How to ping iPhone from Apple Watch

Since updating to iOS 17 I cannot ping my phone using my watch. I used to be able to swipe up or down (I cannot remember) on my watch and there was a phone icon I could use to ping. Now it’s gone. 😢 HELP!

Hi AnanceRN,

It sounds like you're on watchOS 10, which has changed how Control Center is opened.

Press the side-button on your Apple Watch to open Control Center and ping your iPhone:

Hope this helps!

Hi shrinivasan18,

If your side button is broken, you can use a gesture to open Control Center and ping your iPhone. Follow these steps:

open Watch app > Accessibility > scroll down and tap AssistiveTouch > enable AssistiveTouch > tap Hand Gestures > enable Hand Gestures

You can choose which gesture should open Control Center by tapping one of the four available gestures, then choosing "Control Center". If you want to ensure you don't enable other gestures by mistake, you can set the other gestures to "None".

Quick press and release of this button (see picture)

Use Control Center on Apple Watch - Apple Support

DO NOT hold the button, as that will bring up Emergency services

If you cannot get the timing just right, you can play with the following setting:

Settings -> Accessibility -> Side Button Click Speed

I like "Slow". My Wife likes "Slowest". This is also helpful when trying to get Apple Pay to appear by doing a quick double press and release.

How can you ping from your Apple Watch to find the location of your iPhone using iOS 17?

The previous Control Center swipe-up has moved to a quick press and release of the flat oval side button

Use Control Center on Apple Watch - Apple Support

DO NOT hold the button, as that brings up Emergency services and the power off icon.

Control Center should then show you the iPhone ping icon (find my iPhone), Battery percentage, Flashlight, Water Lock, Airplane mode, Alarm silence, Theater mode, and all the other Control Center services.

An alternate way to get some of the Control Center services is:

“Hey Siri, find my iPhone”

“Hey Siri, Flashlight”

“Hey Siri, Battery”

“Hey Siri, Airplane mode”

Getting the press and release timing just right can be an issue. You can make it more reliable by changing:

Settings -> Accessibility -> Side Button Click Speed

“Side Button Click Speed” can adjust the press and release timing, so you get the Control Center display every time. Adjusting The “Side Button Click Speed” is also useful for Apple Pay’s double press and release. There is “Default” (sub second timing of needed), “Slow” (up to a second between press and release), and “Slowest” (up to 2 seconds between press and release). I like the “Slow” setting.

NOTE: Slow and Slowest settings do not mean you have to wait a full second or 2 seconds between press and release. It just means you do not need to be super fast.

Apple Watch -> Settings -> Accessibility -> AssistiveTouch can be used to access things like:

o Control Center

o Apple Pay

o Emergency Services and the Power Off icon (labeled “Hold Side Button”)

o and many other things...

the side button on my watch is not working for a while now is there any other way to access the ping button other than the side button?

thanks in advance

That is the new way to access the control center.

You could explore if a Siri a Shortcut will activate the control center.

I have just spent over 30 minutes on the phone to Apple call centre and they have no idea about this! Thank you for your assistance. So I have pressed the side button, gone into the control centre but can't see how to ping the phone?

You tap the button that shows a phone with what looks like parentheses on either side. See here for a picture:
