iPhone 15 Pro Max black screen

My phone has gone black while charging the last two nights. It will ring, sounds can be heard but the screen will not wake up. Had to press/release the volume up & down button then the on button to turn it back on. The phone works fine all during the day. What’s causing this?!?

I have exactly the same issue and I can provide more info about the after my experiment.

  1. This issue happens when using MagSafe dock to charge and when the phone is VERTICAL. It will be fine if the phone is set horizontally with the night clock display feature.
  2. the black screen is not dead. The phone is actually working but only screen not light on.
  3. it will automatically recover after around 3 minutes since you take the phone from charger.
  4. this issue seems only happened for 15 pro / pro max. As my wife’s iPhone 15 never has this issue.

I've had mine since December but this JUST happened to me this week. So this is STILL happening!!! THANK YOU to all who contributed below. I'll consolidate what worked for me. The one thing I have to add, combining the below, is that

1) A 15 Pro / Pro Max issue (ProMax for me)

2) Regardless of the charging hardware/type, it appears to happen when charging VERTICALLY not horizontally. So maybe it is a gyro issue partially?

Mine never woke up naturally after 30 minutes of pressing buttons (and 🫨 panicking!) This is the fix that worked for me:

* Tap volume up

* Tap volume down

* Press and hold right side button until you see apple logo

...back to normal! (for now...)

The exact same thing has happened to my iPhone 15 Pro Max. After picking up the phone from its 12 South stand charge ( sold by Apple now), the screen remains black, but seems to function otherwise. The same thing happened last year at this time when I got my 14 Pro Max and I recall that it had something to do with the wake fund function. The issue was resolved eventually through a software update. It has nothing to do with your charger. so far this is the second morning that I’ve gotten up to a black screen and had to hard start it. It happens with overnight charging. Hopefully if enough of us report this, they will do another software update. I also noticed that my husband’s phone does not do this and did not do this last year with the 14 Pro Max.

My phone was charging overnight, apple cord, and apple charging block. Phone was VERTICAL on a stand. Screen was black and when I tried to press and hold VOLUME UP and POWER BUTTON an EMERGENCY ALARM went off and a LIGHT would flash.

This finally worked for me:

Volume up (click fast)

Volume down (click fast)

Then Press and hold power button

I seem to have the same issue with my iPhone 15 Pro, charging overnight on the Apple MagSafe charger and finding it has the black screen in the morning. I have recovered it once by receiving an incoming call and on a second time using the vol-up, vol-down, hold on button method. It only seems to have been happening since I upgraded the software to 17.1.1 (I have had the phone for a couple of months). I have just upgraded too 17.1.2, fingers crossed!

I have iPhone 15 pro max. For me also it happened twice. I am a new iPhone user and I got tensed as I was not aware of hard reset. When it happened for the first time, I removed my sim and placed it back and it worked. But the second time, didn't work that way. After reading this forum, learnt about hard reset and it is working now. After this I am hearing from my closer ones - "See, I had told you, not to buy 15. It has so many issues. 14 pro max is better..."

Aaaah, Apple, you betrayed 15 users. Really diappointed.

I got my iPhone 15 pro a couple of months ago and this morning I woke up to a black screen. It was plugged into an Apple block with an Apple charging cord. I unplugged the cord from the phone and it didn't come on, so I plugged it back in. Then I unplugged the cord from the block (cord still plugged into phone) and it came on. I didn't see on the long list of comments on this thread that anyone else had done this? But I was glad that worked. Maybe I'll also try the 80 percent charge setting. I don't like not being able to use my phone when I wake up!

It happened to me twice. It only happens overnight when I use the MagSafe charger branded by Apple. I hear my phone ringing, the screen is black, and I don’t know where to press. I had my wife called me from her phone, and after a few seconds of pressing buttons, the screen we will flicker on. Apple, it’s time to fix this problem. I have an eye iPhone 14 pro max.

This just happened to me. I woke up to my 7-month old crying (he's teething) and I wondered what time it was on this first day of 2024, but my phone appeared dead! Of course immediately I thought we all had been hacked and our phones were all dead. But then fiddling with the buttons I accidentally called 911 so I knew it was working. I had to tell the dispacher in a very sleepy and confused voice that I was trying to get my phone to work but I couldn't see the screen and he would have to disconnect the call. Thankfully, (unlike another user here who had an angry operator not understanding the issue) he was very understanding and hung up for me. I got my computer and had to google the hard reset.... got stuck on this string looking how to do so and reading all the comments (quick volume up, quick volume down, hold power botton until apple logo appears), and now it's back. SO ANNOYING. Happy New Year.

This also happened to me since I restarted my phone I never had this problem again. It usually happens on first load and then nothing.

To resolve the problem, simply reboot your iPhone. It is not necessary to go to an Apple store. The iPhone 15 black screen can also be caused by a simple bug or a temporary problem. In this case, a simple restart of the device can help resolve the issue. However, since the device is currently unresponsive, you need to force restart it. To do this, you can follow the following steps: Step 1: To force restart your iPhone 15 series, press and release the "Volume Up" button on the left side of your phone. Next, press and release the "Volume Down" button, then press and hold the "Side" button on the right side of the phone. Step 2: Hold the button until the Apple logo appears, then release your finger. This will force start your unresponsive iPhone 15.
