iPhone 15 Pro Max black screen

My phone has gone black while charging the last two nights. It will ring, sounds can be heard but the screen will not wake up. Had to press/release the volume up & down button then the on button to turn it back on. The phone works fine all during the day. What’s causing this?!?

Happening to me too! I just got my 15 pro max phone a little over a week ago. I’m on vacation in New Orleans…woke up this morning after using my apple mag safe charger overnight to a black screen!! Woke up my husband after trying everything to figure it out. His 15 (not pro max) was on his Apple MagSafe charger all night and his is fine! We could feel the vibrations on my phone so knew it was on but the screen was pitch black. I ended up doing a reset using the volume up, down and holding power button til it reset and came back on. When is this being fixed?? When we get back home, do I need to go to an Apple Store and exchange this phone now?! Ugghhh. So frustrating.

I urge you (and others with this issue) to contact Apple Support directly.

Why? I have had an iPhone 15 Pro Max since launch and so have millions of others who have never had this issue, even once, following the same procedures as you.

That means there is something unique to your device (and those of others seeing this issue repeatedly) - configuration, carrier, date of manufacture, etc. - that I don't have the data to see but Apple does.

Contacting them will allow them to collate data and also replace your device if needed.

Hey lachaunia,

Determining the why behind this occurring will likely be difficult over the community form, but if you've isolated it to occurring during wireless charging in the evening, that's a good start. Does the same issue occur if you try charging throughout the day as well, or does it only occur at night? If the issue occurs in both instances, having your iPhone inspected wouldn't be a bad idea, as you'll likely get a better idea of the potential causes. This is a great place to review Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options.

Take care.

Hello everyone who have been affected by this defect in our new IPhone 15s. Several of you stated it happened when your phones were on the MagCharger. When I started this post, I shared that it occurred for me two nights in a row while on a generic wireless charger. So, I decided to try the 80% max charge setting in our setting, battery, (turn the toggle on) and charge the phone only with the MagCharger. This has worked so far. I would charge the phone before going to bed and take it off once it’s at 80%. I charge it during the day as I stream music and podcasts while at work. The MagCharger hasn’t been the problem for me. In my unprofessional IT experience, I think the problem is the phone shouldn’t be charging to 💯 so the phone shuts the screen off. It is a major rude inconvenience. I agree with everyone that Apple needs to do an update and someone somewhere an IT tech needs to have an explanation for the millions who have now purchased the phone.

I suggest trying what I did and see if that works. Keep in mind that we have an 1 year warranty on the phone and if the issue continues we can take it back to the maker, Apple and not the service provider.

Share if it works or not for you.

My iphone15 plus screen i bought last month just blacks out for no reason. I can hear through headphones that its still on and functioning but no amount of pressing buttons or volume controls brings it back. I charge mine via a cable.

If I wait until the battery is completely dead and then recharge it the screen comes back after 5 minutes. I cannot risk pressing side buttons or trying to shut it down without a screen as i fear its too easy to trigger the emergency call sequence.

My problem is that my train tickets were in the Apple wallet which i couldnt show so i ended up paying another £215 to GWR !!! Had this been my flight tickets it would have cost an irrecoverable £2,000 so i because of this phones fault its no longer possibe to use or trust apple wallet !!!

Hi lachaunia,

We appreciate those details and we recommend making sure you have the very latest version of iOS installed. Here's how to update if needed: Update your iPhone or iPad.

"Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

  1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
  5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do."

If the issue persists after updating, we recommend contacting Apple Support for further assistance here: Get Support. They can run a diagnostic to help rule out any hardware issues.

Take care.

I’ve had the same problem this year with my iPhone 15 Pro Max as I did last year with my new 14 Pro Max. It is not the problem with the charger or a defective phone. The problem is the rise and wake function! Until there is a software update for it. I was advised to turn that feature off in settings . Here is a link to be able to report your black screen. The exact same thing has happened to my iPhone 15 Pro Max. After picking up the phone from its 12 South stand charge ( sold by Apple now), the screen remains black, but seems to function otherwise. The same thing happened last year at this time when I got my 14 Pro Max and I recall that it had something to do with the wake fund function. The issue was resolved eventually through a software update. It has nothing to do with your charger. so far this is the second morning that I’ve gotten up to a black screen and had to hard start it. It happens with overnight charging. Hopefully if enough of us report this, they will do another software update. I also noticed that my husband’s phone does not do this and did not do this last year with the 14 Pro Max.

Mine hasn’t went black for a month.

I always charge to 100 percent if I can. Done MagSafe, wireless, C to C, A to C.

Maybe it’s some conflict between charging AND the Raise and Wake feature (or maybe not the charging at all), but once I DISABLED that, it hasn’t went black since.

Anyone else who’s had this happen consistently try that? I haven’t read other than than this seemed to be the culprit. Turning that off worked for me.

My third post on this issue.

Ive been wrestling with this issue and despite having thought I’ve solved it twice, I’m concluding the type/ manufacturer of the charger is the problem. Not the phone. If I charge on an apple supplied mag charger I don’t get the black screen. If I try to charge on 2 other proprietary supplied generic chargers, in both cases the black screen reappears. I’m wondering if there is a voltage / over night charging hyper sensitivity in the circuitry that protects the screen. I don’t find the period of time between placed on the charged and it going black is the same every time, in fact it’s variable. I’m now wondering if in fact we face a hardware problem, not necessarily software. Linked with very sensitive charger type.
