iPhone 15 Pro Max black screen

My phone has gone black while charging the last two nights. It will ring, sounds can be heard but the screen will not wake up. Had to press/release the volume up & down button then the on button to turn it back on. The phone works fine all during the day. What’s causing this?!?

I have exactly the same issue and I can provide more info about the after my experiment.

  1. This issue happens when using MagSafe dock to charge and when the phone is VERTICAL. It will be fine if the phone is set horizontally with the night clock display feature.
  2. the black screen is not dead. The phone is actually working but only screen not light on.
  3. it will automatically recover after around 3 minutes since you take the phone from charger.
  4. this issue seems only happened for 15 pro / pro max. As my wife’s iPhone 15 never has this issue.

The same issue occurred in my 15 pro max. (ios 17.1.2) But this happened on a normal 20 Watt apple charging dock and not on a MagSafe charger. So its not a hardware issue but rather a software. I remember checking my phone at 94%. A short while after i heard a vibration and when i checked the phone it had a black screen. I guess it happened when it hit 100% or after 15 minutes of screen off (in standby mode). My battery settings had “optimized battery charging” turned ON. It is a major software bug. Apple has to fix this soon !!!!

I would call because it is not something unique to your phone. My iPhone 15 Pro Max has just started doing this after a month of having it with no problems. And last year the exact thing happened on my new 14 Pro Max. It is a software issue And has nothing to do with how you charge your phone. As I recall, it had something to do with the wake function on the iPhone and affected just some not all iPhones so the resolution was slow in coming.

I think I was one click away from doing the same thing that you did! This is so frustrating as normal restart does not work. I had the same thing happen with my new 14 Pro Max last year at this time and again with my 15 PRO max a week ago. I recall that I had a very accomplished Apple support person last year who figured out that it had to do with the rise and wake function, and Apple did have a software fix for it at the time. Again this year I contacted Apple support again, and they lodged the complaint And I reminded them that it had to do with their software glitch that needs to be reported by everyone. So what I did in settings, this year was again turn off that function in settings as it will do this multiple times before they do a fix. Let’s hope the 17.1 releasing today has a fix for it. Good luck.

Hey lachaunia,

Determining the why behind this occurring will likely be difficult over the community form, but if you've isolated it to occurring during wireless charging in the evening, that's a good start. Does the same issue occur if you try charging throughout the day as well, or does it only occur at night? If the issue occurs in both instances, having your iPhone inspected wouldn't be a bad idea, as you'll likely get a better idea of the potential causes. This is a great place to review Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options.

Take care.

Good afternoon community! Since the original post, the phone hasn’t gone to the black screen since the phone was switched to 80% charging option. Did that first for about a week before also turning off the lift to wake option. It didn’t go black at all on the 80%. Thought I would try turning off the wake to lift after it was suggested on this chat.

Hopefully, Apple do a bug fix soon.

Same here. I had this issue last year when rise and wake first came out - on my new at the time iPhone 14 Pro Max. I consulted with a really knowledgeable Apple tech support person and he recommended I do that. And voila! NO longer a problem…..until I got the new iPhone 15 Pro Max this year. Had to disable again and so far NO problem. Wish they would fix their software issue!!!

My iPhone 15 Pro Max had the same (Black screen) issue after charging overnight. This was the first time I left the phone charging on my office charger all night. Usually, it is charged by my bed. This was super annoying as I got up early to get some work done and found the solution 30 minutes later. If you tap the VOLUME UP key and then tap the VOLUME down key, next hold the button on the right side for 10 seconds or until the Apple logo appears it will fix the problem. BTW, when I was trying to get to forums to find the problem, I was asked for a verification code, luckily I plugged in a new iPad yesterday so it came up there. What if I didn't have another Apple device and could not get the verification code as my phone had this black screen?

Apple, I have been a fan since the Macs with green screens first came out. Fix this problem. You are better than this. You make my life easier, not harder.

I have an iPhone 15 pro max I got about 2 weeks ago. I woke up with the same black screen issue. I could tell the phone was on and functioning. I resolved this by briefly holding the right side button and top volume button simultaneously. This brings up the slide to power off button in the top part of the phone screen. Since the screen is black you can't see it but, I was able to swipe in the general area and turn the phone off. I waited about a minute and briefly held the right side button to until the Apple icon turn the phone back on. This fixed it without resetting the phone.

Same happened to me two days ago with my iPhone 15 Pro too (EMEA model A3102)!

FWIW a few months ago it also happened to my iPhone 14 Pro - obviously indeed an IOS bug…

Totally share the frustration here and can’t understand too why this one is still not fixed!

For now I have disabled deactivation of the display under the standby settings…
