No iMessage notification sound after IOS 17.0.1 update on iPhone 13 Max

After updating to IOS 17.0.1, I have noticed that I no longer get sound notifications for text/imessage unless I have the phone unlocked and Messages app opened. While it is opened, messages will audibly alert me. This is while using standard apple sounds. Nothing custom. The only way to get it the sound notifications to work when not in messages is to enable alerts for lock screen, notification center or Banners. None of which I have ever had to enable to get sound to work, nor want alerts when my screen is locked.

Has anyone experienced this and if so is there a way to fix the sounds without enabling any of the visible banner alerts?

Sounds like a bug in the new 17.0.1 as I have duplicated it on both the 12 and the 13.

Talked to a Senior Adviser, he had me go into sounds/haptics and run the volume bar up and down three times, turn off notifications in messages, shutdown, restart, turn on notifications in messages. Hard to figure but this fixed the problem of no sounds for text messages. Phone call sound was working but not texts. Fixed for me, hope this may help others.

I am up to date on Software iOS 17.1.1. and that's when this problem began for me on iphone 13~ I am not going to read through all these posts as it is a waste of time since no one has any idea why there is no notification sounds nor how to correct; however, I will ask APPLE, to please fix this problem ASAP! After the expense of these phones, all consumers expect excellent service.

If there is something all consumers need to know then please advise. Thank you.

Hi, But not for me, have enabled all > No Change. Remains silent unless the Messages App is actually open and in use.

Seriously, the amount of minor Bugs these days is ridiculous. Was a time when there was the odd one or two which usually disappeared in the next update. These days, it’s dozens of major Bugs persistent across updates.

Providing feedback to Apple appears to be a waste of time and effort.

Same issues here. No sounds. Used to get swoosh when sending texts. Now nada. NOW phone won't ring since update (iPhone 13 mini). Tried all sorts of combinations of settings per other respondents' suggestions, as well as doing my own research.

GET THIS FIXED. Missing calls etc. is extremely serious. People with medical reasons to have phones are being put at risk. And the nuisance value alone is a big issue. What is happening with Apple?

Too much "Titanium" Not enough service or consistency for LONG-TIME, loyal, users!

I am having the same problem. I have many alerts turned off on my Apple Watch but since the last update, all of my settings have changed. Now , I get all notifications on my watch, which is of course draining my watch battery. Before, my watch would vibrate, but the text sound. I had assigned to various texting and calling contacts were accurate. Now sometimes my watch vibrates sometimes the phone vibrates. Sometimes the tone is correct and other times both are completely silent. Had I known this I would’ve never updated. And no, I don’t expect Apple to fix it quickly because Apple never admits they do anything wrong. i’m on iPhone 11 Pro.

I saw this VERY CLEARLY when my iPhone 15 Pro and I were in the car. I when I started the car, phone connected via Bluetooth, and I could see the ringer volume adjust to near zero. Shutting car off did not return it. If the phone was in, for exaple, Facebook, it would adjust the SPEAKER volume to near zero.

WORSE: we've experience this. I'm in the house, wife gets in car and starts, and MY PHONE connects to car, and kills the ringer volume.

I know I can turn off Bluetooth, but HEY! Disabling a major feature of the phone because of a bug is NOT COOL!

Hi PeaceBookie,

Same here. Past two years, continued from SE to brand new 13 Mini...which I bought in hopes of being able to update iOS and solve this problem.

I can't help noticing that this thread is less than six months old and already has NINE HUNDRED "Me toos"...not counting all the other Community threads about various failures of iPhone audio notifications.

On a hunch that this might have something to do with doing a reboot while the physical audio switch is in mute, I just spent several hours experimenting, and... nothing conclusive. Though I did get the audio to ring here and there, which was exciting. Also discovered interference when the screen is black. (It seems to go black after 10 seconds, even with auto-lock turned off.)

At what point do we stop putting up with "phones" that don't "ring"? Just asking for a friend.

OhRayOhRay, you are making my day.

Actually, more like making my TWO YEARS of iPhone not ringing when called (but only sometimes) and (even more times) not giving audio notification of text messages. This has persisted through two handsets and numerous iOS updates, erratically it seemed, with no pattern I could detect, despite repeated chats with Apple Support, doomscrolling the Community, hours of trial and error, and two separate visits to Genius Bars, the nearest of which is 250 miles from where I live.

You are my first "ray" of hope on this, thanks SO much!

Please, if anyone discovers a fix, do post the details so we don't have to choose between getting text alerts or linking to Bluetooth.
