Let’s define “overheating”. If an iPhone overheats it shuts down so it can’t be used, and displays a message saying it must cool down before it can be turned on, and it will probably be unusable for an hour or so. If you are seeing this it is a hardware problem and you should contact Apple support:

Note that both of the above have options to receive a callback or chat

If you are not seeing this your phone has not overheated. However, if you fast charge your phone may pause charging at 80% and display a message saying that charging has paused, and will resume when the phone cools down. This is NOT overheating, and is normal when fast charging. It also won’t prevent you from using any app you have on your phone.

Also, some apps that use a lot of energy or that use cellular data rather than Wi-Fi can cause the phone to run warmer.

I switched from iPhone 12 pro to 15 pro. Noticed the heat issue right away. Did not return the phone as Apple was working on a fix. When 17.0.3 came out I upgraded but that did NOT fix the issue. I called support and they ran a diagnosis and could not find out anything. I was told to go to Genius Bar, so I booked a time and went there. They could not help either. Here is what I was told:

  1. Sign up to iCloud
  2. Back up all your data on iCloud ( Doing it iPhone to iPhone or iPhone to Mac does NOT work)
  3. Then use this link to wipe out your iPhone: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
  4. The Wiping out has to be done from Mac (doing it on iPhone does NOT work)
  5. Then try to restore it from iCloud

This is the most ridiculous workaround, here is why:

First, you have to sign up for iCloud and pay them. Then you have to waste 2-3 days of your time to wait and hope everything is backed up. Then I tried to restore it, which even the technician said not everything would come over.

I have not done this and I do not have time to do all this. But I could not return my phone either as I waited for Apple to release a "fix".

The reason for this BUG is that some of their app are having issues with older "Settings" saved by the older iPhone. So instead of fixing this bug, Apple has been asking people to do the above since the upgrade from iPhone 13 was released.

I hope Apple will read this note and take responsibility and fix this bug!!!

I still do NOT know if the above does work.

If anyone has the time and the courage to do all that please post here to see if that actually worked.

Also while using camera for 15 minutes phone is heating. Battery gets down rapidly.
Is apple is going to do anything for this?
I am using original apple adpater as well as cable came with phone.

It’s called the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Anything that creates or uses energy does so with some loss. That lost energy is expressed as heat. So when you charge the phone it generates heat in the power source, heat in the charger circuit in the phone, and heat as the energy goes into the battery. The faster the charging, the more heat is generated; fast charging generates a lot of heat. Likewise when you discharge the battery; not all of the energy from the battery gets to the circuits that use it. Some of it becomes heat. The camera CDS sensor needs a lot of energy, and they generates a lot of heat. So do video apps and interactive games.

Yes, ALL smartphones (actually, all devices that have rechargeable batteries) will get warm when charging, and fast charging will get warmer than slower charging. Physics Rules! I purchased my iPhone 15 Pro Max a few months ago, and since day one, it has been heating up. Now, it gets excessively hot while charging or during calls, making it difficult to hold or use the device. Could you please advise on the necessary steps to address this issue?

Contact Apple Support and arrange to have them evaluate the phone:

I just bought an iPhone 15 Pro, and it gets hot!!!! All the time in normal use! I wouldn't have bought this if I'd known about this problem!! I spent about $1500 total!! Not happy!

If you bought it from Apple within the last 14 days, you can return it and get your money back. You can then buy something that makes you happier. If it has been more than 14 day, I suggest you contact Apple directly for warranty assistance.

Already been updated to iOS 17.0.3 but the overheating issue is still there when charging.

Tried without the magnetic cooler today to charge and banged, the “Charging On Hold. Charging will resume when iPhone returns to normal temperature”, notification and stopped charging. Only able to charge from 26% to 41% power that took less than an hour or lesser. Then attach the magnetic cooler and continue to charge without the notification appearing again with success.

Hope they get it fixed quickly (submitted Feedback).

I have had my phone since pre order date and no issues. I think most people don’t any game or videos I watch on my phone or ipad it does get hot as it is using more power to function with the apps. I’ve taken photos and even videos as i’m a photographer and make youtube videos and no issues since the fix nor before the fix. I also have my locations turned off, most notifications turned off, brightness turned down, always on display turned off which saves battery. Even if my phone is on for a good solid 20+ mins before the screen goes dark no over heating as everyone is saying. Go check your storage, your battery health section to see what apps is using the most battery. I make sure open apps are closed to also save battery. Every phone gets hot as we use the device. I charged my phone today for a good couple hours and still no over heating with the battery.
