Read Receipts still sending on Mac even after turned off in settings

When I send iMessages from my Mac my contacts still get read receipts from me even though I have it turned off in (Message Preferences > iMessage > Send Read Receipts).

I checked each individual conversation and the "send read receipts" are indeed checked for all of them. I restarted my computer and even though I turned off read receipts in the overall message settings, it's still checked for every conversation. I do not want to manually un-check it for each individual conversation. Why does turning off read receipts in the general message preference not turn it off for all conversations?

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

I can't be sure & no idea which OS you're on, but it sounds like this file might be corrupted...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Containers/com.apple.soagent/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.messageshelper.AlertsController.plist

Yep in the new account contacts only get read receipts if I have the general setting turned on (regardless of what individual conversations are set to). Unlike in my main account where when the general setting is set to "not sending read receipts", contacts still get them :(
