After applying the last update iOS 17.0.3 the heating issues seems to be resolved.

The iphone I have is an 15 Pro Max 512 GB black titanium and it does not overheat anymore...

Several tests were completed:

1) Charging with iphone original 20W charger and with a non apple cable - different USB-C to USB-C cable was used.

The phone is really cold when charging... I was surprised!

2) Tested to play youtube vide (high resolution) for approx. 45 min and the phone does not heat at all.

During this test I also tested to charge the phone while playing the video for 10-15 m and the results was the same, the phone does not overheat.

3) Filmed with the phone 4K @60fps my playing game on the laptop for 28 minutes.

Recording at 4K, 3840*2160 = 9GB video file size.

The phone is not very hot, you can feel the heat but is not even comparable how it was before the update.

4) The Geekbench 6 tested were executed several times (one after the other)

The tests for executed for 4, 5, 6 times in a row and the phone remains with very good temperature.

Of course you can feel the heat but only after the 4-5 time when the test run and is very cold comparared with how hot it was before the update.

Also the results of the tests are higher or at least the same with the previous tests that were executed before the latest update.

Geekbench 6 - test results:

1) Test results before the patch was applied (tested before on 25th and 28th-September-2023):

2930/7281 ; 2933/7296; 2921/7218; 2890/7167; 2903/7165; 2891/7165

2) Test results after patch applied (tested today on 05-October-2023):

2905/7209; 2897/7204; 2943/7357; 2954/7341; 2889/7185; 2915;7240

The battery life is something that also seems normal but at least for the moment for me I have the feeling that was a bit longer for my 14 Pro Max but I may be wrong... time will tell in another 10-20 days I will see how it goes.

Honestly I was expecting that the CPU performance to be reduced but comparing the tests results as it looks this is not the case.

Woow what can I say then congratulations to Apple engineers!

I will test the phone for another 5-6 days and if the issue is completly gone then the new iphone 15 Pro Max will remain and the 14 Pro Max will need to find a new owner.

Congratulations to Apple, not sure what was wroong and how the new iphone was fixed but is defintelly not heating anymore and works as expected!

Congratulations Apple and Thank You!

You are not the first to have reported this.

Troubleshooting an Overheating iPhone:

There are likely too many processes taking place. So, power off the phone, to let it cool, and then try clearing space. Have you recently filled you iPhone storage? Having low available storage can most certainly case overheating. process are likely taken up

Perform the following:

I. Cool Down the iPhone:

For a few hours, perform the following...

  • Power Off: the iPhone for a bit
  • Unplug: any Cables
  • Place it Atop: Laptop Cooler
  • Keep it in: an open space
  • Keep it Out of: direct sunlight

then...

2. Clear Space Using my User Tips:

See if you need to clear lots of space. System resources may be using up too much services, making it overheat. Internal storage cannot be upgraded. It is what it is. So, the maximum internal storage capacity never increases, even if you upgraded your iCloud plan. Learn More here: What's the Difference Between Device Storage and iCloud Storage? Apple Support

So, what to do...

My issue was I was filming in 4k 30 in Florida. It was about 90F out. About 15 minutes in the screen dimmed so bad it was almost black and I got a warning that the phone needed to cool down. I have filmed like this DOZENS of times with my 14 pro Max and yes it dimmed but you could still see the screen. Plus I never got a cool down warning. This wasn’t even a really hot day. I did have the 15 pro max in a case, but my 14 was in a case too. It is worse from a filming standpoint thermal wise, at least for me.

Today I had my phone get up to 100° doing nothing other than use an App that doesn’t even do anything other than view jobs.

I barely used my phone for the day and my battery was at 60% at 4 PM. I have never had that happen with my iPhone 14 Pro Max.

I called Apple and did a service call. They ran a diagnostic asked me a bunch of questions and of course said everything looked like it was fine. I have an appointment to go to the Apple Store on Monday of the coming week for them to look at it to see if maybe mine has an issue and I can get it swapped out on Warranty.

I have face similar heating issues:

1) while I was with the new iphone 15 Pro Max not connected to any power.

I had a flight and while I was close to my destination I wanted to use Google maps based on the GPS to see how close/far the airplane actually is to the destination airport.

