This message can appear for two reasons:

  • Your camera has been replaced by an unauthorized source.
  • Your camera has failed in a way that your iPhone cannot verify that it is genuine.

If your camera was replaced and you are seeing that message, go back to where it was replaced and tell them to do it right.

If your camera was not replaced, you should have your iPhone examined. See iPhone Repair & Service - Apple Support

The message that you see will appear if diagnostics on the phone detects a potential problem with the camera, even if the camera is original. It might also be a false alarm.

Make an appointment at the Apple Store or take the phone to an authorized Apple service shop to let them run some checks and tests on the phone.

You can find a list of authorized service shops in your area using the link just below:

Update: My phone is a 15 Pro, only 8 months old. Still looks perfect condition, not dropped, didn’t change settings and one day the camera app said it wasn’t genuine and stopped working properly. Tried old backups, factory resetting… nothing. So I took it to the Apple Store, told them the issue and they didn’t even blink an eye. They knew exactly what the problem was without me explaining further. So clearly they have dealt with this issue quite regularly which tells me this is an Apple problem… not a user issue. They fixed the camera within two hours and it works perfectly. However… if you don’t have your phone under warranty… the cost to fix it is $200. Apple needs to address this issue instead of making free money off of their consumers.

I understand you're seeing a notification about your iPhone camera not being a genuine part. It's concerning, especially since your phone is less than a year old and worked fine until the camera freeze yesterday. While a restart fixed it temporarily, the notification remains even after updating to iOS 17.

There are a few troubleshooting steps we can try. Restarting your phone again and force closing the Camera app might clear up any software glitches. However, considering the notification appeared after the freeze, a hardware issue is also a possibility. To get the most accurate diagnosis and solution, it's best to contact Apple Support. They can offer specific troubleshooting steps for your iPhone model and potentially replace the camera module if it's a hardware fault (likely covered under warranty). You can reach Apple Support through their website or schedule an appointment at an Apple Store. By working with Apple, you should be able to resolve the camera notification and get your iPhone's camera app back to normal.

This just happened to me today out of nowhere. Phone has been restarted several times and when I open up the camera it is stuck on 2x for photo. Same message as everyone else that the camera isn’t recognized. iPhone 13 Pro. No damage or anything. What’s the resolution here? Taking time out to wait at an Apple Store or repair place or even pay out of pocket isn’t something anyone should have to do. Anyone?

If your car had a problem with the brakes, would you say that you shouldn't have to take it to the repair shop?

If you are getting that message and you haven't had anything replaced, it can mean there is a hardware problem with your phone. If your phone is no longer under warranty, you are responsible for any cost to repair.

Very often, the diagnostics can be done remotely.

They knew exactly what the problem was because they know what they are doing and have seen that error messages (and all the others) more times than you can imagine.

They are not making "free money" off of their customers. They are repairing/replacing a part that failed. It's covered by warranty but if you don't have a warranty, you pay out of pocket. Parts fail. Apple can't change entropy. And they are more likely to fail the older a device gets. That's why the free warranty only lasts a year.

My iPhone 13 Pro Max is doing the exact same thing. My camera won’t work nor my video. I can use portrait mode and cinematic video but not regular. Says I do not have a genuine apple camera installed which is not true. Never have I had to have anything fixed or replaced. What’s the fix?

If you haven't had any repairs done on your phone, it most likely means that a part has failed. Start here:

We use iPhones with In-House apps to support our production, and one of the 12 Pro's produces the same behavior. It was shut down for a night, and after turning it back on in the morning this alert came.
The device never has been opened or repaired. The camera works partially, but it does not support all three cameras.
Could someone tell, why it happened after the restart?
It seems like a software issue for me.
The device is having the latest iOS Version - 17.5.1.

That warning can also mean that the camera hardware has failed for some reason. That can happen at any time. Contact Apple for further assistance:

Yes I would understand that if the phone is a year or 2 old. This is brand new out of the box with this issue.

If the phone is a month old, it's beyond the return period and no longer "new". If the phone is only a month old, and there is no user damage, it would be covered under warranty. So, either you didn't understand what Apple meant when they told you there would be a fee. Or, there is more gong on here than you are reporting. I'd suggest you contact them again.

You should stand behind your quality for a new item and exchange it.

Why should I stand behind it? Neither I nor anyone else participating in this forum has anything to do with it. We're just fellow users.
