Finder menu -> Preferences -> Sidebar -> External disks and CDs DVDs need to be checked.
If the sidebar is not showing your iPhone when connected in the Finder window, it is possible your cable is not the right one for your phone.
The iPhone 15 is the first to take USB-C cables for connectivity. If your Mac doesn't support USB-C you need a USB-A to USB-C cable. Lightning cables will not work. Thunderbolt cables will!
The differences:
between USB-A and USB-C (Thunderbolt has a lightning bolt icon on the outer casing before the connector)
Lightning versus USB-C. Prior to the iPhone 15, all iPhones used Lightning.
