Apple CarPlay not working with iPhone 15 (USB-C issue?)

My vehicle only has a USB adapter to connect to my stereo to enable Apple CarPlay. Now that I'm using a USB to USB-C cable, Apple CarPlay no longer works with the iPhone 15. Any ideas on how to address this? Should I try different cables or is this more of a fundamental issue with the new iOS or iPhone 15?

Many USB to USB-C cables and adapters support charging only, not data transfer, and data transfer is required for CarPlay.

Check with the manufacturer of the cable and/or its packaging to determine whether it is a charge-only cable or whether it is a data cable as well.

This is true for all cable manufacturers; for example, reliable cable company Anker sells both charge-only and full data cables.

Before I received my new iPhone I purchased a USB A to USB C cable and it works fine in my car.

Are you using a USB A to USB C cable? Did you have your car infotainment system forget your previous phone? Have you gone into Settings on your new iPhone > General > About > Name and give it a new name (not the same as the previous iPhone). This will have you approve using Apple CarPlay using the new iPhone through your Infotainment system.

FYI - this is the cable I bought and it works great : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3B73MWX?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

All - just following up on resolution here. It was the fact that the cable I was using wasn’t for data, only charging. I bought a Belkin USB-A to USB-C cable from Amazon and now my CarPlay is working. It just took a while for it to come in because everything was back ordered.

Thank you @lobsterghost1 and @Dogcow-Moof. Your direction helped me solve the issue.

USB cables appear to be a common issue. We agree not all cables are alike. iPhones use max 20W power and data transfer max at 10gbits. We need to be assured that cables we purchase are USB IF certified or better yet Implementers Forum Certified. Using a clean single certified cable, without problematic adapters, is the only way to go if you need to work with the troublesome "C" to "A" issue.

I fixed it with Belkin BoostCharge USB-C to USB-A cable for iPhone 15 Series.

Belkin actually produces cables for Apple and is certified to meet the standards,

IOS 17.2.1 now works seamlessly on my iPhone Pro Max 15 and my iPhone 13 -obviously no USB-C issues,

They haven't eliminated USB A support for Car Play on iPhone 15 models. I have iPhone 15 Pro Max and I use a USB A to USB C cable which is 5A and MFi Certified, which means it was designed for iPhone and it works just fine in my 2023 Genesis GV70. Not ALL Cables will work with iPhone and CarPlay. Some cables are only 3A, which will only work with Samsung devices. And some cables don't transfer Data, they just charge.

Update: Just renamed my phone, but not sure this was part of the issue. However, I did trying disconnecting and reconnecting my VPN and discovered that my iPhone 15 Pro will connect with CarPlay when my VPN is disconnected. If I reconnect to my VPN then unplug from my vehicle and immediately plug back in (all using the C connection/charging cord that came with my iPhone 15 Pro), I am unable to connect to CarPlay. My VPN seems to definitely be the deal breaker for my issue.

If this is an iOS issue, it would affect every single person who uses CarPlay with iPhone 15. But it's not. I have iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max and both work flawlessly in our two cars, every time we plug them in. You've come to the wrong conclusion. It's either a cable issue as you suggest it works, then doesn't work. Or it's an issue with your infotainment system. The thing is there are so many different infotainment system out there and many of them never get an update, until a user has an issue. And there are so many different cables out there and not all of them Mfi Certified.

You should contact your automobile manufacturer and also contact Apple for help. And maybe try a difference Mfi (Made for iPhone) cable.

Thank you all for the robust discussion. My CarPlay issue has been resolved on two vehicles.

Installed iOS 17.1. Replaced my cables with a USB-C to USB-A Belkin cable USB IF (Implementers Forum certified).

Deleted iPhone 13, Installed iPhone 15 Pro Max successfully. Reinstalled iPhone 13 successfully. Two phones connected to CarPlay on 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6.

Did the same on 2021 Toyota Hylander Hybrid successfully.

