Why is my iPod Classic not syncing with iTunes?

my "classic" 160gb is acting up and won't synch properly...

a bit old school yes, however, that is what I do

I have 2 iPod classics, 1 out in the shop and the newer unit, for use w/ the home system...

when I add new content to iTunes; album purchase, CD I download,...still do that too...

I bring both units to the Mac and synch em up...

2 weeks ago..new album, from I tunes store..did the synch, old unit fine, but the newer unit..

missed portions of a song...now, I just added a new CD, old Pod, again fine...

the new 160gb unit...not getting it done,,,checked all the connections..re-started...all of it,

the iPod is acting up, in a way I can not accurately explain more than I have...

I did notice the "green bolt" which shows on the "synch page" does not show, though the computer and iPod both tell me "connected"

before I Completely "re-store" the unit...

hoping someone can give me a less invasive step(s) to try ?!?

thanx

o k...but, as I look at what to do...my computer "I tunes" does not give me any options for items discussed...specifically "preferences" there's nothing for me to click on to go in that direction...

since the old laptop / older I tunes too... has behaved "better" and allows other choices

is it worth it, or makes sense...to go there...do the stuff suggested via windows ...get it all sorted

possibly

then go back to my Mac to synch and try and move forward ?

if not obvious , I'm really trying to avoid the trip to the shop...the $$$ not the issue it's the time factor

driving And them telling me I'd leave it, then drive back ,,,da dee da ..

thanx !!

I got a new album...and realize how "old school" that is, but, as stated before, I like having my music readily available easily portable ...etc

anyway

the new music, loaded into my iTunes library ...all good ...synched my "older" classic , 120gb, w/o any issue the newer Model A1238 - 160gb, which I had, back in Jan "super-fixed" and it seemed to work fine at that time

went to synch that too...

as it entered the screen , which allowed me to click on "synch" in the upper R corner, click and

poof... it stopped, could not do anything and eventually had to force eject And now when I look at the menu on the iPod = all the music is gone ! shows Nothing ....ugggh ...

so, did go back to step 1, figuring I would have to do all these steps all over again ; erased / restored ...

some of it needed to be performed via my old laptop (windows) as iTunes is Not recognizing the iPod ?!?

the computer does...gives me the ability to view info (though I don't know what it means) but trying to synch or get iTunes to even see it...not happening.... the shop that had done some "tuning up" of the older unit a few years ago, is basically telling me it isn't worth their effort as the technology is so old ...

would gladly accept any recommendations to try and get this working again

just keeps getting better ...no sooner had I sent that last post...I connected the iPod figure I'd give it a go, again, to superfine...opened I tunes ...there's the iPod !

so...able to open and begin synching ...like nothing happened ....

come back to see that the drive shows it has been filled with about 90 gb , tells me to eject before disconnecting like usual...do all that ...disconnected look at the menu

No Music...No NOTHING ??? yikes...

is it iTunes ? one shop I contacted, where a previous repair had been done, indicated " we don't really work on them anymore as so much is outdated and apple doesn't really want you to use iTunes"

words to that effect ... so wondering if I am barking up the wrong tree and more of the issue(s) lie in the iTunes ?

tried connecting a Nano, which also shows up on the computer screen , but , not in the iTunes sidebar

Mar 14, 2024 8:43 AM in response to turingtest2

Not sure if I explain this as accurately as I need to.

Again, minimally tech efficient in general.

None of my devices, now, are being recognized by "Music" "iTunes" ...

I can see the icon(s) on the Mac's screen, but Not in the iTunes sidebar, where it had always been present before. Thus, moving forward with steps outlined has proven to be difficult if not impossible...for Me anyway.

Oddly enough, my "older" classic, synched w/o issue when loading the new music I referenced earlier, then when I plugged in the 160gb and Nothing.

Tried 2 Nanos as well and same...see them on screen , iTunes does not show. Nor did it show in "finder" which a different post indicated was the method to now download ?!? since Sonoma will not use iTunes as it previously had or some such issue, which I admit, gets away from my understanding of how it all works...

Though the newer classic ..Model A1238 160gb, may in fact have problems, the fact that all the devices are now impossible to "synch" as I have done previously

( I exchange music on the nanos for the gym, bike ride stuff)

indicates, to me a possibly larger problem for me to navigate?

would a different device, devices...that had been "iTunes compatible" give me different results ?

Somewhere I read "iTunes Match" offers some different ways to manage the music library. Though I never felt the need to purchase any of these additional services, as I already had My Music where I wanted it, I do accept that I made need to adjust...IF it gives me the access I seek....

also ...forgot to mention...as some of the info coming my way, and steps to do, do not appear to fall into my scenario as some of the links or spots I'm supposed to check...are not available ...replaced by newer versions or... ?!?

the Mac allows me to see, in disk utility , my classic...I click on "1st aid" it runs and tells me o k finished

I then click on "restore" and it tells me "failed" and gives info which I can not define ...so there is that too

Try this section of the user tip:

Reformat Drive

If all else fails try Erase your iPod - The Super Fix for most iPod Problems. Basically a low level format of the iPod’s hard drive to get around whatever problems are stopping iTunes (or Finder) from restoring it properly.

