Let’s define “overheating”. If an iPhone overheats it shuts down so it can’t be used, and displays a message saying it must cool down before it can be turned on, and it will probably be unusable for an hour or so. If you are seeing this it is a hardware problem and you should contact Apple support:

Note that both of the above have options to receive a callback or chat

If you are not seeing this your phone has not overheated. However, if you fast charge your phone may pause charging at 80% and display a message saying that charging has paused, and will resume when the phone cools down. This is NOT overheating, and is normal when fast charging. It also won’t prevent you from using any app you have on your phone.

Also, some apps that use a lot of energy or that use cellular data rather than Wi-Fi can cause the phone to run warmer.

Overheating iPhone with iOS17 Installed:

What you are reporting is a well-known issue. Apple is working on it. Keep your iPhone updated as more update come about.

Report this to Apple:

Do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of this, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread.
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

hi, i think few apps are not yet compatible with ios 17 or Iphone 15

i have bought 15 pro max and updated it to 17.1.1. sometimes it gets hot when charging, i tried everything, turn down the brightness, turn on the airplane mode while charging, turn off bluetooth and wifi, turn off the app background refresh... the 15 pro max still gets hot when charging.

then i check every app i installed after i bought the phone and uninstalled almost all of them, it seems that method solving the problem for me, my iphone 15 pro max is now normal and didn't get hot when charging.

Went to the Apple Genius Bar and got my iPhone 15 pro checked. The IT staff said that if u updated from 60Hz phones to iPhone 15pro or pro max and had transferred everything directly from the old phone to the new phone , some apps and data couldn’t run well on 120Hz phones and that caused over processing and overheating. Try upload everything on clouds and erase the phone. I did that and now my phone is not acting crazy no more. No more overheating, no more battery draining so fast.

What people forget is that almost every time apple releases an update, all the app developers update their apps to take advantage of some of the new features apple puts in.

apple then has to pay attention to which application(s) cause the heating issue, and then figure out what those apps are doing.

looking at battery usage when the phone is overheating will probably show the app(s) causing the issue, and closing (and leaving them closed for a while) will probably cool down their phone.

I went to the Apple Store and talked with employees. They said it is normal for the iPhone 15 Pro and Max to run hotter because of the titanium. As long as you don’t get warning messages displaying on your phone, then it is operating within its normal range. So I would say, unless you are getting warning messages, do not worry about the warmth!

No, I would try it. Coming from the same issues here. I bought a 15 pro… never heated up, so got a good one and shockingly just as good battery life as my 14 pro max. Then I wanted a bigger one cause it is kinda small, so I found a max 512gb available in my area and it was their last one. It made me do the 17.0.03 update before I could even use it. Picked it up and it heated up very quickly.. then next day using it and then let it sit. It went down from 95% to 90 in ten minutes and then put it down and after 5 minutes it went to 87%. This has an issue internally somewhere, So I was like nope taking it back and returned it.

I found a 256gb available the next day… picked it up and asked the gentleman who worked there about the issues and he said “50% I see have good luck with no issue and then the other 50% just like you did on your first one”…. So now I’m on my second one, no heating Just like the 15 pro, i tested it just to see and didn’t charge it from starting it up on Saturday at 1pm @ 87% battery and the thing lasted til yesterday evening 9:30pm at 6% left and heavy use both days and no heating up. (I went to bed Saturday night at 63% and woke up with 61%) so it’s solid so far and not returning anything yet cause I feel now this one is one of the “good ones” so it’s an internal

issue somewhere. You can return it to a store with in 14 days, if you have the issue with heating, then go and see if they can exchange, but if they don’t. You can find a store with in your zip code and they will show what’s available in the area. I know it’s a little inconvenient but, it worked for me so Thought I would share.

Troubleshooting an Overheating iPhone:

Perform the following:

I. Cool Down the iPhone:

For a few hours, perform the following...

  • Power Off: the iPhone for a bit
  • Unplug: any Cables
  • Place it Atop: Laptop Cooler
  • Keep it in: an open space
  • Keep it Out of: direct sunlight

then...

2. Clear Space Using my User Tips:

See if you need to clear lots of space. System resources may be using up too much services, making it overheat. Internal storage cannot be upgraded. It is what it is. So, the maximum internal storage capacity never increases, even if you upgraded your iCloud plan. Learn More here: What's the Difference Between Device Storage and iCloud Storage? Apple Support

So, what to do...

Clear Space, Using my User Tips:

Try looking at:

Settings -> Battery

And scroll down to “Battery Usage by app”

look at the top 2-3, and force close them.

Do not reopen those apps for 10-15 minutes!!!!!!

Wait to see if your phone starts cooling down. If your phone does cool down, it is probably a problem with one of those apps. (Maybe the way it is doing something that affects iOS too)

just an idea to help track down the problem, because heat has to come from using electricity..
