iPhone 15 Pro Max black screen

My phone has gone black while charging the last two nights. It will ring, sounds can be heard but the screen will not wake up. Had to press/release the volume up & down button then the on button to turn it back on. The phone works fine all during the day. What’s causing this?!?

Happening to me too! I just got my 15 pro max phone a little over a week ago. I’m on vacation in New Orleans…woke up this morning after using my apple mag safe charger overnight to a black screen!! Woke up my husband after trying everything to figure it out. His 15 (not pro max) was on his Apple MagSafe charger all night and his is fine! We could feel the vibrations on my phone so knew it was on but the screen was pitch black. I ended up doing a reset using the volume up, down and holding power button til it reset and came back on. When is this being fixed?? When we get back home, do I need to go to an Apple Store and exchange this phone now?! Ugghhh. So frustrating.

I just had this too. Along with the wifi issues and the black screen of death -- the iPhone 15 Pro Max is easily the buggiest iPhone I've ever had and I've owned iPhones since the 3G.

Wirelessly charge overnight -> black screen of death -> alarm goes off in the morning -> panic that I am late to work because I can't tell what time it is -> hard reset the phone (tap up then down volume buttons, then hold far right button) -> phone turns on and works with 100% battery.

I only had my iPhone 15 pro for 3 days when I got the black screen. It happened whilst charging overnight. The haptics were working but I couldn’t see anything. I eventually did a forced restart & it came back. My digital clock was very faded on the front screen though & didn’t look right so I restarted again & it came back normal.

This has since happened a further 3 times! I’ve changed the charger to see if it was that. The last couple times the force restart isn’t even happening properly. It just stays black then 10/15 minutes later the screen just randomly comes back. There’s no apple logo showing me it’s shutting down or restarting or anything. I’ve had this phone less than a month & it’s up to date with software updates. This shouldn’t be happening with a brand new phone!

I’m now thinking I need to return it as it’s clearly faulty.

I have iPhone 15 pro max. For me also it happened twice. I am a new iPhone user and I got tensed as I was not aware of hard reset. When it happened for the first time, I removed my sim and placed it back and it worked. But the second time, didn't work that way. After reading this forum, learnt about hard reset and it is working now. After this I am hearing from my closer ones - "See, I had told you, not to buy 15. It has so many issues. 14 pro max is better..."

Aaaah, Apple, you betrayed 15 users. Really diappointed.

my comment was removed i don’t know why ?!

anyway, i had this issue twice while my phone was charging at night , i just plug off my phone and let it for few minutes then the screen goes back normal !

i turned off always-on display and the problem never happened again !

i can turn off always-on before charging then after my phone fully charged i plug it off from the charger then turn back always-on display.

this is not practical solution but at least the phone won’t failed me when the need is immediate.

This exact same thing happened to me today at 4:15am. Screen was black and I was trying to get it to turn back on and it activated emergency SOS and called 911. I couldn’t even see which keys to press to hang up/stop it from occurring because the screen was pitch black!! Thankfully, I think emergency services knew it was a mistake & did not come to my house.

This just happened while corded charging with IIOS 17.1 running. I used my 65-watt charger when it happened.

Mythbusting the magsafe theory, but hopefully, that can help move one step closer to a reason and ultimate fix.

17.2 is out, updating now - hoping it is fixed.

of note - the volume up, down, and right - WORKED instantly

I have been trying to turn on my iPhone 15 pro max for over an hour!! I have never wrote a complaint before but this is ridiculous! I woke up to a black screen after charging my phone last night however I didn’t plug it in till 3am and it’s 7:43…. and I took my phone off the charger an HOUR ago. I am now going to be late to work because I was trying to get my phone to turn on!! my phone still isn’t working and I need it for my job and at school. If I knew this was going to happen when I got an “upgrade” I would’ve just kept my old phone. I tried everything that was recommended…. do I need to go back in and get another phone?!?

I got my iPhone 15 pro a couple of months ago and this morning I woke up to a black screen. It was plugged into an Apple block with an Apple charging cord. I unplugged the cord from the phone and it didn't come on, so I plugged it back in. Then I unplugged the cord from the block (cord still plugged into phone) and it came on. I didn't see on the long list of comments on this thread that anyone else had done this? But I was glad that worked. Maybe I'll also try the 80 percent charge setting. I don't like not being able to use my phone when I wake up!

I’ve just had this issue occur on my new iPhone 15 Pro Max as well last night whilst I was working night shift. (Few weeks old, Optimised Battery turned on)

My iPhone was sitting on my desk charging (genuine Apple cable & adaptor), it was locked when it vibrated, the screen lit up for less than a second then the screen turned completely black. I only saw it happen out of the corner of my eye as I was focused on something else. I could feel the phone was vibrating and clearly still on, fiddling with it accidentally activated Emergency Services which I couldn’t cancel (which is a whole different tale in itself). I’d taken it off charge and it still didn’t work. I googled the issue and found this forum as the first link which is mildly concerning. I’m glad the hard reset worked, but that is incredibly annoying for a brand new device.

I hope this isn’t a faulty iPhone..

The same story is here . In a way I am glad to see it’s not only my issue . But it doesn’t make me feel any better about my new IPhone15 Pro Max purchase !

I was so excited to get it , just two weeks ago … until this Black Screen problem start happening repeatedly in a morning , after charging .

I am thinking to take it back … it’s not only annoying , like some mentioned in this blog , but THIS PHONE IS UNRELIABLE !

My iphone 14 has done exactly the same thing and so has my daughters. This is so frustrating as I cannot get calls but I can hear them. The " quick fix" does not work. It takes about 4 hours for me to actually see the screen. This is obviously a software problem. This has been happening for at least 3 months. And, I have all updated my phone. I had my iphone checked with the genius bar and everything "seems" fine. But when I charge it overnight this happens. The apple genius are so smart. I know you can fix this.

This just happened to me. Last night I put my phone into low battery mode to save its charge, I plugged it in to charge like normal (with the cable that came with the phone in the box) and went to sleep. I woke up this morning to my alarm but I couldn't turn it off because of the black screen. I had to force restart my phone to get the screen to come back on. I have no idea why this would happen, I just got the phone in November, the only difference to my normal routine that I can think of was that I put my phone into low battery mode (which I never really have to do because the battery life is pretty good)
