I am unable to change default timer tone on iPhone after updating to iOS 17

I can no longer change the default timer for when I say “hey siri, set timer for 15 minutes”. It plays some super quiet tone that I can’t hear while I’m working. If I want to change it to one of my own that’s 4x louder, I have to stop and set a timer manually. Which causes a problem with my job. Yeah sure it takes only like a minute, but at my job, it’s a big deal.

why did Apple remove the custom default timer tone option?? What is the possible benefit of this? Even worse, why did they set it to the quietest tone they could??

Found a workaround to this irritating problem. Apparently after you set the default timer (1 sec), press start and let the timer countdown and sound off. After that it will stick to the default sound you had set. I am on IOS 17.1

thank you! I see a reply below, that when I speak to Siri for a timer, if I say set a new timer for X minutes with Presto, that should work. I’m going to try it now.

As an aside, the latest updates are aggravating in more than one way! I swear they changed the sensitivity of finger drag for spelling words, because I am making all sorts of mistakes in my texts now that I never used to. Why did they have to mess with things that work so well? 😡

Omygosh I'm having a problem with this too! I can't hear the defaut "radial", it is so quiet, it defeats the purpose of using a timer! I've tried to set a new louder sound as a default, but doesn't seem to stick when speaking the timer command to Siri. Why oh why does Apple have to screw up functions that do work in order to release a new version with new tricks? I'm getting to where I dread ios updates now and put them off as long as possible because every time it's something else that's messed up!

Same issue, I'm helping someone who's severely handicapped and I'd set up her iPad to play podcasts and launch a sleep timer every night using only her voice with Siri, since Ipad 17 it doesn't work anymore, the timer wakes her up intead of turning off the podcasts because the sleep timer option can't be selected by default. And of course the shortcuts app doesn't allow us to decide which sound to use if we set up a timer in a shortcut. The solution a person gave here didn't work for me, labelling it didn't change anything, but I'm on 17.0.3. I hope 17.1 fixes it quickly.

Man, I used to love Apple but the idiotic decisions have been piling up lately, it used to be so smooth and smart, now literally every update I'm cringing in advance, waiting to see how much worse my experience will be this time. Can we have Steve Jobs back?

I used to be a huge apple guy too. It is never buy their computers these days because of their poor decisions. Jobs wanted macs to be more mainstream, now they are making them more locked down again. Just pushing themselves away in my opinion. Still use an iPhone though. I’m set in my ways there. Had the first iPhone and that’s all I’ve had since. I’m too lazy to try android. They seem incredibly complicated.

This is absolutely insane, I use timers every single day and I cannot stand this default timer.. PLEASE Apple fix this issue that you see so many of us complaining about, it is negatively impacting our lives! The Radar is the best sound for a timer I don’t understand why it had to be changed to something so quiet by default.. please update this quickly!

Great to read these posts. Thanks for whoever put the link for apple feedback, I have submitted the form to apple saying that I use a timer 3 times a day to use a breathing machine for my cancer but now I cant hear it go off so have to set it manually every time (so annoying and takes ages) as its dangerous to overinflate my lungs. Why have a default if you cant have access to change it and no point in having siri if you cant use her for shortcuts like setting at timer. Fingers crossed they will fix it for the next update!
