“No Voicemail” after iOS 17 Update

Hello. I have an iPhone 14 Pro. I updated to iOS 17 when it became available. I have since updated to 17.0.2. I had visual voicemail in my phone when it originally updated. Once updated, I would go to voicemail and it said “No Voicemail”. If I restart my phone, my old voicemails will reappear and sometimes I then have new voicemails. But, they then disappear again and I have to restart. But I’m missing new voicemails because of this issue and can’t respond to old ones that I’ve left in my visual voicemail. Sometimes the red notification dot shows on the voicemail button in the phone app but it’s a red dot with no number in it and when I go to voicemail, it says “No Voicemail”. This has been very disruptive. Any help on a permanent fix would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same thing right after the 17 upgrade. I turned off live voicemail, restarted and soft reset the phone. Still nothing. Called AT&T and the guy did some type of reset settings but he wasn't really sure that made a difference. Then we called the phone from another line and left a message. Boom, all the old ones from years ago showed up.

ATT doesn't have the messages older than 30 days. They are only saved on the phone. It's like they were still there on the phone but not showing. Probably turning off live voicemail, reset/restart, then leaving a message did it. Not sure if anything the ATT guy did helped, he said he just reset some settings to default, not sure what that really meant.

I understand your frustration. But let me see if I can provide some help. First off, understand that voicemail is a carrier feature and the voicemail exists on their server. Even when you get your voicemail, it does not download a file to your phone. You need to ensure that you make a total backup before you ever do an iOS update. That is just a common thing to do when it comes to software. There is no guarantee that the voicemail will still exist on the carrier's server if you attempt to get it again. If the voicemail disappears from the phone, then with a backup, you should be able to restore to that backup and recover the voicemail.

The next thing to do with voicemail you wish to save for posterity, is to save it to files. You can do this by opening the voicemail, then tap on the square with the upward arrow on it. Scroll down and you will see Save to Files as a choice. Tap on that and you will be taken to the Files app and you have the ability to name the file, using something that will remind you what the file is. It will save it as a voice memo. After you have named it, tap on Save in the upper right corner, then close the Voicemail page. Then you can go to the Files app on the phone and you will find the file there. You can open it and listen to it as you wish.

I hope this helps you in the future, but if you did not create a backup and your carrier says they no longer have the voicemail on their server, then there is no way to recover old ones.

IS apple planning on doing anything about this? I am utterly devastated that all my voicemails from the last 5 years are lost!! Like so many of you, when I updated to IOS 7.4 they disappeared. I was saving voicemails from both my parents who are gone now!! This is terrible. Nothing that is suggested here has worked. PLEASE help -- apple please fix this!!! if you are on this thread and your emailed returned please tell me how you did it. I have tried everything. Is apple planning on doing anything to help??

You would have to ask Apple, by clicking on the Support link at the top or bottom of this page. You posted in a user-to-user forum with minimal Apple participation.

And did you log in to your carrier’s email server to see if they still have the messages? If they are on then carrier’s server then it is just a syncing problem, that should be resolvable.

I did this. I also called into my voicemail by calling my own phone number which I guess I somehow never thought of-put in passcode and some of my savedvoicemails were there fortunately two of them from my dad, but a few other sentimental ones were gone, and I’m assuming based on the earlier post, there’s no way to get them. I’ve never backed up voicemail to a file in the history of owning a cell phone.

I have 13 mini and same issues exactly. Red dot no number. Sometimes the voicemails are there sometimes not. Doesn’t always require a hard reset or restart. Sometimes I look and they aren’t there and I’ll go back in a few minutes and they are. I’ve been missing calls for awhile but Genius Bar says my phone is perfectly fine. So frustrating.
