FCPX not working with prores raw

I'm shooting with a sony a1 raw output to a atamos ninja v+ set to prores raw. when i import the clips to fcpx they appear black unless i hover over them and when i drag a clip into the editing timeline it keeps looping render and when i try to play it, it's just black. when i export the clip to rec709 it gives me an error message and wont export.

This has been happening since December and is an FCP 10.7 bug which has not been fixed. It does not relate to the OS directly. It happens on Sonoma and Ventura (Tom reported this) but is mainly reported for Sonoma primarily I presume because those who tend to update FCP also tend to update the OS.

It is a complex bug. It is only observed on some computers and not others so some Intel Macs and M1 Mac Minis seem to be the main ones affected. It affects some ProRes Raw files and not others even from the same camera. It relates to frame size and not frame rate so, for example, 4.1K ProRes Raw files from the Nikon Z8 and Z9 are affected regardless of frame rate but not 5.3K ProRes Raw files from the same cameras.

It will take an FCP update to fix. I think it is pointless to try to go back to an earlier version of the OS. The only fix for affected computers is to install FCP 6.x. There are workarounds such as using Compressor to transcode to ProRes.

Ok so I just ran a couple of other tests to make sure as I've got access to a MacPro2019 with 32GB graphics and Afterburner card and a 27" iMac 2019 (all updated to latest OS and FCP 10.7). Everything works on the MacPro - not a blip and no problem exporting. On the iMac, the file posted by felixmizioznikov is black in the viewer as has been described and my internal ProRes Raw file from the Z8 is also black in the viewer but the NinjaV ProRes Raw files of various generations and two different cameras play and export normally. The files that play black can't be exported either as described. The files that play normally stay normal when playback is stopped. So strange goings-on indeed. I'll post a few samples tomorrow if you want for testing.

I'm a hobbyist videographer, but I'm sure this is a devastating bug for those of you in the professional field.

It could certainly be devastating. There are workarounds such as going back to an earlier version of FCP or maybe using other software to transcode to ProRes4444. Not everyone is aware of the trick of saving an earlier version of FCP by compressing the app that is discussed here so often but this is really important with Apple not providing access to earlier versions of software when later versions will work on a particular machine setup.

However, there is a golden rule for anyone involved in professional imaging - don't update or upgrade your software when you are working on a job with any sort of deadline. Don't use auto updates or anything. This applies across the board. It's not worth the risk.

So I have an update.....which is..... I bought an imac studio.

This thing is pretty amazing. I can now work with prores raw and it's amazing and I bought a LD hdr screen which has been working out great.

Apple techs still havent been able to solve the prores raw issue on the intel imac pro

If the forum allows sharing youtube videos here are sample clips taken with the sony a1 and atomos ninja in prores raw hq..

I wanted to jump in here in 2024 and let everyone know I'm having a similar issue.

Camera: Canon R5C (latest firmware 1.0.6.1)

Recorder: Ninja V+ (latest firmware 11.05.00)

Computer: (iMac Pro (base version - Intel Xeon / latest MacOS Sonoma 14.4.1)

FCPX (latest 10.7.1 with latest Pro video files)

The issue for me revolves around the 6K version of ProRes RAW (super 35 crop on the R5C). I have NO issues with 8K 29.97. It works perfectly as it should in 8K and surprisingly well on my old iMac Pro.

I CAN view the 6K version just fine in QuickTime, but as soon as I bring it into FCPX .. black nothingness. I suspect it's probably an issue with FCPX. Could be wrong, but thought I'd contribute the info.

All the prores raw clips on dji's website work fine. I think this has something to do between the sony a1 and the ninja v+

Because the Nikon internally recorded raw files don't work for you (same on the iMac I used), it can't be just a problem with the Ninja V+. This must be something to do with how some Intel machines are displaying/decoding some ProRes Raw files. I wonder if it is related to the graphics card (not sure how this would impact exporting). It's beyond my level of knowledge to understand this but it is interesting. Hopefully the Apple software engineers are working on it. The problem is the fact that some files work and some don't.
