Apple CarPlay not working with iPhone 15 (USB-C issue?)

My vehicle only has a USB adapter to connect to my stereo to enable Apple CarPlay. Now that I'm using a USB to USB-C cable, Apple CarPlay no longer works with the iPhone 15. Any ideas on how to address this? Should I try different cables or is this more of a fundamental issue with the new iOS or iPhone 15?

All - just following up on resolution here. It was the fact that the cable I was using wasn’t for data, only charging. I bought a Belkin USB-A to USB-C cable from Amazon and now my CarPlay is working. It just took a while for it to come in because everything was back ordered.

Thank you @lobsterghost1 and @Dogcow-Moof. Your direction helped me solve the issue.

It appears that we flushed this out to 3 moving parts:

  • Apple Software
  • Connectivity cables
  • Vehicle Infortainment systems

Assuming Apple has been receiving the feedback via AppleCare, and it gets elevated to engineering, a fix will usually appear in a new release or worst case new version.

USB cables appear to be a common issue. We agree not all cables are alike. iPhones use max 20W and data transfer max at 10gbits. We need to be assured that cables we purchase are USB IF certified or better yet MFi-certified (look it up). Using a clean single certified cable, without problematic adapters, is the only way to go if you need to work with the troublesome "C" to "A" issue.

Infotainment systems are focused on navigation because that is where the vehicle manufacturers make their after sale $ via advertising. Hence releases/upgrades target navigation to sell sponsors on maps. My understanding is that the car manufacturers have a 3 year cycle for new entertainment systems.

Update: Just renamed my phone, but not sure this was part of the issue. However, I did trying disconnecting and reconnecting my VPN and discovered that my iPhone 15 Pro will connect with CarPlay when my VPN is disconnected. If I reconnect to my VPN then unplug from my vehicle and immediately plug back in (all using the C connection/charging cord that came with my iPhone 15 Pro), I am unable to connect to CarPlay. My VPN seems to definitely be the deal breaker for my issue.

I tried multiple USB C to C, Including a Lightening 3.0 cable. (also tried C to A) Spoke to AppleCare for 45 minutes trouble shooting. They referred me to Hyundai (2023 Ionix 6 EV). No help.

Phone is iP 15 with iOS 17.0.3.

Bluetooth/USB on car works fine. iPhone 13 (iOS 16) CarPlay still works fine. Phones have different names.

Car Infotainment is thinking It's an Android device which I manually switch.

It appears that the car still doesn't recognize the new device.

Any thoughts were the old IPhone image is residing?

Thanks, Bruce

Tried all. Using the original iPhone cable. The vehicle recognizes the phone and Bluetooth works fine and phone charges.

Just rebooted phone and car infotainment system. iP recognizes car for BT. Wired connectivity charges the device.

Hyundai BlueLink support walked me through the same steps as AppleCare did.

Read the article on cables. The Belkin Lightening is approved on for iPhone 15. Apple sells it under accessories.

I'm stuck, but at least I don't stop at gas stations!

UPDATE: spent 3 hours with AppleCare level 2. switching cables and ports in car. Apparently the USB A port is the only one to use for connectivity for ApplePlay. USB C ports (which the car has 4) only charges.

Using iPhone 13(iOS 16), which works, took photos of screens on both devices and the vehicle dash screens, downloaded their tool uploaded the analytic file and photos for engineering.

Installed 17.1 - no help. My research is finding I'm not the lone user dealing with USB C connectivity problems. At least my phone is charged and I'm avoiding the news.

Waiting for Apple!

This is very strange so the first time I connected the iPhone 15 to the 2019 Blazer using the USB-C to C port it worked fine and then when I reconnected it after I started it up again it didn’t work. I reset the infotainment system there’s a special way to reset it then it worked then I went to start the car again it didn’t work, no charging no signal so I don’t think it’s technically the cable it must be an iOS issue.
