iPhone 15 Pro Max battery draining without use

I got my iPhone 15 Pro Max 2 weeks ago and its running iOS 17.0.3. Before I sleep I left it with 100% battery charge, waking up after 7hrs my battery went to 89% without even using it. Even though I followed all the settings in the internet on how to keep my battery from draining too fast but the problem still the same. I even put it on low power mode all the time. I hope they will fix this as soon as possible.

There is nothing to fix. Any cell phone uses energy continuously, as long as it isn’t powered off. This means that if it is not connected to power for 8 hours the battery level will be lower at the end of that time. How much lower depends on what apps you have, how many notifications you have enabled (which will be delivered and processed by apps even if you force close apps-they will relaunch when a notification arrives), and, probably most important, how strong your cellular signal from the network is; your phone maintains a "conversation" with the network so your phone can be found when a call or text arrives, and low signal strength requires much more energy to do this update to the network. Thus, you should be charging your phone overnight so this nighttime usage is powered by the external source rather than the battery.

And 11% overnight is a reasonable discharge rate for the normal things that any smartphone does; a smartphone is never without use; there are always processes running on it.

If you search the forum you will see a steady stream of posts about perceived battery drain issues, not just for the latest iPhone, but for EVERY iPhone model ever sold, and after EVERY iOS update ever released. So clearly all iPhones have battery drain problems all the time. I’ve listed a few of them below.

Specifically, if your previous phone did not have 5G network capability then an iPhone with 5G will use more energy than an iPhone with LTE, 4G, 3G or older technologies, both because 5G inherently uses more energy than 4G for the same connection, and also because 5G network deployment is still being built out, so towers that support 5G may be further apart in your area, and thus phones need to post power to remain connection.

I started by saying that battery issues occur to a few phones with all versions after an iOS update, and the responses implied somehow that iOS 17.0.3 was “different” and was an issue that hadn’t happened before. So to back up my statement here are some threads on battery issues with previous versions (far from all of the relevant threads, but a reasonable sampling):

The bottom line is that it isn’t a problem with the specific version, and, if you want it resolved, you need to troubleshoot why your phone has this problem when 99+% of over 1 billion iPhones do not.

I had an iPhone 12 Pro and it was fine with battery. I listen to podcasts at work and I would get out of work with 70-80% remaining. I now have an iPhone 15 pro and I get out of work and am at 20% and need to charge when I get home. It’s wild, the battery clearly has an issue. Not doing anything different that would use battery like that. According to my battery section in settings it says Spotify running in background used 11% battery life in 1hr 20mins of background use not screen on. So in my 10hr shift I’m lucky if I get out with 20% remaining. iPhone 12 Pro I’d walk out with 70% remaining easily

I’m using iphone 15 pro max for almost 2 months. In 17.2 I didn’t seen overnight battery drain even if my internet was on at night, but after updating to 17.3 my phone’s battery gets low fastly, and even when my internet, bluetooth, wifi and even location services were off my battery got dropped overnight.Apple this is not what to expect form 15 pro max.17.1 was the best in terms of battery, but now in 17.3 it’s really bad.

I have been experiencing all sort of security and hardware issues with my iPhone 15 Pro Max as well:

  1. Couldn’t get the “Advanced Data Protection” to enable even after trying it through a screen sharing session with several Apple Sr. Advisors. Then I was scheduled for in-person appointment at a local Apple Store to go over the process. The night before the appointment, I decided to trying it out again, the feature ironically worked.
  2. Now, soon after, downloading any new Apps from the App Store is taking anywhere from 10-20 minutes. Often when navigating through the websites have been impossible.
  3. The device battery is draining over night without any valid usages except that there are Apps as expected running a refresh on the background, most of which are, the default Apps. This is important for the Apps to remain updated.
  4. As of the last two days, I noticed an item under the Battery usages showing up, and this is called “No cell coverage”. This is a very suspicious item which could be anything, and it is the item that’s currently using up the highest battery %.
  5. Discussions about this issue with several Apple Advisors today have led to no where. All, very concerning. Apple set up such a high price tag for the iPhone 15 Pro Max device but there are more issues with this device OS than every other devices from Apple. I recently even purchased an older version of an Apple iPhone, 13, and to test it out for myself and had no problems. I obviously returned it back to the store because it was just for testing.

My iPhone 15 pro max has been behaving similar people affected by “Covid-19” when it comes to performance. Its security features are proven to be a complete failure. They hope that the Developers are reading these feedback. The behaviors of this phone has been due to the continuous attacks and malware. I have already processed a full factory reset on this phone more than 10 times by using my Mac. However, after just a few days the issues will penetrate into the device again causing all sorts of problems. As of current, and this started yesterday, I am seeing that an item lists as “Recently Deleted Apps” have been using up a significant amount of battery like 17-22%. It’s the second item under the battery statistics. How can deleted apps remain hidden and running on battery? Totally nonsense.

I’m experiencing the same thing! Went from iPhone 13 Pro Max to an iPhone 15 pro max & my battery life is either the same or worse! I think it’s a processor issue. Because I can be on this site or the regular Apple website & it might go down 1-2% in 20-30 minutes while in use. But right when I close the safari app out & turn the screen off & yet in approximately 30-120 seconds the battery will immediately drain another 1-2% after I tap the screen for the screen to come on. So basically it uses more battery when not in use than it does while being used. The always on screen, location services, Siri, automatic updates & downloads, Bluetooth, iCloud cellular synching, hotspots, airdrop, background refresh, keyboard haptics, rise to wake screen, etc. are all off.

Hi Everyone!

I've got the same problem in my new iphone 15 pro max.

It has a clear battery drainig problem. My iphone 13 pro max was immortal, when not in use it dropped max 1% in one night. The 15 pro max is always dropping percentage and it last worst then an 83%(battery capacity) iphone 13 pro max.

For sure it is a software problem, we need to find the cause that affect us. Probably it's just a bug on some settings that makes the software spend energy for no reason.

Thanks everyone!

I recently migrated to IPhone 15 pro max from iPhone XS Max .

I too am experiencing that my iPhone 15 pro max is discharging much faster than iPhone XS Max with similar apps and usage. Phone is mainly on Wi-Fi at home / office or on 4G network , 5G network is ON only on very rare occasions ( may be 5mins in entire day) .

I still have my iPhone XS Max with me and it battery health is 80% but it gives me a better battery back up than the new iPhone 15 pro max with 100% battery health.
