IPhone 15 Pro Max keyboard not registering clicks and some keys are not sensitive

Anyone experiencing insensitive keys on the keyboard? Some keys near the edge of my phone that are noticeably less sensitive and irresponsive than the rest (with and without a screen protector). I have to click pretty hard multiple times in order for the keys to register. The keys that are having issues registering my clicks are Backspace and "P". I tested the demo phones in the store and they all seem normal and much more sensitive.

I had the same exact issue. Just updated to IOS 17.1, which, according to Apple:

Fixes an issue that may cause the keyboard to be less responsive

And it does! Issue resolved. My backspace, “L” key and “M” key are functioning again!

Hope it works for y'all as well.

No way! I don't know whether to laugh or what but when I removed my Apple Silicone Case, the accuracy of the keyboard is increased drastically and the keys are working normally (no need to hard tap on m, n, l or backspace buttons). I cannot believe it but thanks for posting this. Maybe Apple wants us to carry our 15PMs case free.

In my case at least I can now confirm after extensive testing that my 15 PM works perfectly fine without the mag case - super fast and responsive but as soon as any mag case is on (Apple or third party) the keyboard issues are there instantly (M and backspace especially). No updates solved this so it might be a hardware issue (something to do with magnets). Again, this is what’s happening in my case.

I have done all of the above a long time ago. Of course this doesn’t help at all as it’s a hardware problem, unrelated to keyboard.

I suggest to try tapping on the screen within the free Touch Screen Check app, tapping in the most insensitive areas with the tip of your finger and you will be always able to reproduce the problem. Using the mentioned app, tap approximately in the area where you experiece the screen to be unresponsive. On my 15 PM this is the area where O, P, K, L, N, M, Backspace, Space and Return keys are located.

I returned the phone and I’m waiting for a replacement.

Of course I have tried every single potential solution to the problem, including hard resetting the phone, disabling predictive text, disabling haptic and sound feedback, resetting dictionaries etc. I’m also regularly updating the system as soon as new version is available, currently running the latest, 17.3.1.

But you see, common sense is telling me that none of these solutions can’t work, as only a lower right portion of the screen has reduced sensitivity to touch/missing touch events and this insensitivity is absolutely not connected to the keyboard but rather to the touchscreen itself; it’s only most noticable when typing. So how could this be solved by e.g. resetting dictionaries? If typing across all the keys was lagging, sure, a software problem could be the reason, such as fetching words from dictionary being too slow to keep up with typing or similar. Or in case that entire touch screen was frozen (which it was for some users when iOS 17 came out), a hard reset did make sense and in fact indeed solved the problem. But we are dealing with entirely different issue here — it’s more than obviously a hardware problem affecting some devices.

If anyone is still having this keyboard issue, I just fixed it on my mums phone because it was driving me crazy!

I had to turn ‘Tap Assistance’ off.

Its in

settings

accessibility

touch

touch accommodations

then down the bottom tap assistance

hers was set to ‘use initial touch location’ and I just switched it to off and now her keyboard works as fast as my phone.

I hope this helps!

The first time I encountered this keyboard registering edge click issue, the Apple support representative was incredibly patient. We conducted numerous in-depth checks, and she suggested that I visit an Apple store for further assistance. I agreed and ended the support chat after an hour.

Upon visiting the Apple store, the staff quickly examined the issue within five minutes and recommended that I wait for the next software release to see if it would resolve the problem. Unfortunately, after four months, there has been no improvement with the edge keyboard.

Feeling determined, I decided to contact Apple support once again tonight.

During my conversation with David, the support representative, his demeanor seemed to fluctuate between being polite and somewhat impolite. He performed a superficial check and proposed that I visit an Apple store for further troubleshooting. This frustrated me, and I firmly declined his suggestion.

I expressed my dissatisfaction by stating that I had purchased a defective device and requested a replacement. To my relief, David agreed and scheduled an appointment for me to exchange my device.

However, when David asked about my location, I mentioned that I lived in Geneva. Surprisingly, he provided me with the address of an Apple store located in the French countryside, which was impractical for me to travel to. When I explained the difficulty of reaching that location, he asked if Geneva was the town in Switzerland.

Today, I experienced two shocks—one regarding the quality of the iPhone and the other regarding the quality of the Apple support agent. I had never doubted Apple until this incident, and I am disappointed by the whole experience.

Thank you, Apple, for making me question my trust in your products and services.

Hello everyone,

I’ve experienced the exact same problem, I had to press harder or several times on keys especially the backspace and L. I found a video in which they suggested to turn off a couple keyboard settings and it seems to have done the trick for me, the keyboard works perfectly fine now on my 15pro max so I thought I’d share!

  • First reset all keyboard settings
  • They suggested to reduce transparency and motion in display settings but I don’t think that’s related. I kept the motion activated
  • Deactivate “enable dictation”
  • Deactivate “slide to type”
  • Deactivate haptic feedback in the sounds & haptics settings
  • Turn off phone and on again

I don’t know how but it worked for me, now I know it’s a lot of cool features to deactivate :( but having a functional keyboard was more important to me. Maybe it’ll still work by reactivating some of them, maybe it’s just linked to the haptic feedbacks, who knows.

Hopefully it’ll help you guys

Just got my iPhone 15 Pro Max yesterday (Oct. 20th) and I'm also experiencing very similar keyboard issues. The backspace button and letter/buttons in general on the far right side typically require my thumb to try multiple taps for it to trigger. The backspace button is THE WORST at triggering. I've compared it side by side with my iPhone 12 Pro that I'm replacing and the comparison is night and day. The 12 Pro is SO MUCH MORE responsive. This HAS to be a display calibration issue on Apple's side (my suspicion). It isn't calibrated to trigger when only a small amount of the finger's surface area touches the display to prevent accidental touches. The backspace button on the bottom right which affords you to touch with the small tip/edge of your thumb. When you tap directly on backspace with the full pad of your index finger, the backspace button works as intended. This is a huge problem imo from Apple's display calibration side.

THIS WORKS - stop trying other methods.

  1. Go to Settings>General>Transfer or Reset Phone
  2. Tap Reset
  3. Tap Reset All Settings

Once you reset all settings, you’ll have to go back and change a bunch of settings (contact lists display - first, last. Or last, first, setting up Face ID, adding your card to Apple Pay, etc.) but it doesn’t erase any of your data. Immediate fix for this aggravating keyboard issue and in my opinion, well worth it.
