Okay so this to follow up for the original comment posted on this thread…

I have spoken to the senior technical team for 2 days, and following are the results:

Day 1:

Troubleshooting techniques used during screen sharing session:

  • Turn Off/On ‘Messages in Cloud’ - using settings -> Profile -> iCloud
    • This technique has yielded no difference
  • Sign Out/In from iCloud
    • This technique has yielded no difference
  • Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh = Off
      • After turning off the background spp refresh, try manual ‘Sync’ for ‘Messages in iCloud’
  • As per the technical support team, this has worked for most of the users, but didn’t work out for me.

Day 2:

  • Restore iPhone/iPad using Finder/iTunes
      • Take backup of your iPhone using iCloud or Mac/Windows
      • Post restore set it up as new iPhone.
      • Login to iCloud, finish setting up the phone.
      • Go to ‘Settings’ -> ‘User Name’ -> ‘iCloud’ -> ‘Show all’ -> ‘Messages in iCloud’ ->turn it ‘On’
      • Now let wait for the sync to be complete
      • Intermediately it will show you ‘Syncing paused’ based on the sheet amount of messages already backed up earlier.
  • Try clicking on ‘Sync’ it should resume where it earlier left off.

After this restore, and then manually backing up/sync the Messages in iCloud worked perfectly for me. For other devices such as iPad & Mac the issues persists until you restore it.

It’s been 2 days and the issue hasn’t creeped back yet. Will keep this thread updated if I find something new.

Same here.

But first, Update iOS 17.2 destroyed my iPhone's Recent Calls history. After I restored the phone from an encrypted Mac backup made right before the iOS update, Recent Calls history was restored correctly, but Messages has been stuck syncing going on almost 24 hours.

The phone has been on WiFi, charging and locked overnight. In iCloud Settings on the phone I have manually restarted Sync Now, signed out and back in to both iCloud and Messages, turned Messages off and back on, force restarted the phone. There is no difference other than the status of the number of messages syncing has gone from 88 to 99 to 109.

Messages seem to be sending and receiving normally, but some recent exchanges within recent conversations are missing. The missing exchanges do show up in Messages synced to iCloud on other devices, so the missing exchanges are present in iCloud and being synced on other devices, just not on the device updated to iOS 17.2.

Apple support first level is not great. I’ve been waiting for a resolution to an issue for months now with the move to suggested not working on Mac OS mail. They’re ghosting me and not even calling back or responding to my email. I’ve seen on Reddit the message sync issue was happening during the beta testing as well so obviously it wasn’t resolved before the public release. Software and server side issue for sure. Probably won’t be fixed until 17.2.1 rolls out.

It doesn't matter, iOS, MacOS and iCloud syncing is broken across the board. Messages in the could actually never works as intended. In my account there are 2.5GB of messages in the Cloud. MacBook and iPhone ALWAYS have a different count in Messages and size downloaded and Syncing pauses all the time by itself. One device shows 183MB downloaded the other offers to download attachments manually. Plus: Message on the phone keeps removing downloaded attachments again and again. No device ever has 2.5GB downloaded, turning off messages in the cloud results in error all the time.

Let's not start with iCloud syncing. Instead of introducing new features or emojis with the next release, Apple should focus on bug fixes big time. I am about to cancel my subscription. It's wasted money.

Was on a call with Apple support for almost 2 hours. They perfomded various troubleshooting exercises and now escalating it to engineering and will call me back in the next 72 hours. They had me delete a VPN, reset my network and I downloaded some logs to them. Fortunately, it’s not affecting the performance of the phone just annoying occurrence that we don’t want to have albite us in the backside if we ever need to restore something. I will reply back when Apple advises me but my guess is they will come up with another iOS fix shortly.

Omg yes! Thats what Ive been telling everyone. Ok let me explain. So I manually delete my texts everday. I am aware it takes up to 4 days for them to be permantly deleted on the servers end. Well since I updated to ios 17.2 my icloud storage keeps increasing not decreasing and I believe its because texts arent being deleted on the servers end. Just my opinion. I also noticed that messages in icloud (its a new feature in ios 17.2) the toggle wont turn on or off. I have mine off but I noticed when I went to turn it on it didnt move. So Im wondering if this is why the messages are being deleted off the server of the icloud storage. I already had to buy more storage today just to be safe. Im about to delete everything from my phone to free up space and I dont even have much on my phone. Its a brand new phone too. Im so glad I came accross this thread as Ive been posting about it all week on here.

I'm having the same problem. I've had 3 Apple first level support calls where they had me do all the things that they've had others do, all with the same result - syncing paused.

All the recent messages are delivered to my iphone, macbook, and mac mini and they all stay in sync.

First level support should be informed that this is a bug so that we don't waste hours recovering iphones for no reason.

Exactly the same thing…it gets towards the end of the sync then pauses. When I try to force a re-sync it starts and stop almost immediately. Messages seem to be functioning as normal but have that little nag message in the main message list that syncing is paused. I’ve tried installing from scratch, turning off message sync and back on same thing. Only seeing this on my iPhone not iPad yet.
