iOS 17.1 Battery drain

I think any of us here is asking why we all experience such a bad battery drain after iOS 17.1.

i made the update yesterday and had to recharge twice in 4 hours.

it is said that the background activities after update are demanding ones but that’s not the whole truth.

during the night I recharged my iPhone 15 PRO Max and never really reached 100% because of a really poor battery management and process handling by the system.

now trying to turn off the “always on” screen feature see what’s happen.

if anyone at Apple is reading please solve this because the issue is really affecting bad the life of iPhone users…. And it never happened such a bad thing from you so I am quite surprised there’s no way to find a quick solution.

OK Guys, after installing 17.1.1 my iPhone 15 pro works as it should. After two hours of listening YouTube with the screen off there was no heat, not even warm and the battery was also normal; 9% was gone after these two hours of listening. After 17.1 just 5-10 minutes of listening was enough to make it hot. Should be ok now.

Adding my own anecdote in support of this issue - it’s real.

iphone se 2020: after update to iOS 17.0 from 16 - battery life halved by about 50% - I have to charge my phone from <10% during the day, which I never had to do before. This kind of thing is dangerous! People need a phone these days, and to have it fail on them mid day in an emergency is serious business.

Followed advice and turned all the background ops off, which helped a bit, but phone still had significantly less life than before the update. Thought I’d need a new battery (health was 83%) so installed a replacement. This ‘fixed’ things for a few days, but now we’re back draining battery at a much faster rate than I’m used to. I’m not a conspiracist, but genuinely feel like this occurrence is specifically engineered to force people into a phone upgrade! No chance Apple - my next will be a Fairphone after this experience.

My wife has the same phone model: iPhone se 2020, bought around the same date. I strongly advised that she stick with 16.0 iOS, but it managed an auto update one night… A week later, and her battery is pouring out usage as mine was, which fully reinforces my own experience.

I updated to 17.2 last night - will

see if this improves things. I’ve captured every update since 17.0, and each has suffered poor battery usage

I have an iPhone 14 Pro and am noticing the same thing. I have to basically leave it on the charger if I want to use it at all, and it's incredibly frustrating that, with a $1000 device that is less than a year old, Apple's response is "go ahead and disable all of the features that were selling points for this phone and that worked without draining the battery before iOS 17."

I've disabled the always-on display and 5G, and have an automation that turns low power mode back on anytime it turns off. So why shouldn't I just have my iPhone 13 Pro back? Is the only way to get a trillion dollar company to care that we have to file a class-action lawsuit?

edit: I’d like to point out that safari seems to have very high battery usage even though I just scroll thru forums and regularly clear cache. Any suggestions to fix welcome.

I got an iPhone 12 the beginning of this year and used it somewhere around iOS 16.6. I didn’t make any more updates because I knew the end of an iOS and the beginning of the next always drain battery. It had pretty good battery and I could use it two days without charging, but unfortunately I found out it was contract locked to the carrier of previous owner. So I got an iPhone 13 (using now) unlocked and it made me update to iOS 17.

I HAVE TO CHARGE THIS THING ALL DAY! 90% health, Low Power Mode on, True Tone/Bluetooth/Auto Brightness/Hey Siri off, low brightness, Background Refresh completely off, System Location services all off. STILL I have to charge so often even though I don’t even watch videos or anything power-consuming.

I didn’t have to do half these things on my iPhone 12 yet it had double the life of this iPhone 13 even though it was on iOS 16. I hate to say it but I think Apple screwed us and themselves over with this one. Also I’ve used this iPhone 13 for a month on iOS 17 and BH went from 90-88. iPhone 12 iOS 16 had 100% health for 1/3 of a year.

I also have the 14 Pro Max and the same experience since 17.1. My phone is also heating up a lot even when not in use and the drain is so bad that it struggles to reach a full charge even when left on the charger over night. I have tried all the suggestions shared online, but nothing really helped. At the moment it is a bit more controlled when I permanently run the battery in low battery mode. Whenever I charge up and the low battery mode gets switched off, I switch it right back on. This seems to at least help manage the situation, but it is not good for user experience. You can really see the performance impact on the phone and that without even reaching my normal use battery life from before the upgrade. I was waiting eagerly for the 17.1.1 upgrade option yet, but it also seems to have made things worse in my case. I have tried to also understand which apps use the most batter, but from what I can make out, the battery usage of all of them, built in or 3rd party are very high. It just depends which ones I have used more during the day.

If you have not downloaded 17.1.2 then don’t do it or you will see it. I would wait until the apps catch back up. We have 4 iPhones in the home, 2 13 pro, 1 13 pro max, and a 14 pro( my work cell). The only one not affected is the 14 pro which our company has not approved 17.1.2 for download. The phone app and mail app are the largest background draws next to FB. All background push is off so it is only supposed to update when opened. I’m sure 3rd party apps are most of the issue, but seeing I did not make or receive a call yesterday I’m clueless why the phone app showed about 10% of the battery usage. It was not even sitting in the background.

I've just turned on "App Privacy Report" in Privacy & Security. With no apps currently running it appears the mail is going crazy in the background. In addition Mail, Messages, Calendar, and Contacts appear to be accessing Contacts every minute or two. I'm not certain what to do with this info or if there is a setting I can turn off, but perhaps this will help anyone with insight into the programming side of things to fix this. Or perhaps others can check this themselves and see if they are noticing the same thing?

I have the iPhone 14 Pro Max it worked great battery lasted. I loved it. The battery was the selling point for me. But when I updated to the IOS 17.1 my battery definitely started dying a lot faster.. I had to find a charger at work which I haven’t had to do since I bought the phone. When another update for iOS 17.1.1 came out I thought it would fix it.. it has not it actually seems slightly worse. I really hope this issue gets resolved it is ruining my battery health.. it went from very good battery health to 88%, and if this continues much longer I’m sure I’ll be taking it in for a new battery 😞

I think the point was missed here. The update is causing the issue. My 13 pro max was charged once a day, now it is too hot to touch around the camera. Just going on this forum I’ve lost 20% battery. And during charging I am having to place an order ice pack on a thin kitchen towel or it will burn to the touch. There is something wrong with the iOS, and it’s not following the iPhone user guide🙄.
