Wow, thanks for digging up a really old thread! It's about a version of Numbers that is radically different from the current version, a completely different application in all but name.
But it is still the case that you cannot link via formula from one Numbers document to another (you can transfer data by script, though that is seldom more efficient than good old copy-paste).
Many think it is a good thing that you cannot refer in a formula to another document. Links between documents are easily broken when something is moved in the file system. And how would they work across platform, say on iOS, where there may be more Numbers users than on the Mac?
Numbers, unlike Excel, makes it easy to put more than one table on the same sheet. And you can have multiple sheets in the same document. So for most projects you've got plenty of ways to organize your work without having to resort to links between documents.

Those are very good points & I appreciate your reply.
Building multiple tables, sheets & formats on a single sheet is one of the things I love about Numbers. Currently I tend to use this blend of formats on a single sheet for one category of information and then build a second sheet for another category for organizational purposes. I use the sheet tab labels as headers to jump directly from one category to another. I’m not sure how I would accomplish this on my iPad if all of it were housed on the same sheet without accidentally dragging the tables around on my screen although I will experiment to see if I can get it to work out.

I prefer to search topics before asking to see if the question has already been answered. In this case the question was asked but no solution had been referenced.
I think working with multiple tables on multiple sheets should be quite similar on the iPad, once you get used to it. I agree it can be pretty easy to end up tapping and dragging something without meaning to. Usually can be corrected without too much trouble.
Wasn't criticizing your research of previous threads! It would be nice if more posters did that and articulated their question as clearly as you did. The thread that search happened to give you on this issue turned out to be really old; there have been many since. The search functionality for these forums "could be better." 😀
