iPhone 15 Pro Max black screen

My phone has gone black while charging the last two nights. It will ring, sounds can be heard but the screen will not wake up. Had to press/release the volume up & down button then the on button to turn it back on. The phone works fine all during the day. What’s causing this?!?

I have exactly the same issue and I can provide more info about the after my experiment.

  1. This issue happens when using MagSafe dock to charge and when the phone is VERTICAL. It will be fine if the phone is set horizontally with the night clock display feature.
  2. the black screen is not dead. The phone is actually working but only screen not light on.
  3. it will automatically recover after around 3 minutes since you take the phone from charger.
  4. this issue seems only happened for 15 pro / pro max. As my wife’s iPhone 15 never has this issue.

This morning I experienced the same issue. Phone seemded to work (by the sound of it and action button (light on), but screen remained pitch black after night charging with cable that came with iPhone Pro 15 and standard Apple charger. Apple software fully up to date! I'll contact Apple for replacing my iPhone (its 14 days old so have the right to return in Europe) if there is no quick fix. Please reply Apple, this seems to become a common issue reading alle these comments with same issue!

IT CALLED 911 AND I COULDN’T DO ANYTHING

I was sleeping and woke up to check the time at 2am and the screen was black. Every key and sequence I pressed worked was responsive, even Siri. I pressed the lock button too many times and it called 911 and blasted SOS to all my emergency contacts and I COULDN’T HANG UP or cancel it. The operator was very upset with me and said I could be charged. I could do nothing but ask her to disconnect the call because my iPhone malfunctioned. After googling how to restart the phone, I had to calm down all my family and friends from the SOS message.

This is HORRIBLE. Imagine I had an emergency where I needed the screen to call a family member or look up my location to give to a 911 operator.

For a company super focused on emergency features this glitch is a huge problem and law suit waiting to happen.

Same thing here on a 12 Pro Max 512Go, with a standard USB-C cable connected to a USB hub. The phone was laid vertically. I had to reset it using the volume up/down/power button combination. Next time, I'll wait a few minutes to see if the screen turns on by itself, as some comments have suggested. In the meantime, I’ll post feedback on Product Feedback - Apple. I was really concerned that my brand-new phone was already dead.

About 6 am I went to look at my phone and I thought it died during the night. I noticed that I could heard sounds of buttons and just out of curiosity said “hey siri, what is my battery percentage” to which she replied 100%. I unplugged the iPhone and left it for about an hour. Came back and the screen was back on. This happened during a trip to the Greek islands where I actually needed my phone for various things like Uber, maps, safari, email where all of my ticket codes were saved and of course needing to get around. I’m not sure if this is a charger issue but will investigate once at home. This issue still needs to be resolved though as it gave me a panic attack.

Same happened to me this morning, iPhone 15 Pro Max , MagSafe charger, screen black,

had to do a reset, have to say I got a scare as I really needed the phone today.

Have the phone one month and this is the first time it happened, use MagSafe charger every night.

This really needs a software update to stop this happening.

I have the latest iOS version downloaded.

Same problem. Picked up iPhone 15 Pro (not Max) from wireless charger, and I could feel that the buttons were responsive but the screen was black and unresponsive. I did the top button quick press, bottom button quick press, and power button long press to restart. The iPhone 15 Pro restarted and appears to be functioning normally. Apple, please address this issue thank you.

I have just had the problem first time now. Plugged in on charge at night, phone was laying flat on my nightstand could still turn torch on so I knew the phone itself was on but couldn’t do anything else. I tried changing charging cable at first thinking it hadn’t charged but I realised it was charged and was just the screen, tried multiple different options in regards to pushing lock/unlock and volume buttons and I could feel it vibrate but still no screen. I got up out of bed to try and search on another device as to why then all of a sudden I looked at my phone and screen is on and battery is 100%. Very strange phone is approx 1 month old

Hello - this is happening to me too iPhone 15promax - when I charge it with USB-C cable from Apple overnight- the next morning is full charged and screen black. I can hear the screen working and hear clicking on lock and unlock but can’t see what I’m doing until I force restart. It’s nothing to do with wireless charging in my case, but think it’s same issue as everybody else. . And see it’s 100% charged - (optimised charging setting ) just saw update today 17.1.2 not sure of this will fix will report back

This exact thing has happened to me twice. On Sunday, I was without my phone for the entire day. My entire family was freaking out because I wouldn't answer the phone. I finally got an appointment at the Apple Store. The second I walked into the Apple Store, the screen turned back on after being black for 8 hours. They ran a diagnostic check on it and said everthing was fine. A few days later, it did the same exact thing. It always happens after the phone has been charging at night. I use a MagSafe charger and charge the phone while laying horizontally. I sure hope Apple fixes this soon!

After updating to iOS 17.1.2 still experiencing black screen of death after charging the iPhone 15 Pro Max. (Battery-health, optimisation enabled).

The funny thing is, it’s not totally black death, everything works in the background. (In the darkness)

Unfortunately, the only fix to this issue is performing the hard reset. In my opinion, this is a serious issue that needs to be solved ASAP.

Keep in mind that we are talking about the most expensive cell phone in the whole world.

What happened to “ It’s just works”???

I’ll experiment with disabling the “Rise and wake option”

Woke up to the black screen today. I could hear sounds upon plugging / unplugging and pressing buttons so I tried to turn it off/on and nearly activated SOS. Thankfully it didn't call 911 or send SOS alerts, but I am 100% ticked off that I had to stop troubleshooting because of the potential for this, and the inconvenience of having a completely useless >$1200 brand new phone. After reading these forums I tried plugging it in to the computer, which didn't help, then did the press volume up, press volume down, hold the power button (nothing), then plugged in, unplugged, waited, and tried volume up, volume down, power and it started.

Totally unacceptable. Apple, I want a good phone, and my time back.

My iphone 14 has done exactly the same thing and so has my daughters. This is so frustrating as I cannot get calls but I can hear them. The " quick fix" does not work. It takes about 4 hours for me to actually see the screen. This is obviously a software problem. This has been happening for at least 3 months. And, I have all updated my phone. I had my iphone checked with the genius bar and everything "seems" fine. But when I charge it overnight this happens. The apple genius are so smart. I know you can fix this.

This just happened to me. Last night I put my phone into low battery mode to save its charge, I plugged it in to charge like normal (with the cable that came with the phone in the box) and went to sleep. I woke up this morning to my alarm but I couldn't turn it off because of the black screen. I had to force restart my phone to get the screen to come back on. I have no idea why this would happen, I just got the phone in November, the only difference to my normal routine that I can think of was that I put my phone into low battery mode (which I never really have to do because the battery life is pretty good)

I’ve had my iPhone Pro15 for two months and charge at night on a MagSafe charger. This morning my alarm went off but the screen would not illuminate. I did not know about the volume up, down, and right power button to reset. Asked Siri to adjust brightness to maximum. Which Siri said occurred but still a black screen. Had to use the volume down + right power button simultaneously and then guess where the power off slide was at the bottom of the screen I couldn’t see. Concerned this may happen again based on these comments. Has anyone had to replace their phone for this reoccurring?
