iPhone 15 Pro Max black screen

My phone has gone black while charging the last two nights. It will ring, sounds can be heard but the screen will not wake up. Had to press/release the volume up & down button then the on button to turn it back on. The phone works fine all during the day. What’s causing this?!?

Happening to me too! I just got my 15 pro max phone a little over a week ago. I’m on vacation in New Orleans…woke up this morning after using my apple mag safe charger overnight to a black screen!! Woke up my husband after trying everything to figure it out. His 15 (not pro max) was on his Apple MagSafe charger all night and his is fine! We could feel the vibrations on my phone so knew it was on but the screen was pitch black. I ended up doing a reset using the volume up, down and holding power button til it reset and came back on. When is this being fixed?? When we get back home, do I need to go to an Apple Store and exchange this phone now?! Ugghhh. So frustrating.

Happened to me while traveling in Cairns, Australia. I bought a USB-C charger in Australia by Cygnett which worked fine until I plugged it into one particular plug and it was either charged or 80%+ charged. Suddenly went black and luckily the hot spot still worked so i could use my laptop to troubleshoot with no internet. Otherwise I'd be SOL.

iOS: 17.1.2 (up to date). Model: iPhone 15 Pro, white. Date: 12/9/23.

Woke up to the black screen today. I could hear sounds upon plugging / unplugging and pressing buttons so I tried to turn it off/on and nearly activated SOS. Thankfully it didn't call 911 or send SOS alerts, but I am 100% ticked off that I had to stop troubleshooting because of the potential for this, and the inconvenience of having a completely useless >$1200 brand new phone. After reading these forums I tried plugging it in to the computer, which didn't help, then did the press volume up, press volume down, hold the power button (nothing), then plugged in, unplugged, waited, and tried volume up, volume down, power and it started.

Totally unacceptable. Apple, I want a good phone, and my time back.

This happened to me two weeks ago. it happened in the middle of the night about 2 AM. I was going to charge it when I realized the screen was black. I did all the things set to do volume up volume down reset with the volume and the right side button turned on waited forever with the two buttons pressed nothing happened. I could hear vibrations and a book that I had been reading was going on and on, and I could turn the volume up or down, but I could not turn off the book, the screen remained black for seven hours. I was going to call Apple in the morning when the screen came on again.

I am worried that this will happen the day. I am about to fly because I will not be able to turn airplane mode on as I have no control over the phone.

Or if I’m using the phone as a GPS in a strange location and this happens and then I cannot use it and I don’t even have a phone because when it’s black you cannot use it as a phone so it’s pretty much a useless piece of equipment!!

This never happened to my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I’m thinking I would like to return this phone and get back my 13 Pro Max that I had traded in but unfortunately I don’t think that would be possible as I traded in my phone to the carrier.

Have any of you had the black screen for seven hours or longer? This is not only frustrating it is scary because I do not like to be in a strange place without a phone and I cannot turn on airplane mode before I get on the plane. So if this happens before I take a flight, I guess I should leave this phone at home.. imagine paying so much for a piece of junk!!!

I've had mine since December but this JUST happened to me this week. So this is STILL happening!!! THANK YOU to all who contributed below. I'll consolidate what worked for me. The one thing I have to add, combining the below, is that

1) A 15 Pro / Pro Max issue (ProMax for me)

2) Regardless of the charging hardware/type, it appears to happen when charging VERTICALLY not horizontally. So maybe it is a gyro issue partially?

Mine never woke up naturally after 30 minutes of pressing buttons (and 🫨 panicking!) This is the fix that worked for me:

* Tap volume up

* Tap volume down

* Press and hold right side button until you see apple logo

...back to normal! (for now...)

I’m with you!!!! Apple needs to fix this so it’s important that everyone report this software problem. They know what the fix is b/c the same exact thing happened to me last year at this time with my new at the time 14 Pro Max! And again this year. As I recall, it had something to do with the rise and wake feature so I turned it off in settings again this year, and I haven’t had a problem since. Good luck.

Same thing here on a 12 Pro Max 512Go, with a standard USB-C cable connected to a USB hub. The phone was laid vertically. I had to reset it using the volume up/down/power button combination. Next time, I'll wait a few minutes to see if the screen turns on by itself, as some comments have suggested. In the meantime, I’ll post feedback on Product Feedback - Apple. I was really concerned that my brand-new phone was already dead.
