music just starts playing automatically on my iPhone

iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 17.0.3 - not subscribed to Apple Music.

Frequently, when the phone is linked to some source like home pod mini or CarPlay or a speaker or something, it just spontaneously decides to start playing music l, usually starting alphabetically by the title of the song.

I have searched online and found suggestions like this one https://freeyourmusic.com/blog/stop-apple-music-from-automatically-playing#

which says:

How to disable Autoplay in Apple Music is explained here and applies to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch:

  1. Select a song in the Music app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. After clicking on the mini player, tap on "up next"and look for the Autoplay icon (the infinity symbol).
  3. To turn off the Autoplay feature when it is turned on, tap the Autoplay icon.
  4. The Autoplay playlist should instantly disappear if the process is successful, and Apple Music will stop playing music on its own.

but when I try to follow these directions I get stuck at step 3 because I cannot find any autoplay infinity symbol icon that can be turned off.

help! This is really annoying. I hate it when my devices decide to do things without my asking it to.

I found it. You pick a song, click on the mini bar that shows the song that is playing, click the icon on the bottom right that has 3 vertical dots with lines to the right. That will bring up a list of what songs are going to play. To the right of “Playing next”, you will see 3 icons: shuffle (crossing arrows), repeat (arrows circling), and the infinity sign.

I tried both disabling the infinity symbol and changing the settings to Automatically Airplay Never. Neither fixed the problem. Apple Music always starts playing. I've also had it start playing music after using AirPods on a phone call and removing the taking the AirPods. This is really annoying because I don't use Apple Music.

Okay—this worked for me, but not unfortunately, until I had deleted the Music app (which didn’t fix the problem anyway).

This problem was connected to my AirPods. I had connected them to my iPad a couple days ago instead of my iPhone phone (which I usually use with my AirPods). It wasn’t until I took the AirPods out of my ears, that I realized that the music was coming through my iPad, not my phone. It was an easy fix to turn the music off on my iPad.

Problem solved. Hope this helps somebody.

It is so frustrating for me too whenever I start my car, music from ITunes play automatically and I want to play my Spotify playlists. Much worse is when you move tab from your option on car screen, let say AM, FM, iPod, Bluetooth , it would default back to to the iTunes music. I cancelled my iTunes subscription already coz Spotify has a much broader selections. Apple please give an option to have our music defaults.

Apple Music randomly turns on and the infinity button doesn’t help. I even had to go as far to not use Bluetooth in my car which makes it hard to hear using the phone now. It’s so aggravating when I turn on my car and Apple Music turns on by itself and plays random songs as loud as can be. I’m definitely going to get rid of Apple Music if there isn’t a fix for this. Such bs!!!

Thankyou Forgottenrim. I just tried your solution but like others no infinity icon - I have the latest IOS.

in my old Freelander Apple Music now starts more frequently than ever and unprotected. Latterly immediately a phone call has ended it cuts in.

clearly and intentional act.

I don’t want to delete the app as I have some great music in my library 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️😫

You’d think apple would finally do something about this! It’s been the same on all iPhones and it’s horrible.

I disabled “hand off” and it’ll still automatically play in my car.

it’s one of the most irritating IPhone features. Instead of adding 50 minor fixes each month, they should focus on the items pepper hate about the phone.

Wrong. The problem is with iPhone because the same thing happens with directly connected headphones.

If you read my post and the links provided, you would see that it is specific to Bluetooth connections in a vehicle. You have provided no information to refute that. For your situation it may be useful to include the manufacturer of the headphones and if the music starts from Apple Music, Spotify, or Pandora along with the connection type. It would also be helpful to provide any troubleshooting steps that you have already done:

  • Did you test with another phone manufacturer to conclude it only happens on iPhone?
  • Did you try the AutoPlay setting on Apple Music?
  • Do you use any other music app or is it only Apple Music?

I don't have a wired set of headphones to test on my own device, but I'm sure others will be able to provide more insight. It may be best to start a new question as the responses are starting to stray off topic being wired/wireless and headphone/ car audio.

So why does this happen with headphones. I will be listening to an audiobook, have to pause it for a bit and then click my airpods to resume the audiobook but apple music starts up instead? Very frustrating.

I suggest doing a new post with the details of the headphones and the app used to play the audiobook. Sorry, but I only have AirPods, so unable to troubleshoot. Maybe someone else will be able to provide more insight or a solution. It could very well be a problem with the AirPods only wanting to play Apple Music, I just do not know. Your use case that you describe should be easily reproducible by others.

Apple Music isn’t very good. I had to delete it and move over to Spotify. Every time I got done watching a YouTube or any other media my Apple Music would instantly turn on and start playing. It’s very frustrating specially when you’re driving and you have to pause looking at the road to turn off Apple Music and go back to the original media source and press play. There should be some sort of toggle that makes Apple Music turn off. No other app does this.
