I am unable to change default timer tone on iPhone after updating to iOS 17

I can no longer change the default timer for when I say “hey siri, set timer for 15 minutes”. It plays some super quiet tone that I can’t hear while I’m working. If I want to change it to one of my own that’s 4x louder, I have to stop and set a timer manually. Which causes a problem with my job. Yeah sure it takes only like a minute, but at my job, it’s a big deal.

why did Apple remove the custom default timer tone option?? What is the possible benefit of this? Even worse, why did they set it to the quietest tone they could??

Found a workaround to this irritating problem. Apparently after you set the default timer (1 sec), press start and let the timer countdown and sound off. After that it will stick to the default sound you had set. I am on IOS 17.1

I love that: "It's not that we *don't know* how to do it, it's that we do know, but the setting doesn't take effect."

Thank you for saying that. We are so used to - no make that resigned to - talking to computers that we have accepted the blathering responses that we get. Suggestion to upper management: Have your engineers who know how to fix this do customer support on the phone one week out of every month. Telephone customer support folks on the phone understand the problems but you get the feeling that they don't have much faith that concerns like this are getting to the engineering department. Ironically, it's the failures of communication the company that keeps them employed answering complaints and inquiries.

That definitely didn’t work for me. All Siri did was to name the timer Radar.

Thinking Apple couldn’t be so annoyingly foolish, I deleted all my timers, manually created a new timer with the sound I wanted. Used it, then used Siri to set a new timer, hoping it would create the new timer with the last and only sound used. No go. Apple IS annoyingly foolish.

You mentioned alarm and “both” so I wasn’t sure if you were having an issue with the alarm rather than the timer.

I can’t imagine why it’s not working for you. The only thing that comes to mind is that something must be missing from the equation. If you’ve been through the thread then you already know that the workaround doesn’t work on iOS 17, only iOS 17.1. Other than having a different iOS version, if all the steps were followed, it doesn’t make sense to me.

Sorry, I know these little things can be very annoying. I use my timer for all kinds of things, such as making sure I don’t burn down my house by forgetting something on the stove.

Terrible update to timer default. Doesn’t make sense how it is useful to users and takes away user autonomy. Everyone has their own reasons and methods for using the timer. I want mine to stop playing so I can fall asleep with a wind down routine. The timer wakes me back up. I don’t want to have to change my preference every time II access the timer. Apple has taken away our ability to set our iPad with preferences and forces users to their preference, that doesn’t make sense. Apple, please give us back the ability to set up our phones and iPad to our personal preference.

I use Timer and its Stop Playing setting most nights as a de facto sleep setting so I can put on some sort of streaming TV or music in bed , which allows me to fall asleep and then have it turn off within about 45 minutes. Since I updated to iOS 17 last week I have woken up regularly about 2 hours into my sleep cycle with the video still on. Then I can't get back to sleep. Please fix this; I don't understand why it won't default to Stop Playing.
