When I insert a DVD into the drive, the drive simply ejects it. It worked several months ago, and I had not tried it since then. I have tried several DVDs, all of which used to work. I have disconnected the drive and plugged it back in (directly). It clearly has power, but uses it only to refuse to do anything useful.

Sounds silly but make sure the SuperDrive is right side up, black side down. After that, acquire a CD lens cleaning kit from Amazon or many office supply stores. Just so you know, a working SuperDrive does work with Ventura.
You're welcome. It may have failed. The only way to tell would be to test it on another Mac.
