No iMessage notification sound after IOS 17.0.1 update on iPhone 13 Max

After updating to IOS 17.0.1, I have noticed that I no longer get sound notifications for text/imessage unless I have the phone unlocked and Messages app opened. While it is opened, messages will audibly alert me. This is while using standard apple sounds. Nothing custom. The only way to get it the sound notifications to work when not in messages is to enable alerts for lock screen, notification center or Banners. None of which I have ever had to enable to get sound to work, nor want alerts when my screen is locked.

Has anyone experienced this and if so is there a way to fix the sounds without enabling any of the visible banner alerts?

Sounds like a bug in the new 17.0.1 as I have duplicated it on both the 12 and the 13.

Talked to a Senior Adviser, he had me go into sounds/haptics and run the volume bar up and down three times, turn off notifications in messages, shutdown, restart, turn on notifications in messages. Hard to figure but this fixed the problem of no sounds for text messages. Phone call sound was working but not texts. Fixed for me, hope this may help others.

Not sure if this helps anyone but if you go in to the Notifications Tab and for example under the Messaging section when you click on it you should see an option where it says Sound or Notifications not sure which one but it will say On next to it.. Click on it and on the next screen you should see 2 options.. The one thats checked says something about Direct messages or custom notifications.. Click on the bottom option that says All notifications or something like that and you should get the sound and notifications back on said application.. in this case it would be for the messages..

I maybe wrong and have mine set up completely incorrect but when you wear your watch, your watch becomes the main driver for notifications, alerts etc when you phone is locked.

i.e phone in pocket, wearing watch. (My watch pings and alerts me to either look on my watch or pull out my phone) it’s been that way forever for me) unless it’s a call then both ring out

I would unpair and restore - no harm in trying. Apple Support will ask you to do that should you call or go into store.

other things to check, make sure you have checked your volume levels on your watch

watch, settings, sounds, alert volume.

it maybe low and you’re missing the sounds ??

Updating to 17.1.1 did not solve the problem for me on iPhone 13 Pro Max. Apple Watch Series 7 at OS is 10.1.1.

The only way it works for me is if I turn off notifications on the Apple Watch settings. For instance, if I turn my RING app notification off on the watch setting, then it works with the lock screen. But I won’t get any notification on my watch at all.

Forgive me, I’m not very good with technology but, I did get my notifications turned on for text messages which stopped working after I did an update. In my text messages next to any and everyone who sent me a message, I noticed a bell with a line through it. I click on the bell and I think it turned blue or at least the line crossing it out went away. I’m now hearing/ tone when I receive a message. Hope this helps.

Spent hours digging into this yesterday.

Failure of audio alert _may_ correlate with:

  1. screen being black when message comes in, and/or
  2. having powered down + powered up while physical audio switch is in "off" position

A Verizon rep once told me it might help to do a Reset:

>Transfer or Reset iPhone

>>Reset

>>>Reset All Settings (not quite as scary as it sounds)

This did work for me a time or two, but only briefly. Yesterday I repeated the reset, and the fail returned after testing by <reboot-with-physical audio-switch-in-off-position>. If the screen is black when the message comes in, audio alerts do not sound, even though visual banners will appear once screen is back on.

I have turned off all features requiring "Attention" (isn't the point of a notification that your attention can be elsewhere?). I have turned off all Focus. I have set Auto-Lock at 2 minutes, but still the screen goes black, preventing sound notifications, within about 10 seconds once it is on the Lock Screen.

The downside of Reset All Settings is having to restore your preferences one by one. In my case, that required about half a dozen fixes afterwards.

Hoping someone else can test this possibility further and suggest fixes.

I had my doubts, but a half-hour of testing confirms what OhRay is saying about Bluetooth.

For the moment I can live without BT (thanks to a very old wired mouse), but we'll see when I install the new iMac, configured with a wireless keyboard...

Which is why I tried this:

BT off - iPhone

with

BT on - iMac

and audio text notification DOES seem to work (only 3 trials).

So maybe you can have Bluetooth on ONE device but not TWO.

However...

At least on my phones (13 Mini and previously, SE 2016) this sound notification issue has been a completely unpredictable bug: sometimes notifs come through, sometimes not. Sometimes they work at home with Bluetooth on both devices, sometimes they fail in car with no Bluetooth in range.

Still, it's the best (only) repeatable pattern I've found, after two years dealing with this, including repeated apologies to contacts who don't get a timely response because of it.
