music just starts playing automatically on my iPhone

iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 17.0.3 - not subscribed to Apple Music.

Frequently, when the phone is linked to some source like home pod mini or CarPlay or a speaker or something, it just spontaneously decides to start playing music l, usually starting alphabetically by the title of the song.

I have searched online and found suggestions like this one https://freeyourmusic.com/blog/stop-apple-music-from-automatically-playing#

which says:

How to disable Autoplay in Apple Music is explained here and applies to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch:

  1. Select a song in the Music app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. After clicking on the mini player, tap on "up next"and look for the Autoplay icon (the infinity symbol).
  3. To turn off the Autoplay feature when it is turned on, tap the Autoplay icon.
  4. The Autoplay playlist should instantly disappear if the process is successful, and Apple Music will stop playing music on its own.

but when I try to follow these directions I get stuck at step 3 because I cannot find any autoplay infinity symbol icon that can be turned off.

help! This is really annoying. I hate it when my devices decide to do things without my asking it to.

This certainly seems to be an intentional act by Apple to force us to listen to Apple Music rather than their competitors. No auto play icon on my iphone14promax. This is beyond irritating, frustrating and insulting for Apple to do this. I am getting sick of their efforts to control and monopolize.

So for me none of those other settings in my phone worked. I have iPhone 13. That infinity symbol thing in Apple Music was NOT THE ANSWER for all the folk saying they didn’t have it. What the problem was for me was a setting in my stereo system. I clicked the home button in car then went to the main settings in my car. In my car it was called “usb auto launch.” I moved the toggle to off and now when I plug my phone in it doesn’t start blasting music. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for providing your solution. Some users refuse to understand that the car stereo unit needs to have this setting to stop the audio from playing automatically. Not all vehicles have it, but is more common in newer vehicles. While you found the setting for a USB connection, the same is true for Bluetooth as well. Without this setting, the play command is sent to the iPhone from the radio when it is connected, otherwise you would never hear any music when you change the audio source on the car radio to the iPhone.

So why does this happen with headphones. I will be listening to an audiobook, have to pause it for a bit and then click my airpods to resume the audiobook but apple music starts up instead? Very frustrating.

I suggest doing a new post with the details of the headphones and the app used to play the audiobook. Sorry, but I only have AirPods, so unable to troubleshoot. Maybe someone else will be able to provide more insight or a solution. It could very well be a problem with the AirPods only wanting to play Apple Music, I just do not know. Your use case that you describe should be easily reproducible by others.

Apple Music isn’t very good. I had to delete it and move over to Spotify. Every time I got done watching a YouTube or any other media my Apple Music would instantly turn on and start playing. It’s very frustrating specially when you’re driving and you have to pause looking at the road to turn off Apple Music and go back to the original media source and press play. There should be some sort of toggle that makes Apple Music turn off. No other app does this.

Seems to be an issue with the OS. I closed my apple music subscription and deleted the Music App, and it just opens the next app. It seems more like a developer's self-ego trip than a company initiative. I tried to open a ticket, but it seems that is not their priority. It is extremely annoying. I've tried everything to stop my phone doing that. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Review these links and you will see it also happens with Samsung and Google phone. The case is true for any music app as you will also see people complaining that Spotify starts playing automatically when connected to the car.

The car stereo/head unit needs music to play when you select Bluetooth Audio from its controls. If your unit does not have the capabilities to play/pause Bluetooth Audio, it must play when the connection to Bluetooth is made. Some newer vehicles are now including this option to play and pause the music and also has a setting to pause music when the bluetooth connection is made. Floofaroo88 found this setting on their vehicle.

At last a solution that works - no infinity symbol but this does allow you to disable automatic air play when you connect to your car - 8 hours of searching and bingo - thanks

the link above explains the action:

go to settings/airplay & handoff/automatic airplay and set to ask and bingo - I did reboot the phone and the car and it worked perfectly

See my reply below. If you can't have sufficient basic over your copy of Apple Music, there's the option I used: uninstall it. There are plenty of music players without draconian features to which you have no control over. Personally, my favorite is PlexAmp, and until Apple gives me the same features, I refuse to use their music program.

Yes, there is no "clear all" command that I know of. Also forgot to mention you would have to play out the one pending in play mode to get that not to come up also. Basically it has to be in "no music selected" mode, and there is not button to push to achieve that, sadly. This is a continuing nuisance for me as well.

By the way once you clear the "Up Next" items, the "same" list flips right back to your play history list. (Which you would see if you scrolled up from the Up Next list.) There is no need to clear the play history list.

Do you all use the Music Widget to access/view your music? I had the same issue with it auto playing a radio station, even though I was listening to a song on my play list, once accessing my music using the widget. I follow someone’s advice to delete the music app all together and reload it back again. This time around I did not add the widget, just used the normal music app. Since doing so my issues have gone away. To test it I added the widget back in and the issue began occurring again where it would auto play music. Not sure if this is the same for others, but this was my findings and fix.
