iPhone Keyboard Lag after iOS 17 Update

Hi!

After the iOS 17 update the keyboard typing experience is very unpleasant. I noticed the autocorrect feature is improved and available in many languages, but the keyboard has a major lag. After a sentence or two, the keys are not popping up, the prediction freezes and the text doesn't show up, even though I'm still typing. Few seconds later all the words I've been typing started to appear very fast and catch up again with my writing. I have already cleared the keyboard cache and restart the phone several times. iOS is up to date (17.0.2).

This is only one thing that's worst, there are many other aspect about the UI, but the keyboard one is the most upsetting.

I'm on iOS 17.1.2 and the issue persists

I've already tried reseting the keyboard dictionary, removing my secondary keyboard and since that didn't work, I even re installed IOS

The only thing that fixes the issue, as other persons have pointed out, is disabling predictive text and autocorrection

For me, autocorrection and predictive text is indispensable, so I installed google keyboard. It looks awful, but the typing experience is so much better

It is sad that a third party keyboard does it better than the apple one

I'm having this issue on an iphone 14 pro max running IOS 17.1.2 and the issue has been present since the first iOS 17 update

Same here. 17.0.3. iPhone 12 Max Pro.

I've reseted the keyboard settings, removed all the languages, kept only my native one, disabled predictive and that setting to swipe to write, basically i'm using a keyboard from 2002. Still there are moments when it's laggy.

I just gave up, I'm on a Gboard right now, working flawless, even tho, this keyboard hasn't seen any update in more than a year on App Store.

It's unbelievable for me that Gboard and SwiftKey are working perfectly on iOS, with tons of features, and the internal keyboard it's just rubbish. If I was a manager on the keyboard dept on Apple, I would have just deleted the whole project and start from scratch. It's all bad.

Hi IVVladimir,

Thanks for posting. As we understand it, you're running into some iPhone performance issues specific to the keyboard. We'd like to help out.

To clarify one point, when you say you cleared the keyboard cache, are you referring to the "Reset Keyboard Settings" function?

Also, so we can narrow this down, are you finding this happens in a specific app, or all apps? If you haven't yet, you could test a few different apps like Messages, Mail, Notes or Pages.

If all apps are affected, this link has good general steps that could help If your iPhone or iPad is running slow.

Cheers.

To say it simply I liked old keyboard in iOS 16 better but your problem I’ve not ‘had’yet’? ( I have updated to iOS 17.0.3 get that )But when you say you restart I ph is it just power off? I solve many problems with this way you may know about it- do this fast, punch in vol up then punch in vol down then hold in power off until you see the apple logo come on then let go wait for I ph prompt swipe up and put in pass code. This may work. If mistake is made just redo it. This hack has solved many of my issues. I do it a few times a day even though no problem is currently bothering me. I also use airplane mode a lot to also refresh ph every day. It’s like I ph hygiene!

Sometimes, your current keyboard setting may cause an issue. That's why you should try resetting your keyboard dictionary. You will lose all words which are saved to your keyboard.

Go to setting >>> General >>> Click on Transfer or Reset iPhone >>> Click Reset >>> Click on Reset keyboard dictionary. Now enter your passcode and tap reset dictionary.

Second, the Reduce motion feature can optimize your performance. So, you can enable the Reduce Motion feature on your iPhone. Go to your iPhone Settings >>> Click on Accessibility >>> Tap Motion >>> Turn on Reduce Motion.

If nothing works, you should upgrade the iOS version or force restart your iPhone.

This doesn't fix it, appears right after again and you loose your saved words e.g. (tested)

it also happens with out of the box new iPhones which indicates it's a bug apple has to address systemwide. A simple reset doesn't do the trick. Since the "lag" is sometimes random – it can appear like it solves it, but it will soon start lagging again.

Since turning off predictive text and check spelling I find that the experience is much better on many fronts. No distractions while typing and it still seems to catch spelling errors and auto corrects them. While the 7.1.2 update didn’t help with the lagginess with these settings enable (was it meant to?) I’m happy with these settings permanently.

Nothing will work sadly, not even buying a new phone as I've seen a lot of people reporting this even on the latest gen iPhones. Personally, I've tried every suggestion here on this thread and some other things I've found online but nothing worked, not even hard resetting the phone. The only suggestion I can give you is use a 3rd party keyboard (SwiftKey and GBoard are good picks) and hope this gets fixed in iOS 18.