The trick now is to find good quality content for 2 vehicles with CarPlay!

try this first. plug one end of the Apple USB-C into the vehicles USB port, start the vehicle, wait for the infotainment screen to finish doing its startup (about a minute) than plug the USB-C into the iPhone. My GM system makes a short jiggle noise and the carplay then shows on the screen. The USB-C cable has current and connection detection chips in them. This could be the major reason why sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't.

Caution, USB-C cables are not all the same because the C refers to the connector's physical shape, pin count and it being symmetrical (can be plugged in either end and/or be rotated). USB-C cables can have different uses. The standard spec USB-C that meets the USB-IF standard and the one Apple sends with the iPhone 15 has a data transfer rate similar to USB-3 about 5 or 10 Gpbs (type 2 has 5 wires called hi-Speed and type 3.1 has 15 wires called Superspeed) and carries 5 Volt power at either 3.0 or 5.0 amps (15W and 25W). This spec is for a one meter aka 3 foot cable so longer ones will have lower data capability.

Special device supplied USB-C cables can also have higher power included to run hard drives, fast charging and carry HDMI signals. So that said when using a C it has to be designed for a specific use such as data transfer and wattage at a minimum. When buying a new one that is not an Apple part make sure it meets the USB-IF standard. They also contain a chip to allow it to work with different devices such as hard drives and video. There are many versions that have various wattage and data transfer capabilities.

ok I found out a way to get carplay to work each time with the iPhone 15 and my 2019 Chevy Blazer.

First off its not the cables, it's the sequence you connect and disconnect them. Always disconnect the USB C cable from the car FIRST, either with the car running or the car off. Always connect the cable to the iPhone FIRST and start the car and THEN connect the USB-C into the cars dash infotainment system. If the iPhone's green charging indicator shows, it's connected. If you get the sequence wrong and the charging indicator is no longer green you will have to reset the cars infotainment system using the procedure below for GM vehicles and find out how to do it on other brands. Another issue I noticed, if you leave the iPhones wifi on sometimes the MAPS app will show a searching for server message, just turn the wifi off and it will use the cell service.

How to reset the GM infotainment system:

Turn the vehicle on

Open the cars valet storage area, (the faceplate on Caddy and Corvettes and the glove box on others if it has the valet feature).

With the faceplate open, turn off the vehicle.

Open the driver’s side door.

Wait 60 seconds with the driver’s side door open

Close the drivers door and start the vehicle

Close the faceplate

Hi all, iOS 17.2 and the proper Belken USB - C to A one piece cable- no adapters , solved the problem.

Remember if you go out of cell range CarPlay drops. iPhone 15 by default uses 5G which requires more and closer cell towers. This appears to be a common problem. High cell traffic times and more rural location seems to be the persistent issue.

it's interesting that my postings on this subject are not cross linking.

Anyway here is a solution, and no iOS 17.2 did not fix the issue.

I found out a way to get Apple CarPlay to work each time with the iPhone 15 and my 2019 Chevy Blazer. I was having a similar issue with my older iPhone XR and my 2019 Corvette.

new, apparently a way to get the iPhone to connect after it no longer does, and if you can't reset your cars system try this, I have not verified it works yet, with all cables disconnected, rename your phone and restart it, maybe the car will now allow it to connect? if so let me know. right now, the sequence above works for me.

Problems with connectivity as described with my Ford Sync. I used a Belkin cord and problem solved.

Belkin BoostCharge Braided USB-C to USB-A Cord (2M/6.6ft) for iPhone 15 Series, Samsung Galaxy S24 Series, Note20, Google Pixel 7 & 8, iPad Pro,

I tried several China Mfgr’ed cords (at least 5 different brands) from USB A to multi end connector and single USB C and it didn’t work with my new iPhone 15 with my Ford Sync. Never recognized an Apple product was connected.

I hope this helps. Frustrating to not have it work when it worked with other iPhones with same older cord. Obviously directly related to the new iPhone 15. Same old cord worked perfect with iPhone 7, 10, XR, 11 and 14.
