USB C on iPhone 15 not working

I bought my iPhone 15 a couple of weeks ago, I am able to use the genuine apple charger to charge my phone, but when I stay over at my bf s house and use his third party usb c charging chords it doesn’t work. I tried like 3 third party chords and nothing worked. I updated to the newest iOS, I also turned my phone off, factory reset, nothing worked. It feels like my phone is the only one with this problem—am I doomed to be stuck with genuine iPhone chargers ?? Anyway to fix this issue?

If your iPhone charges correctly with the original Apple adaptor and charging cable there is no fault in the iPhone. The problem you describe is likely to be defective or cheap uncertified cables and no-name power adaptors which do not comply with the recognised standards. There is a lot of counterfeit and non-compliant junk out there which looks good and is cheap, but it is not all it pretends to be. Some of it just won't work, other may even be dangerous if it connects to mains power.

I am pretty sure you will find your iPhone will charge if you try accessories from well known and reputable third parties. My list is not exclusive, but you have a good chance with products from suppliers like Mopie or Belkin, and anything branded by well known phone manufacturers who are using USB-C.

It is very unlikely that 2 different devices would have developed a similar fault at the same time. Having 2 devices both showing the same issue tends to point at areas which are common to both failures. You have tried several different cables so the cable is an unlikely suspect. I suggest testing with a different USB-C charger (power brick).

Your iPhone 15 is still in warranty cover, so this is probably a good place to start tracing the problem. If you can't make progress and get it working again, contact Apple Support.

My 15 Pro would charge with some third-party USB-C cables, and not with others. VERY ODDLY, I bought a package of 3 supposedly identical cables a while ago, and of these 3, 1 would work, the other 2 would not.

In my case, force re-starting my phone multiple times did not fix the non-charging problem.

My third-party charging adapters (5v, 3A type) don't appear to be the cause. If a cable works, it works with all adapters. Conversely, if a cable doesn't work, it doesn't work with any adapter.

Magsafe wireless charging pad would also work regardless of cables, as expected I guess. Found out about the cable charging problem on the first day of trip to Europe and fortunately was able to find a third party charging pad there. Will make sure to bring a charging pad as backup from now on.

Same thing here. Official Apple usb-c works fine, third party ones do not, or work intermittently. I’m unable to use 5W charge overnight, because sometimes it will stop at 50-55%. Some cables won’t work at all (I’ve tried good quality ones, like samsung or xiaomi but no sign of life at all). Seems like the problem is with usb-c to usb-a cables.

Isn’t usb-c supposed to work with EVERY cable, like other phones do?

Looks like the old days with MFI

The flip of this, is the reason Apple have had to move to USB-C is because a legal directive as part of the single charger reform (aimed at reducing waste and costs) for all small electronic devices to be comparable with USB-C charging ports by Dec 2024. The European Commissioner has already written to Apple, before the iPhone 15 came out, telling them that if they restrict the functionality with 3rd party cables they will look to ban new Apple devices from sale after this December deadline.

So with that in mind, if the cables work for other devices - they should be working with Apple too.

HOWEVER, the current place I’m at with Apple is that it appears that the “Power Delivery” Functionality seems to be troublesome and is giving some users over USB-C to USB-C issues with none charging. There’s a handshake process over the cable between a PD capable power source and the iPhone - and the iPhone isn’t always confirming this handshake properly and is stopping the charging process. (Software support are blaming Hardware, and I’ve had a new inner system - yet is still having the same issue. And now Hardware support are blaming Software and no one knows how to fix it)

Just sharing my experience in case it helps. With my iPhone 15 Pro, some third-party cables work for USB-C charging, and some don't. VERY ODDLY, I bought a package of 3 cables from a third-party company, and of these 3 supposedly identical cables, 1 works for charging, and two don't!

I tested the cables above using various charging adapters (all 5v, 3A capable), and found the same results. In my case, the adapters don't appear to be the cause of this charging problem.

With wireless Magsafe charging, all third-party USB-C cables work (of course, I guess).

I found out the cable problem during my travel to Europe and thankfully was able to buy a charging pad. From now on when traveling abroad I will bring a wireless charging pad for backup.

So the charging issues that apple fixed was for third party chargers and since I had only apple chargers I didn’t think to try 3rd party chargers. I just bought an Anker charger which has both USB-A and USB-C ports and using the USB-C port works. So third party chargers work but not apple chargers? The Anker was a set and both chargers work just fine on both my iPad and my iPhone.

I encourage everyone to report this on the phone or chat to Apple Support.

I got a call back this week, to be told there’s nothing wrong with the software or phone it’s definitely the issue of the USB-C outlet I’m plugging it into. And there’s nothing they are willing to do because no one else is having this issue.

When I asked for them to go back to the engineers and asked them to explain why it’s the same for all USB-C outlets that it doesn’t work with and if I use a USB-A socket from the same source it’s absolutely fine? They couldn’t answer when I got a call back the next day, but insisted it could only be the outlet and the phone is not a problem. Solely on the basis if I get an Apple power brick it charges fine.

(NB. When I forwarded them a link/mentioned this Support Thread, Apple said to me “yes, the engineers have come back and said they don’t look at the forums” - which seems insane?!)
