Hi guys. I was facing the same issue after getting a new phone and updating to 17.2. Try this - settings > your name > iCloud > apps using iCloud (show all) > messages in iCloud > this should show the status of your sync and should then give you the option to “sync now”. I’m hoping you all see this option! So far so good.

Same here.

But first, Update iOS 17.2 destroyed my iPhone's Recent Calls history. After I restored the phone from an encrypted Mac backup made right before the iOS update, Recent Calls history was restored correctly, but Messages has been stuck syncing going on almost 24 hours.

The phone has been on WiFi, charging and locked overnight. In iCloud Settings on the phone I have manually restarted Sync Now, signed out and back in to both iCloud and Messages, turned Messages off and back on, force restarted the phone. There is no difference other than the status of the number of messages syncing has gone from 88 to 99 to 109.

Messages seem to be sending and receiving normally, but some recent exchanges within recent conversations are missing. The missing exchanges do show up in Messages synced to iCloud on other devices, so the missing exchanges are present in iCloud and being synced on other devices, just not on the device updated to iOS 17.2.

Omg yes! Thats what Ive been telling everyone. Ok let me explain. So I manually delete my texts everday. I am aware it takes up to 4 days for them to be permantly deleted on the servers end. Well since I updated to ios 17.2 my icloud storage keeps increasing not decreasing and I believe its because texts arent being deleted on the servers end. Just my opinion. I also noticed that messages in icloud (its a new feature in ios 17.2) the toggle wont turn on or off. I have mine off but I noticed when I went to turn it on it didnt move. So Im wondering if this is why the messages are being deleted off the server of the icloud storage. I already had to buy more storage today just to be safe. Im about to delete everything from my phone to free up space and I dont even have much on my phone. Its a brand new phone too. Im so glad I came accross this thread as Ive been posting about it all week on here.

Not sure but after speaking to many ppl at apple support I think theres a major issue with the messages app because I think thats whats causing my own issue with the backup storage bug increasing. I noticed in the iphone storage the message app stayed at 70mb for a week then today it recalloberated to 101mb (which I know it goes up and down depending how you use it) so Im thinking thats whats causing the issue in the icloud backup storage because I have deleted texts but I dont think its recallobrated in the cloud perhaps. I hope they fix it but I just keep reporting it.

Having the same issue with my iPhone 15 Pro. Syncing is constantly paused. Not having issues with my MBP or iPad. I've also noticed that messages I've deleted from over the summer (and should be deleted on the servers as I only keep for 30 days) came back onto my iPhone. Tried all the assorted tricks with Apple Support and after completely wiping my phone and setting it up fresh, I've decided to turn off Messages in iCloud for 30 days for my entire message cache and database to be completely deleted (as per a final last ditch effort from Support.) I'll set it up fresh on Jan 24th and see if that does the trick.