Another approach for a Windows formatted iPod is to get a Mac owning friend to restore the device and then return it to you for restoring again on Windows, or have a Mac formatted iPod restored by a Windows user and then restore it again on a Mac.

It is worth noting that iPod classics are initially formatted for Windows (i.e. FAT rather than HPFS) and that Finder should be able to write data without needing to restore/reformat a Windows drive. In short get the iPod restored on a Windows box and then try simply using it on your Mac.

hello again .... Thanx!

thought my questions were driving everyone away....some changes since last post and will mention now

initially, I had tried the "super-fix" Again, both w/my Mac and also on my windows laptop ...

the Mac does Not provide language, in the various windows that pop up, similar to what is laid out in the article/tutorial, and for me, not knowing all the "technical stuff" that does prove a challenge ...

anyway, nothing worked as far as getting to a point where I could synch

I will mention however...out of the blue...1 of the Nanos I had also been trying to synch and was having a similar problem with, Did in fact pop-up, just the way it always had and I did synch it ?!? go figure ?

so, took the classic to a local Best Buy and got lucky that a young technician was fascinated at the prospect of working on it, did get it to restore and when I asked can I synch it, he said

" I would not re-connect to iTunes on the Mac" So, now wonder, what next

I have now, been asking on various forums, about getting a laptop..Windows... where I would install a version of iTunes that would allow me to manage my music, in much the same manner as I did

before getting the Mac, 2 years ago...

I keep the library backed up on an external HD...and figure I could get it onto the laptop and go from there...however, for the last few years my "new music" is almost entirely, purchased from iTunes Store and began wondering if that will cause a problem in proceeding with the steps I'm outlining now ?

the other thought, what other device might I substitute for the classic...a Sony Walkman or ? ?

that I have previously seen in articles as " iTunes compatible" ....

I just really want my very old collection of tunes, where I can get it / use it, in as simple a format as possible...

all the "extras" of Apple Music, etc are unnecessary for me ....

again ...thanx so much for the help !

Mar 21, 2024 6:49 AM in response to turingtest2

I am leaning towards the dedicated laptop...Windows... for just my music library/iTunes , see if the Classic(s) synch and run as they had previously, so as to simplify my issues. The upgrades, changes and such that frequently occur for all this stuff is obviously, not my cup of tea and I do not require it nor grasp it, like many likely do. However, will ask if this plan makes sense to the more knowledgable and if there are "other" potential issues I may not be anticipating?

Also, there seem to be 2 or 3 devices in the $350-700 range, that could replace the iPod if necessary.

I see "new" Classics offered on eBay at the same amount, but, would that make sense and be a repeat of problems further down the line?

thanx

I don't have any options on current alternate devices. Years ago I had a 40Gb iRiver player that was much cheaper than the 30Gb iPod classics of the day, and later I loved my 160Gb classic, but I now have an iPhone with Apple Music and access to more music than I could ever curate on a physical drive. Some of it I download to make sure it is always available, but with unlimited data I can always stream anything I fancy playing. And I only have to carry one device. I don't miss missing calls on my phone while my headphones were plugged into the classic, and my AirPods are much more reliable than my old wired headphones which I would replace several times a year.

thanx ...understood

likely somewhat difficult to have one, like me, that just does not want the; streaming, newer tech in general, all of it and w/ so much "personal" home recordings and the like ... I won't be going that way...in this life anyway :)

but, my real question then ...dedicating a windows laptop, to music...an iTunes version that let's old me,

navigate like I used to ...seem viable ?

my classic, that I have not touched since the tech told me it's restored...

if I get a little more time out of it, great...

the other options (devices) according to the info, could hold my library, if I need to go that route

THANX ...again

Mar 22, 2024 7:30 AM in response to turingtest2

the apple music App, I don't need, right ?

I just want my own library, How I want it...

the app is for streams and other stuff, doesn't effect the way I will use my library, correct ?

I could still get new music from the iTunes Store , if I wanted to ?

what I do keep forgetting to ask, and since it sounds like having iTunes

on a windows based laptop is the way to go... in my scenario

are there any issues, you foresee, moving that music ...

from the external HD to the new iTunes set up?

my 2nd iPod, the 120gb also Model A1238

which also holds the library, is available...

however, I remember what a nightmare it was, back in 2008,

to get all the, originally Mac formatted iPod , to a windows format ....ugggh...

I may be toooo old to try and reverse that now ;)

thanks so much

forgot to ask...my memory, not the 160gb..Mine !

I realize this is "iTunes for Windows" and such, but ?!?

since you mentioned other players you have used previously and, since

I am thinking my Classics are closer to their end...have been looking at options for a new DAP

but, until a few minutes ago

had Not considered other options to iTunes ... and perhaps that is a better route to follow ? wonder if you have a view on that..w/o alarms going off since it is not Apple based

thanx

there is a more manageable, windows based , music player that will do everything

Why is my iPod Classic not syncing with iTunes?