The phone did not had any data connection (and no WIFI) but it started to heat-up within a few minutes...

This was a very strange behaviour because for example when using it on Wifi watching youtube also heats up the phone but not that much.

2) One of my colleagues also used his new iPhone 15 Pro Max for like 2 hours watching youtube via WIFI connection (500Mbps-1Gbps) and he experienced the same heating behaviour.

I also had iPhone 13 Pro and I still have an iPhone 14 Prox Max and I never had this heating issues :(

3) When charging is also heats up but let's say that is somehow normal ... I used an Apple original charger 20W + a USB-C to USB-C non apple cable (same cable used before to charge my 14 Pro Max without issues...)

There is definetelly something causing the phone to heat and I'm just wondering if Apple can fix this asap... we all know heating is not good for electronic devices and especially batteries...

I still remember I had a Sony Xperia at that phone was also overheating when I was using the camera outside to film and if the brightness was maximum... is logical more power for display and camere in use... due to the heating when filming in these conditions the phone was automatically turining off the camera (I was disappointed that I could not film more than 4-5 min at an airshow when was very sunny outside)

As it looks the new Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max is now presenting the same sympthomps... :(

Question(s):

This can be a bad design? maybe not tested enough for the heat disipation?

The new titanium frame is not as good for thermal disipation as aluminium and causing this issues?

Finally this can be due to the new A17 Pro chip (heating up)?

Final question is if Apple can really fix this with just a software update within the next days?

Anyway I still have at least 15-20 days to use it and if Apple does not fix this heating issue with an update then for me unfortunatelly the new iphone will go back as a return to the resealear and I'll keep my 14 Pro Max which is a "cold" phone...

Apple if you see this please address this issue and if possible fix it. Thank you!

I just switched from 14 pro 512GB (iOS 16) to 15 pro max 1TB (iOS 17.0.3) today (iPhone region : ZA) .

I have tested and usb-c charging is not an ideal scenario.

Drain battery and connect with a USB C to C Watt meter.

"None" Optimized Battery Charging used for full charging test.

From 0-50% - It goes 27W full charging. Then just reached 50.01% (just the number showing 50) it dropped to 21W and it check with battery/CPU tempeature as well. It could go as slow as 3W (Slower than Magsafe 7.5W).

Now I keep using my old good PC CPU heatsink touching the back with a little airflow (fan) as interim solution (it works, increase and maintain 10~15W charging).

It seems old good friend CPU heatsink is a safe solution for this generation iPhone.

At least not until it is fixed.

So, Report this to Apple, in the Meantime:

Do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

I also applied the update but am still having issues. Have not tried the charging yet but recording outside 4k60 I got 6 minutes before the screen was so dark it was very hard to see. The phone felt warm but not crazy hot. It was 85 degrees out and I purposely was filming in direct sunlight.

I also still feel like my battery life has sucked compared to my 14 plus. After formal use for me I am at 34 percent at 5pm. That is not something that normally happened.

I plan to take it out to the parks to try and vlog with it to see if it does better than last time now that I did the update.

Are you saying that while recording the video, your iPhone shut down and showed a Temperature symbol on the screen and you don't use the phone until it cooled down? If no, your iPhone didn't OVERHEAT. It got warm, maybe really warm, which would be normal if you were recording video for more than a few seconds, which pushed the battery in the phone hard and when you push a battery hard, it generates heat.

On the screen brightness, have you gone into Settings > Display & Brightness and turned it up to be brighter? The screen on my 15 Pro Max is no less bright than the screen was on my 14 Pro Max. I don't use True Tone and I don't have auto brightness enabled as I'm capable of determining the brightness level I want on my phone.

The new iPhone 15 Pro Max battery life is ridiculous and also the overheating and dimming of the screen this is unbelievable. They say the iPhone 15 Plus performance much better. Why do I pay 1479€? They knew this for sure that’s why they increase the size of the battery. They thought they could fix it. It’s despicable. I will return this fail of phone!

I have the same issue , I don't really play games or do heavy processing task on my 15 Pro Max but still my 15 Pro Max feel so hot near the action button and the volume button on the left side. why is this happening? They said that the overheating issue has already been solved with a software update, but it’s still happening and I don’t even use my phone for heavy processing task, but it heats up pretty much more.
