music just starts playing automatically on my iPhone

iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 17.0.3 - not subscribed to Apple Music.

Frequently, when the phone is linked to some source like home pod mini or CarPlay or a speaker or something, it just spontaneously decides to start playing music l, usually starting alphabetically by the title of the song.

I have searched online and found suggestions like this one https://freeyourmusic.com/blog/stop-apple-music-from-automatically-playing#

which says:

How to disable Autoplay in Apple Music is explained here and applies to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch:

  1. Select a song in the Music app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. After clicking on the mini player, tap on "up next"and look for the Autoplay icon (the infinity symbol).
  3. To turn off the Autoplay feature when it is turned on, tap the Autoplay icon.
  4. The Autoplay playlist should instantly disappear if the process is successful, and Apple Music will stop playing music on its own.

but when I try to follow these directions I get stuck at step 3 because I cannot find any autoplay infinity symbol icon that can be turned off.

help! This is really annoying. I hate it when my devices decide to do things without my asking it to.

This certainly seems to be an intentional act by Apple to force us to listen to Apple Music rather than their competitors. No auto play icon on my iphone14promax. This is beyond irritating, frustrating and insulting for Apple to do this. I am getting sick of their efforts to control and monopolize.

What exactly do you mean when you say “the stereo”?

When you said "CarPlay or a speaker", I was referring to the Head Unit of the vehicle, but it does not have to be a vehicle and will play with any bluetooth connection that provides audio. Some Bluetooth devices will allow you to Pause/Play music and those also usually have a setting for AutoPlay, but most vehicles do not have the option to Play/Pause bluetooth on the head unit so they will always play when connected.

CarPlay — at least on my car — doesn’t work in Bluetooth mode. There is a Bluetooth option, but it’s separate from CarPlay. The CarPlay app is activated only when you use a USB connection. So, I’m talking about USB connections.

That Shortcut will only activate on a bluetooth connection. CarPlay can work using Bluetooth, but only on the vehicles with Wireless CarPlay. Since you have a wired connection to CarPlay that Shortcut will not work. You can delete that one though and instead of tapping "Bluetooth" after "Create Personal Automation", tap "CarPlay". It will show "Connects" by default, then tap "Next" and continue on with the shortcut after the "Next" step.

I have not tried that one, but I think it will still work for you with the wired CarPlay connection. Please let me know how it works for you.

Hey, everyone may not know what you know and that’s ok. Help with the knowledge without being rude ok? Sheesh “filled with people like you” that’s the rude I’m referring to, we can be kinder to eachother

Not sure what you mean by “filled with people like you”. I think you might have misinterpreted my comment "This forum is made up of users like you". This is simply to point out to the person that I replied to that Apple is not here to address the concerns that are being posted, as these forums are only made up by users of Apple products, not anyone representing to be from Apple. We are all just users of the products, just like the poster is and are here to help solve issues that others may be having with their device.

Apple Music randomly turns on and the infinity button doesn’t help. I even had to go as far to not use Bluetooth in my car which makes it hard to hear using the phone now. It’s so aggravating when I turn on my car and Apple Music turns on by itself and plays random songs as loud as can be. I’m definitely going to get rid of Apple Music if there isn’t a fix for this. Such bs!!!

I have a Pixel 8 with the Apple Music app. Same problem occurs. Music starts playing automatically when it connects to my car. Really irritating.

That is the way it works for any Music app or any device. When the bluetooth connection is made to the car, music will start playing from the last music source. If it did not do this, you would not be able to listen to Music through your car without having to start the music manually on your device. This would no longer qualify for a hands-free device, which is the way it is marketed by the car manufacturer for Bluetooth Audio.

I read through this last night and tried to click on the infinity button, and alas, it wasn’t there, just like everyone was noting.

Then I went back in and realized that if I was in the Radio mode, the infinity button wasn’t there. HOWEVER, as long as I picked a song from my library, and then followed the instructions to get to the Playing Next section…there it was. Clicked it, so far 24 hours later, so good.

Thankyou Forgottenrim. I just tried your solution but like others no infinity icon - I have the latest IOS.

in my old Freelander Apple Music now starts more frequently than ever and unprotected. Latterly immediately a phone call has ended it cuts in.

clearly and intentional act.

I don’t want to delete the app as I have some great music in my library 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️😫

You’d think apple would finally do something about this! It’s been the same on all iPhones and it’s horrible.
I disabled “hand off” and it’ll still automatically play in my car.
it’s one of the most irritating IPhone features. Instead of adding 50 minor fixes each month, they should focus on the items pepper hate about the phone.

I you have read through the posts you would realize it has nothing to do with the iPhone and every thing to do with the car manufacturer. The way a hand-free Bluetooth device works when connected to a vehicle that does not have a setting to pause Bluetooth audio is to start playing immediately when connected to the car. If it did not do this, then when you chose to listen to Bluetooth audio from your phone, you would need to manually start playing the music on your phone while driving which defeats the purpose of a hands-free connection that they advertise.

Newer vehicles from some car manufacturerers do have a setting to pause Bluetooth audio and allow you to start playing without having to do that from your device. These vehicles also have a setting to prevent autoplay when connected. This also affects Android devices as you can see here:

https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/galaxy-s22-series/autoplay-music-in-car/td-p/7667316

https://support.google.com/androidauto/thread/194798173/i-want-to-turn-off-autoplay?hl=en

https://support.google.com/androidauto/thread/188932983/can-t-turn-off-start-music-automatically?hl=en

In addition, most vehicles will allow you to set a different input source, such as FM before you shut the car off. When you later start the car, the input source will remain on FM and only play the Bluetooth audio when it is chosen from the car radio. All the options depend on the vehicle you have and what settings they include to control your Bluetooth device, whether it is an iPhone or Android phone.

Jim your defenses of Apple are for naught. Apple Music is programmed to open automatically and there is no way to stop it short of deleting it. After the better part of a decade of this super annoying non-addressable issue by the user, I am just fine with my decision to determine that my Apple Music purchases are a loss and delete it. I do not have these issues anymore and use several apps for music when I want them, which is what everyone that originally landed on this page was looking for with Apple Music. The answer is to delete Apple Music

If you do not have purchased music, or a library of songs, or a subscription to Apple Music, then I would suggest to anyone to delete it as the app will serve no purpose for you in the first place. For those that have built their library of songs and benefit from the Apple Music subscription, then the information has been provided for them. The beauty of it is that everyone is free to use any option that they want. There are many options available, each with their own benefits and problems that can be found with any simple internet search.
