How can I turn off voice messaging inside iMessage? I’m not talking about dictation. That setting is off. I mean the ability to accidentally hit the sound icon to the right side of the message prompt. It is way too easy to accidentally hit that while reading someone’s message and then randomly sending them everything my mic pics up.

last time I checked, iOS doesn’t have a specific setting to disable voice messaging directly within iMessage. However, you can prevent accidental audio messages by tapping and holding the microphone icon to the right of the message field, then sliding your finger up to the "Cancel" option to delete the recording. This way, you can avoid sending unintentional voice messages.

I had the same problem.
Try tapping the message field which brings up the keyboard. BELOW the keyboard on the left is the globe and on the right is the mike icon. Press and hold that mike icon and it seems to reset the message field. i.e. the red lines are replaced by the mike icon.
This worked for me.
I don’t know if this was answered but I just figured it out. If you click on the text box as if you are going to send the text, on the bottom corners you should then see the emoji icon on the left and microphone on the right. Click the microphone and it will revert back to Dictation mode.

In General > Settings > Keyboard - turn off Enable Dictation - this disabled the mic icon for me.
This orange audio feature is the most infuriating thing I've come across. There appears to me to be no way to easily remove it permanently. I've just come back to iPhones after a decent spell with Android and I'm beginning to wonder why. I guess the best way is to get as many of your contacts as possible using WhatsApp.
Everyone keeps saying to press and hold the microphone icon. There is no microphone icon, just the red scribbly line to record an audio message. I want to turn that off and go back to dictation. If I press and hold, it just starts recording
This doesn't work as of 1/23/2024 on iOs 17.2.1. When I hold down on the mic icon on the right side of the text input field nothing happens. When I release pressure it begins recording. No menu ever comes up
This is one of the most assinine features I have ever had force-implemented by Apple. In the past few weeks I have sent no less than 5 voice messages to folks inadvertently and never even knew it because it was done by fat fingering. There were plenty more that, thankfully I caught before they inadvertently got sent. The issue is the button is right where my thumb sits naturally and usually the damage is done as I am putting it back in my pocket after sending a message (it rests on the screen long enough to activate the record function).
I will never use this feature. Forcing us to leave it turned on won't ever get me to use it. I am sure someone out there can benefit from voice text - but it isn't me and this one is almost annoying enough for me to go to a different brand.
Even the option to disable per-message thread doesn't work on my phone. I have no choice but to live with this.
the one we are talking about is in the right side of the text input line, which is not the same thing you are talking about. They serve different purposes.
I circled the mic we are talking about in blue. I tried to circle the one you are talking about in a different color - but the markup tool palette covered it and I could t get it to hide so I could circle it. LOL
I don’t have a microphone either I’ve looked on the keyboard under it to the right and left, there just isn’t one. I just have the five red lines at the side of my message box against all my contacts that have sent me text messages. How do you get rid of it WITHOUT a microphone symbol
Hi: Thank you but the raise to listen is already disabled. I even tried adding another keypad as someone else suggested to no avail. Could be another cure. I have the 14 pro os 17.2.1. Maybe the issue is within that. Thanks again.

Yes jvilbar your suggestion to enable dictation worked just as you mentioned. This is perfect because I do want to go out of my way to enable a voice recording and not by chance. I’ll give this a run. Your efforts are much appreciated. Thank you so much!

This! Thank you. I was starting voice messages all the time when reaching up to pulled down notifications and could not figure out why. The combination of raising and my hand made it think I was putting it to my ear or something. You rock!
It takes literally 5 seconds to read the first post and understand that we aren’t talking about voice dictation here. No offense to you but you are the 800th person to get downvoted because they are telling us how to turn off the wrong thing because they aren’t reading and just assuming they know the answer.
