We followed Axel Foley's posting:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/254574536?sortBy=best

It fixed the problem on our iPhone 12 after upgrading to 17.2.1

The screen was frozen, so we could not unlock the phone.

The important step is the step in BOLD (see below).

Thank you Axel!!!

1) Try and Force Restart your iPhone EXACTLY as shown below and see whether that resolves the issue:

Press and quickly release Volume UP button

Press and quickly release Volume DOWN button

Press and Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears and then release the Side button (Can take up to 20 seconds. (DO NOT release Side Button when invited to Slide Power OFF).

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME UP

     then

  • Press and quickly release VOLUME DOWN

     then

  • Hold the SIDE button until an Apple logo appears (15-30 seconds), ignoring "slide to power off" if it appears

The operative word here is QUICKLY; and try it a couple of times, the timing is a little tricky. If done correctly this will always work unless the phone has a hardware problem.

iPhone 13, iOS 17.2.1 broke my cellular connectivity. Had the triangle with exclamation in top right corner.

I had exhausted all options:

  • Reset the network settings
  • Set the APN manually
  • Restart iPhone
  • Enable/Disable flight mode
  • Software is up to date (17.2.1)
  • Set the device roaming to home/automatic
  • Changing between 5G Auto/5G On/4G
  • Even requested a new SIM card from my provider (Sky Mobile UK)

Interestingly, I was abroad for work last week (Amsterdam, Porto) and had no issues roaming with other providers.

After reading this thread I have now:

  • Deleted any VPN profiles
  • Deleted my VPN App (NordVPN)
  • Reset the network settings

So far it has been stable for 24 hours with no drops in cellular connectivity.

This workaround seems to get tethering to work via a usb cable on the Mac for me.

The issue seems to be related to IPv4 DHCP address negotiation that arbitrarily fails between the iPhone and the Mac. When it fails, the Mac self-assignes a 169.254.x.x address, which is useless for tethering.

  1. On the Mac, open System Settings and search for Network.
  2. In the Network panel, click on the ellipsis (...) at the bottom right.
  3. Under Locations, choose 'edit locations'.
  4. Click + to add a new location. The name you choose is arbitrary. I just leave it as 'untitled'.
  5. Click 'Done'
  6. Now click on the ellipsis again, choose locations, and select the new location's profile as the active location. Everything should start working again at this point - for awhile.
  7. When it stops working, repeat the process and add a second location ('untitled2') and select that one as the active location profile.
  8. After that, each time it quits working, just toggle back and forth between the two locations and like magic it all starts working again.

Hope this helps. Your mileage may vary.
