network. I also had to do the same thing to all of my Microsoft devices, Linux devices and printing devices. I have had no issues since.

Issue confirmed due to IOS 17.2 recent update. Factory reset not solve this issue.

Feedback is logged FB13371807.

Found no connection when connected to WiFi 6 AX 5G band. No issue on 2.4G and 5G Legacy.

Once iPhone connected to WiFi 6 5G AX, it impacted network disconnection and instability on other device in same access point. Confirmed with another access point too issue still remained.

Speedtest app just unable to complete and this cause unable to call in or out if you’re using WiFi calling.

Update: It’s a glitch with the new update, however I have solved the problem for me and the failing to remember my home network and making me manually select and re-enter my password. As I noted earlier in the thread, I could pick my guest network ssid and it would be remembered and auto logged into. I finally took the step to rename my main SSID (name of the network) and bam. All working well again. Had to reconnect all my ring cameras and thermostat to the new wifi name. But issue with my iphone all resolved. Hope it works for anyone else having the same issue. Good luck.

See if changing your network name that is broadcasted for wifi fixes it. I did everything mentioned in this list before figuring that out. Even had apple support on the phone. It is a pain to redo the ring cameras etc... but it worked like a charm. Back to normal now. I did log into my guest network first and that worked so then changed my main WIFI name and logged into that. Best of luck.

Can confirm this happens on multiple devices, both an iPhone and an iPad upgraded to iOS 17. On restart, WiFi simply fails to connect until it is manually disabled and re-enabled. It's specific to iOS 17, because an iPhone which still has iOS 16 does connect automatically to the same WiFi network on restart. And on the iOS 17 devices, this behavior only began after the devices were upgraded from iOS 16.

In fact, the Control Center will show the name of the network that the iPhone or iPad is trying to connect to, reading as though it's connected, but without a signal strength indicator where the WiFi signal strength should normally be, until WiFi is manually toggled off and on again. This is especially annoying for an iPhone that restarts overnight on its own, fails to connect to WiFi, and chews into cellular data allotment during the night.
