Magic Keyboard not working on iPad pro after connecting to an external monitor

I have an 11 inch iPad Pro M2. Using it as “pro”, I connect it to an external monitor - and that works great. I also connect it via bluetooth to an external mouse. However, I’ve noticed that after typing on anything where the focus is on the external monitor and later I disconnect the monitor, that the keyboard no longer works. The track pad will still work and curiously, the up and down arrows seem to work too, but I cannot type anything. The iPad still thinks that the keyboard is there, though, as the software keyboard would not come up. I believe it has to do with the focus, where the iPad does not recognize that the focus should only be on the iPad screen windows. The only way to resolve this is to restart the iPad. Anyone else with this issue?

I have the same issue. And as many people are having the issue, this must be a bug. Can Apple acknowledge and add this into a bug list to work on?

When I connect to an external monitor, my Magic Keyboard will only work on the external monitor but not on the iPad when, however the trackpad works.

So, I was able to solve this irritating issue with a forced restart of my iPad Pro M1. This is how 👇🏾

Press the Volume Up button once. Release it then press the volume down button once, release it and immediately press and hold the home button down until you see the Apple logo.

Hopefully this works for you too. :)

I am also having this same issue, have had my 12.5 inch iPad Pro for years and Magic Keyboard for just over a year, so warranties are out of date. If this is a software issue, can apple fix without me replacing both of these devices?

Like others stated, trackpad and some keys still function after disconnecting from external monitor, but unable to type anything using the keyboard even though it is physically connected. Tried dragging the windows from the external monitor back to the iPad and closing down stage manager….nothing works to reset this except forced restart of the iPad.

Very frustrating and would not have purchased both the iPad or the keyboard if I had known it didn’t have this functioning capability. It makes it nearly impossible to use the external monitor to study and take notes, and I can only imagine how much this affects people who use this for their job (as others have previously stated).

Hopefully since so many people are dealing with this software bug, apple will take notice and fix it in the next update. FINGERS CROSSED bc this is not a functional device with this bug

For me it’s not even the Magic Keyboard but even an external keyboard when attaching to a hub or external monitor all using the UsB cable.

interestingly I don’t have any issues with an external mouse, only the keyboard even though it’s on the same wireless receiver.

my keyboard would work but the layout is completely messed and only a few keys work but are incorrectly mapped.

I realized that it has something to do with opening something with a textbox on both the iPad and the external monitor at the same time. For example, if I have Safari opened on the external monitor and click on an textbox (like the searchbar) and i have Settings open on my iPad it works fine. But as soon as I click on the settings search textbox in Settings, my keyboard ceases to work until I close or minimize either Safari or settings.

This is 100% a bug on Apple and not something we’re doing as users.
